Folks...everyone has good points with the exception of calling out someone's dedication to the team simply because they don't wear rose colored glasses and accept the same lines that have been used for the last 7+ years as to why the team is playing like they are. I'm not going to challenge anyone's loyalty to the Cowboys just because they have a different view than mine--with that I suggest we just agree to disagree and pull for our team albeit in different ways!!!!
The problem I have with the argument that we need to be patient and such is that we heard it with Vic, we heard it with Cowboy Joe and now we are hearing it with Dave. I don't know about any of you, but I am seeing a trend--and not a very good trend. The landscape of college football has changed so drastically since the last time Wyoming was considered a real player in the conference or nationally. Money drives everything now. Yes, Wyoming is investing in the future and I think this is great...but I just spent part of the weekend marching inside Rice Eccles stadium in SLC (I'm in the Air National Guard) and that stadium is very impressive and I can tell you that the War has a long ways to go. Add the "small town" atmosphere to Laramie and it is easy to understand why Wyoming will have a very hard time recruiting the kind of talent that is needed to compete. Yes, Wyoming has always had to outcoach and outplay other schools because we have always had less "talent". Perhaps we will win again like we use to. But I will always believe that Wyoming is a better "fit" in the WAC. That has nothing to do with my love for Wyoming football or the state. There is a reason that sports are separated by divisions (I.E. states have 4A/3A etc...) I want to see Wyoming win. I can't fathom responses from folks saying they would rather see Wyoming lose to a big time program than win against a mid-level one. Losing is for losers and I know that Wyoming is not a loser in its heart. Either way, we all have to just see what happens next week because nothing we say on this forum really matters in the grand scheme of things...
A couple of points in regards to the bolded portion:
1. I think most of the vitriol on this thread comes from the notion of dropping a level (FCS) rather than switching to a slightly weaker league, but still D1-A.
2. Having said that, here's a dirty little secret for those that are enjoying our struggles: The WAC doesn't want us, or need us. Hurts to admit, but it is the truth. Maybe if the MWC poaches Boise and Fresno they would be desperate for members, but right now they would have no interest.
3. We would get more wins in the WAC, but we wouldn't be competing for conference titles. BSU is every bit as good year in and year out as the top teams in the MWC. We did play them more competitively than we have top MWC programs in recent years, but I think that is kind of fluky.
4. While it wouldn't be as dramatic as dropping to the FCS, we would see a decided drop in revenue by moving to the WAC. The media contract is much smaller, the conference tournament generates less revenue, and they generate slightly smaller NCAA tournament credits. On top of that, we will lose the attendance bump that we have as a result of playing BYU, CSU and to a lesser extent AFA. The problem is that while revenues would drop less steeply than they would in the FCS, we wouldn't be able to lower expenses like we would in the FCS. By moving to the WAC, we would lower revenues but keep expenses the same (arguably higher travel costs actually). As you allude to, it is all about money, and we can't afford to move to the WAC, even if they wanted us.
This whole thread makes me extremely angry. People act like we haven't been competitive in generations. This isn't UTEP football, we have had our struggles, but we are competitive in football, we have two conference titles and a NCAA tournament win in Men's BB this decade (only UNLV and Utah can say the same), and we have a very competitive Women's BB team.
We were a very solid football team through the 80's and 90's. Our run of mediocrity (9 years and counting) is much shorter than that experienced by UNM before Franchione, CSU before Lubick, or Utah before McBride. Should they have all just given up? Heck, how about UNLV and SDSU right now? SDSU is the only MWC team not to make a bowl and they are the only MWC team that has not performed well in OOC play with quality wins over AQ schools? Should they drop football and join the Big West? UNLV hasn't been good in Football (with the exception of that LV bowl season a few years back) in so long that they barely have any fans that remember it.
Ask yourself this, what is the primary purpose of intercollegiate athletics? If it is simply to provide athletic opportunities for students, than we are best served as a D3 school. If it is to promote and market the University on a large stage, then we are best served at the highest possible level. Ask yourself this, do you think Iowa State would trade affiliations with Northern Iowa? UNI is very successful at their level, yet I guarantee you that Iowa State would never consider leaving the Big 12. What are the chances that Iowa State is going to surpass Texas in the near future?
The other thing that must be said is in regards to patience. You say we have been patient long enough. I agree on an emotional level, but it isn't logical. Dave Christensen cannot be held responsible for the results of Koenning and Glenn. You can't bail on him after 3 games and say he will never win.
The NCAA tournament wins (Gonzaga in 2002, Fennis and the Boys in the late 80's) and the notable OOC wins in recent years (UCLA in LV Bowl, Tennessee) have brought more attention to the University of Wyoming than going 8-4 in the Big Sky ever would. We shouldn't give that up.
