ESPN Laying off workers

Looks like the cable cutting has started to hurt ESPN a bit. Should be interesting how this plays out.

They have nobody to blame but themselves. As soon as they parted ways with him I knew they would see problems #FreeBillSimmons

ESPN get $6.00 for each individual subscription that each cable company that has them in their lineup. They have lost a lot of those subscriptions and that represents about $250 million bucks. Hence the layoffs. That is my understanding at least.

Hopefully this signals a shift away from ESPN as the dominant sports media
Fox Sports 1 and 2 are quickly becoming my new favorite channels. Baseball playoffs, college football, and UEFA champions league soccer, and their sports center type shows are pretty good as well. Unfortunately I cut the cord and am with Sling which doesn't carry it, so I need to use my parents direcTV account for Fox Sports Go access lol

I agree, and just regular fox sports has been my favorite for college football for a while now. I also have HBO GO so even though it will likely be more NBA related I'm really looking forward to Simmons new show, he is definitely my favorite sports media guy

I think he's great too. He and Jalen Rose worked great together for NBA broadcasts, and I loved reading his pieces on grantland. I still don't understand how ESPN justified severing ties with him while still keeping Stephen a Smith, which is part of the reason why I don't feel so bad about this news haha

Plus, the one thing ESPN really has going for them, the 30 for 30 series, came from Simmons haha. If you're a podcast guy, Jalen's Grantland podcast is one of the more entertaining things I've found

ESPN went after sensationalizing characters. People that would make big splashes with meaningless crap. They got such a great reaction, but it was such a temporary one at the same time.
People talked about Stephen A Smith and Skip Bayless and talked about how these two were so dumb or how they couldn't stand them or whatever. But then, the people that really don't like them just started tuning out.
ESPN just fires anyone who actually has half a brain and wises up around them.

ESPN sucks. Until Fox Sports can rise up and/or ESPN falls back a little more, they are still a big time leader.

I love that Cowherd is no longer on ESPN, because I like his new show even more than before.
Same with Dan Patrick, although he has been gone from ESPN for a LONG time now.

I wish Cowherd would host a College Gameday Live type show on Saturday mornings.

I am so sick of Lee Corso and the way Herbstreit has turned into some fratty jock bro.

But, I love college football and tune it.

ESPN sucks and people realize it, and they are getting fucked because of it.

Not totally true. SVPs version of SportsCenter is 1000x better than the actual SportsCenter. He's funny, he's witty, he has on a lot of really good guests.. his product is superior, much like his radio show with Russillo was.

SVP is damn good, one of the only "elite" sports media people ESPN has left. I'd put him in the same class with Cowherd, Patrick, and Simmons as the best in the biz right now. Ironically, all 4 for a different network now after all getting their start at ESPN

See, I can't stand Cowherd. I find him to be kind of a blowhard.

I find this a bit disturbing:
It carries must-see TV, like "Monday Night Football," but comes with a high price tag, about $6 a month per subscriber, which is folded into customers' cable bills.

If I understand this correctly, the cable company, on average, is paying $6 per subscriber to carry this in their basic package and passing it on to the consumer.

Most channels are around $0.25 - $1.00 per month. $6 bucks is pretty hefty - considering how often actual live sports are actually played.

Live sports programming is about the only thing left that people simply won't save and watch when at their convenience.

I really like Colin Cowherd. That and SVP and Russillo were my favorites. Russillo and Kanell is pretty good as well.
