Dalton, James, Marshall, Moemeka, Conway suspended

I didn't mean to make it political, just pointing out that it is illegal no matter what state you are in. Some states just don't enforce the federal laws and the feds also ignore it in those states.

Regarding the kids smoking and getting caught, it is a huge black eye for the program and the University. They need to take the good with the bad. Yes, lots of college kids do it, but those kids aren't on the basketball team. Those kids aren't the front porch of the university. We talk about how good athletics can be for a university's image, well it cuts both ways.

To quote a country song: "If you can't be good, then be good at it". In other words, no matter what you do, stay out of the damn headlines.

We know it is happening across the country. We know it is happening at UW. Happening at BYU. Happening at Laramie High. I get it. But, given the fact that they are literally a few people that represent an entire state basketball team, who we all pay money to support, they need to think of others.

And before I get vilified for attacking their character, let me be the first to say, I WANT NOTHING MORE THAN THESE KIDS TO GET STAY ON THE TEAM. I think they made a mistake. And to be fair, in the big picture, not a huge mistake, but an illegal mistake nonetheless.

I believe they are good kids or Shyatt wouldn't have gotten them. This goes beyond basketball. Learn from this mistake, because in the real world you could jeopardize a career, your family, etc.

And I am not a huge fan of the public apology thing, but it would sure be good if they came out with remorse and said sorry for screwing Josh Adams at least. Arguably one of the best players to wear brown and gold, and they took a dump on him his final week of basketball. They took a dump on hundreds of fans who booked trips to Vegas in hopes of seeing a little magical run again. Man up guys. Own this mistake and let's move on...and don't do it again.

Count me among those that believe from a criminal perspective, Wyoming's policies toward weed make little sense. We waste WAY too much state/taxpayer money on non-violent offenders that end up becoming more of a burden on society after making their way through the court system. But that is mostly irrelevant to this topic.

The worst part of the whole 'weed bust' is the negative publicity this brings to the basketball/athletics program. Front page of Cheyenne newspaper today. After the recent legislative session, a good portion of the general public (largely incorrectly) believes that the University athletics program is being subsidized at the direct expense to K-12 education. With this story coming out now, you have to believe that there will be an even greater push to end the funding match next legislative session when money will likely be even tighter.

I'm not so sure they are getting high. Pretty much get tossed out of the state and the church for that right? I mean you can't even have sex with your lady outside of wedlock. Could you imagine what would happen if you got high then had sex with your partner...oh heaven forbid! I promise you it wouldn't be fun so don't do it

Yes this all still SUX! Not moving from that. I've had a lot of fun posting on this thread  I'm probably our most pro pot guy on the board and I don't like the guys bong ripping that heavy before the tourney. As stated all over you have 1 week, MAYBE 2 if you run the tourney before you can just blaze away. God now our team is just gonna be a bunch of paranoid stoners....and who says bong ripping ain't a team building exercise????? I'm happy that they at least like to hang out with each other, there's another positive here I guess. Scared to see what happens now  I mean that Branding Iron thing is shitty. You walk into class and everyone knows you get high. Hope they turn this whole thing around and we get to give the gang a nickname when they kickass...The Dope Boys??? The High 5???

I don't think I would vilify the Branding Iron over this...they are doing their jobs. 5 kids booted for the year on the men's basketball team should garner a bit more attention than a blurb on the last page of the sport's section. This is a big deal and it should be treated as such. Can you imagine if this would have happened after the 2nd game of the OOC? Good for the BI for having the balls to go out and figure out what really happened, and not settle for the old corporate stance of "We've said all we are going to say on the matter."

Certain things in life have consequences, especially illegal ones. Personally, I've always thought the war on drugs, especially marijuana, was an absolute joke and a complete and total waste of money. However, my opinion doesn't matter when it is deemed an illegal substance. I don't make laws, but I do agree to obey them. These kids need a big fat dose of humility and having their mugs plastered across the front page of local newspapers should do exactly that. Use this as a learning experience, and then think about it the next time some dude passes you the bong. For fuck's sake, basketball season lasts 5 months. How difficult is it to refrain from smoking dope for 5 months? What are they going to do in the real world of random drug testing? The companies I've worked for had a zero tolerance for drugs period. If you failed a random drug screen, you lost your job. Try going home and telling your family you are now unemployed because having a few hits with the boys was more important than your job and your family.

I know the old adage, "kids do stupid things," and you are right - we all have done some pretty stupid shit in our lives, most of it when we were younger. That's why I believe in second chances, but if I were Shyatt I would be damned clear that there will be no third chance....you do this again and your time at Wyoming and a free education is over. :twocents:

Exactly why someone "left" the team earlier this year

One more time, and they will be kicking road apples on the way out of town.

Well, it finally made its way to the Tribune.

Not encouraging breaking the law, but you know there is a right to remain silent. I'd anticipate that prosecuting this misdemeanor based upon the alleged facts would be very difficult without the alleged admissions.

It doesn't matter if you all believe marijuana should be legal or not. The fact remains that it is (regardless of your opinion) illegal and they should not be doing it. Period. It doesn't matter if it affects their game or not. Illegal is illegal.

I had high hopes for these kids, but am severely disappointed in them. It's a good thing Shyatt is a nicer guy than me, cause they would never wear my uniform again. It sucks, but they knew the consequences.

Hahaha...nope. Couldn't be that clever if I tried.

I like the comments over there too. Pretty much the same range as us on this board. There are a few people that want to see the kids shit-canned as to be expected. More people just want Wyoming to change the drug laws ahahah. I'm seeing a trend
That comment on the same as having a beer is how I see it. I'm hoping for one day in the future when we see grandpa toking down on his front porch we view it the same as him drinking a cold one or a glass of wine. Honestly its been demonized so much by some powerful organizations. It's not for everyone I know that for sure but I just want more freedom in the land of the free!

No different than underage drinking in my opinion. Would this happen if it was drinking ( are any of the players 21?)? There are Wyoming high school teams tha would let underage drinking scate by. We are minutes away from Colorado and we are a party school. We are not a Utah school, free these players next year!

From a basketball perspective it is a lot different. When you are inhaling smoke into your lungs you aren't going to be in near as good of shape as you should be. I agree in other ways weed isn't as bad for you as drinking but when you have to smoke it then you aren't going to be at the top of your game for basketball.

So as far as I am concerned I don't want anyone on the team smoking weed. So disagree about freeing these players. If it happens again kick them off the team.

Marijuana is safer than alcohol, it is almost certainly less damaging to the body than alcohol. This is an issue because weed is illegal, nothing more. There are athletes right now at UW that use tobacco and alcohol, and that is more damaging to performance than marijuana. Poor timing to be partying, punish them for that ( same punishment for boozing) nothing more.
