Unfortunately, this summer has turned what once was a collective group of teams going after a common goal (AQ) to a conference much like the rest. A year ago everyone seemed to be rooting for BYU to take out Oklahoma, TCU to run the table, and all MWC teams to fair well out of conference.
That solidarity was unique to our conference and I miss it. Even for all my "Whitlessham invented pink" jokes and displeasure with conference trolls coming to our site to stir the pot, I still rooted for them against every BCS team, and in every bowl game. And, quite frankly I am a little disappointed that they (Utah and BYU) would want to leave an entire conference that has been fighting so hard for them to get the respect they deserve. Yes, I do understand why Utah would go, and it is hard to blame them. But they are throwing away rivalries, and hurting what I thought we all were working toward - AQ status.
Utah and BYU fans may say we did nothing to help the BCS cause over the last several years, but we know we did. We were beating SEC schools and winning bowls games in efforts to prove how good the entire conference was, not just us.
Although I recognized it before the reporters mention it on the Mtn Summit, and realize it is not an original thought (how unique the MWC solidaty is/was), I still think it is a valid point, we USED TO pull for each other.....after this summer, I don't think so............Why would I root for teams to prove how good our conference is just to leave the first chance they get? We seem to be falling into the same trap other conferences are in....a habit of pulling each other down, rather than lifting each other up.
Sure there will be the consistent fans that may always hate certain conference rivals that will never change, but I feel myself not caring about how the other schools do, when it used to be important to me in our quest for AQ. Maybe Wyo, TCU, or AFA going undefeated will bring that feeling back of arguing how good the MWC is to anyone that will listen and that the conf champ shoud be in a BCS game, but right now with Utah and BYU I do feel betrayed and don't care how the strength of the conference will help them.
So right now, I guess I will root for MWC teams (current and future), except for Utah and BYU---screw you guys for letting some of us root for you and taking that for granted.
