Completely OT: Had a 5.8 earthquake hit here 5 hours ago

It's nice to see the government in Oklahoma is finally listening to the scientists that have been warning them of the dangers of injecting all that wastewater into the ground recently. Looks like the OCC is shutting down all disposal wells within a wide radius around today's quakes. Sure, it's probably a couple months late to really do anything, but maybe, just maybe, it'll help prevent further big quakes in this area.

Where did you hear about the Oklahoma state govt. morons finally listening to the scientists about this?! They shoulda stopped fracking right after the last big earthquake in Nov. 2011 but didn't.

This is the same state govt. that gave huge tax breaks to energy companies to work here and that has backfired on the govt. Those tax breaks, had they not happened, coulda given state teachers, you know....grade school teachers, a much needed payraise. But now, the state can't do that due to the fact the state is broke!!!! Almost a billion in the hole!!!!

It's listed in almost all of the news stories about the earthquake. Here's one example from USA Today:

Also, here is a tweet from the governor from this morning:

It is also possible that the quake in Oklahoma could be related to the large quake in New Zealand on Friday. It's not uncommon for large tremors to shake things up in other parts of the world.

Another tidbit for your pipe is the activity with solar flares that have occurred in the last week. Science has linked earthquakes to these solar storms because of the affects they have on the earths magnetic fields.

No. No no no no no.

The New Zealand earthquake in no way caused anything related to the Oklahoma earthquake. Stresses don't travel that far away from the source, especially for earthquakes at that size. Stresses are only significant out to about 3 or 4 rupture lengths (i.e. the length of the fault that broke during the earthquake), which for events like this is 10s of kilometers, and maybe 100 km at best. Not all the way around the world.

Also, there have been no studies in peer-reviewed journals to my knowledge that have shown any correlation between solar storms and earthquake activity. None.

With out a doubt earthquakes can create a domino affect across the globe. As far as solar storms and how they relate to events on Earth is still something humanity is trying to understand. You have experts saying no there is no relation and then you have experts that say yes there is a possibility that solar activity and earthquakes are related. It should also be noted that the amount of equipment used to measure seismic activity has drastically increased over the last 15 years especially in areas where natural resource production is present. We are actually measuring more earthquakes today compared to years past simply because there are more areas being monitored for seismic activity. The research in Texas actually discovered a new fault.

I'm not dismissing the relationship between disposal wells and earthquakes but I think its important to look at all aspects of a situation.

Oklahoma Seismic Stations
1961-1977 - First and only seismic station in the state
1978-2008 - 9 seismic stations in the state
2009-2011 - 29 seismic stations in the state
2012-2013 - 35 seismic stations in the state
2014 - 55 seismic stations in the state

Kinda funny how they never provide you with all the data in the news headlines and now I'm done beating this dead horse :deadhorse1: :deadhorse1:
