Initial reactions re: Cain @ practice today

We may lose the next four games, but reality is, change was needed. Good stuff from Vorel-

Coach Cain is definitely more hands-on with players than Tormey was.
Cain focused on D-Line, but he also spent time with LBs, DBs. Tormey, on the other hand would mostly stick with secondary.
Cain is not afraid to hold people accountable. Never has been. If he doesn't like the way you run through a drill, you'll do it again.

And my favorite...

There was a lot of energy at practice today. Cain said his biggest worry was how players would accept change. They seem to be embracing it.

That is my understanding....Renaldo Hill will coach both db's and safties. The good thing is our safety play was been terrible the past few games.

Fact is, with our offense, the defense only needs to be marginally better - one two two stops per game - and we win.

This is exactly what i said on another thread. We have enough talent to get some stops. We just need to have the guys in a position to succeed.

Thats my biggest gripe. I know we do not have an the talent of the big schools but we have enough athleticism on the defensive side to make plays/stops but just look like were going through the motions. They are rarely in correct positions to make a play. That is coaching. A coach puts schemes and plays on the field that get his players in a place to make a play. What the player does once he's there is up to him. So many times this year we've seen average teams (with less talent/athleticism/skill/etc.) look like an NFL team because our players are SO out of position. CSU is not a 52 point offense and as I have said before, that game was way more about our terrible defensive schemes/execution than it was about them being that talented. Hopefully Cain lights a fire under the players asses and calls more blitzes and quits letting the DBs give 10-15 yard cushions to the WRs coming off the line. No wonder we cant stop a high school team. All the WR have to do is run ten yards to the marker and catch the ball wide open before the DB even gets there. Why can I see that (with no football experience beyond Jr. High) but our defensive guru cannot? It boggles the mind.

I'll wait and see. I heard practice intensity picked up last year too when Kalagis took over while CDC was suspended. We'll certainly find out what they're made of against Fresno. The toughest offense the Pokes have faced all year, with no close 2nd.

Offense was never an issue. And I'd say Nebraska has a decent offense. Fresno is one dimensional, but pretty good at that one dimension. Hopefully Cain will do what Tormey didn't.....try to pressure the QB.

Nebraska is decent on offense.....but nowhere near Fresno is at. I think the weather can potentially help Wyoming, even to a great extent....but make no mistake about it...the Bulldog offense moves at a speed even the Cowboy offense can't show the defense in practice. Carr's got the quickest release of any QB in college football, and has the conferences Top 3 WRs to help him. I'm hoping it snows and is windy as hell.....anything to equalize that ridiculous offense. Intensity will not be as important against Fresno as positioning will be. Line up incorrectly against Fresno = TD Bulldogs.

That said, Fresno is going to fall off the face of the earth next year after this group graduates/leaves.

You mean once they get rolled in a BCS game.

Yep. Their starters are good, but their backups let Hawaii put nearly 40 points up on them.

Their 1s are good, their 2s and 3s are horrible.

In all honesty, I do root for our conference. I just dont think Fresno is a "BCS Buster" like Boise State has been in the past.

They come off as very 2007 Hawaii-ish. Super easy schedule....all important games at home. Fortunate Boise is in a down year.....looks exactly like 2007 Hawaii to be honest. And we all know how that ended.....

Doesn't really matter what you think though. If they win out, and are 13-0 MWC champs, they will be in a BCS Bowl.

Assuming....UCF isn't ranked ahead of them.

Or the Big12 champ (Texas maybe?)
Even if they were ahead of AQ-conference champ.....still have to be ahead of UCF....who has the better resume.

Why do they have to be ahead of UCF? AAC has an automatic bid this year. However if they are ranked above the AAC champion or any AQ champ they only have to be top 16 not 12.
