Interesting Read on SDSU football attendance...

"The attendance figure that SDSU announces at games is based on the number of tickets distributed for a game but not necessarily used by patrons. It includes no-shows, free tickets and tickets exchanged for trade.

In 2011, SDSU’s announced attendance (279,056 for seven games) was 40 percent higher than its turnstile attendance (199,047) — about the same rate as recent years.

Because a high percentage of empty seats is counted in its announced attendance, the difference between the two sometimes becomes a punch line. For example, SDSU announced a crowd of 28,362 for its Nov. 5 home game against New Mexico, a number 67 percent higher than the number of people actually in the crowd, according to the turnstiles (16,979)"

A lot of schools do this.....I remember claims that 15K showed up to last years home game vs New Mexico. Yeah, sure. Just drop the 1.

The Idaho Vandals take the cake in this fraud though......They claim to sell out every game (15K), but never come even close. Often less than 5K arrive.

I think they count the number of aircraft they move out of there before each game.

J-Rod, if you think Wyoming pad the reported attendance figures, you'd be wrong. It was announced that just under 15k attended the New Mexico game. Go to http://www.wyomingathletics.com/sports/m-footbl/recaps/111911aaa.html and watch the video highlights. Most the bottom section on both sides are filled and the middle of the top sections. Easily the announced attendance.

Nice try though.

SDSU people always say they have the best MW attendance, but in reality. they might have one of the lowest. This probably will not change w/ the Big East.

1. San Diego State - 39,865
2. Air Force - 35,303
3. Boise State - 34,018
4. TCU - 33,686
5. Wyoming - 22,162
6. Colorado State - 21,867
7. UNLV - 21,199
8. New Mexico - 20,027

There are so many fallacies in the way these stats are taken. Sure, SDSU may pad the crap out of their statistics, but its not like anyone in the MWC has room to talk. I'm sure Colorado State, UNLV, and New Mexico would have loved to have the extra 10K fan boost Wyoming got from Nebraska this year. I'm not buying SDSU's numbers either, just pointing out that everyone gets their extra edge somehow. Boise State is the only school on that list that genuinely sells out its games. The rest of them are getting an extra boost somehow. 21K my ass Rammies.

Surprised by TCU's numbers. That's with a new stadium too.

Every school does this, Attendance is calculated by tickets sold and season tickets sold not bodies through the turn style. Just like last season at least 2,000 people were not present at every game solely based on Nebraska buying season ticket slots just to get to the game.

Wyoming sold a record 10,417 season tickets in 2011. That's up from about 8,000 last year.

Sure some of those people we be able to resale those tickets but not everyone will. so you can figure at least 2,000 Nebraska fans spent the $300 for season tickets just for that game. Just sounds like SDSU bolsters their numbers even a little higher then most schools.

Wyoming scan's each ticket and then calculates the attendance of each game by the number of tickets that were scanned. In theory, a scanned ticket = person.

However, the data integrity behind the process can always be questioned. Did every scan work correctly? Did each ticket get counted? Tickets aren't scanned on the way out, so nobody knows when the ticket holder left, or if there were any discrepencies in the counting mechanisms.

You can argue for hours - do you have to stay the whole game to count? Tickets sold versus people in attendance. Its all just a number and almost always padded appropriately to make some sort of justufication that doesn't really matter in the long term anyways.

At the end of the day its just a number. Who cares. As long as it is loud and I can find a place to sit, watch a respectable football game, and have a good time, I couldn't really care less.

And to tell you the truth, its easier to watch football on TV. Replays, bad calls, all that stuff are so much easier from the couch. I'm a season ticket holder and go to all the home games, but I don't really blame anyone who uses the TV technology to get the most enjoyment out of it. You don't get that at the stadium. But you don't get the atmosphere while watching the game on TV either.
