Bsu game thread

I agree. If this team stays together, and can stay healthy, they could go bowling next year. If players bolt, Sawvell will be coaching in an empty stadium.
That may be true to some extent, but this staff is utterly incompetent when it matters most. This is a persistent issue that hasn’t improved at all throughout the season and probably won’t. It’s one of the biggest differences between Bohl and Sawvel. Off the top of my head, Bohl usually emerged victorious in these close games, while Sawvel is O-Fer.

2024 season is woefully almost over...curious to see the transfer portal this year...I doubt there will be much loyalty to our Brown and Gold unfortunately

The D played pretty good this game. If Jeanty had his normal workload of 30+ carries, I'm not sure the D would have looked as good. He was about the only thing they had working consistently but he could gash the POKES. Coming in injured for 50+ yds to seal the game might help his Heisman chances.

Bad luck with Anderson going down. Hope he can make it back by wsu; the offense is so much different with him in there. It just boggles my mind why a starter was named almost a year ago. I hope he stays. A better staff and these same players = bowl game.

214 yds first half and dominated TOP at almost 19 minutes.
2nd half a little over 100 yards and TOP 15 minutes.

With a couple of calls/bounces and with Anderson in the game, I think it goes the POKES' way. To be fair, if they had Jeanty full health, it would have been out of reach. Still, it pisses me off that this season didn't have to be so bad.

It was a well fought game by the Pokes. A few calls here and there and you never know. Anderson might have gotten us over the hump, but he’s injury prone. IF this team can stay together and the portal doesn’t swing wide open to all of the key players, there’s no reason we can’t reload and have a much better year next season. Most of us don’t have confidence in the staff, but in the end, that doesn’t matter. If the players do, and they somehow gel, that’s what matters. In a few weeks we will know exactly what kind of team and staff we have. If they all bolt to the portal, that will say it all. Knowing that there won’t be a change at head coach, unless he chooses to leave, we gotta hope for the best for the kids. I didn’t think this game was going to be close and it was so why not keep a positive mindset!
You’re worried about losing players from a two win team?

Bad luck Anderson going down? No. They shouldn't be running him in the first place. This notion that a qb has to be a dual threat is why we have so many qb's going down at Wyoming. You don't see Boise st. or Fresno st. doing so many designed qb runs. There is a reason for that.

I wouldn’t say worried but if you look at who we lose to graduation, there’s not a whole lot there that we’ll miss.

Yes, there are some key components that we need back. If Anderson, Durr, King, Waylee, the Williams guys on defense, and a handful of other young guys that got time leave, then we have a major problem. The 2-10 record has been disappointing, but at least 5 of our games were ones that were winnable if appropriate clock management and key play calls were made. There is some talent there and Sawvel will use the portal-unlike C Bohl. But if he doesn’t have a base return, it’s an issue. The point I’m trying to make is if the players really believe in their coach, they’ll stay because they believe in what is being built. That’s what matters. We can all be disgruntled about the coaches but if the players buy in, things could turn around. The bottom line is I think we all thought that C Bohl left a full cupboard, but he didn’t. He neglected recruiting QBs and receivers for a LONG time. It was starting to catch up to us and he managed to get lucky a few times and won some games he shouldn’t have.

We actually have some decent receivers this season, which is unusual for Wyoming. Too bad we didn't have the coaching and QB talent to feed them. I'd be surprised if we didn't lose a couple.

I agree. Since it looks like UW is stuck with Sawvel because of the horrendous contract that Burman agreed to, I wonder if changing out OC and DC would be enough to keep the large number of expected players from hitting the portal?

I disagree. The dual threat QB is what wins and what the NFL wants. That is not to say running has to be the core of the skillset ( Svobda can run ) but needs to be present to keep defenses honest.

My understanding was that Anderson was hurt and couldn't play. My friend and I were at the game and didn't know who QB3 was after Clemons left the team.
It was a surprise that they said Anderson was injured, I did not notice anything wrong with him in the first half.

Absolute horseshit. I don't see Matthew Stafford or Patrick Mahomes going on designed runs. And if it's true, so what? Anderson is 6'2" and 190 lbs. and he isn't all that fast. Do you want a qb that can throw or do you prefer the Svoboda or Levi Williams type? The great big guy who can run and never hits the receiver in stride? Csewe just beat us without any qb designed runs. It's completely unnecessary - that is- unless your passing game is crap.

Never understood why Wyoming wouldn’t be interested in a spread offense. Why not take advantage of 7220 feet? Make defenders cover sideline to sideline.

The NFL wants a mentally astute QB that can recognize defenses and run the offense which requires first and foremost the ability to complete passes to the target or the check down proficiently.

The ability to take off and run while avoiding a vicious hit is the bonus of a dual threat but not a play the NFL team can survive with.

Bohl went for the run first QB with a minimal emphasis on the passing game despite any of the “need to improve” rhetoric. I do believe Bohl was more willing to absorb the passing game when he signed Anderson but it showed he wasn’t overly serious since he knew Peasley was around for one year and did nothing to have the team ready for this year committing to Svoboda and telling Sawville to stick with the plan.

Bohl and Sawville knew that Svoboda had major issues passing. They knew it when he was signed and there is no way either of them could claim it a surprise and disappointment that passing was his problem. They also knew going into this year Anderson was potentially questionable with his knee.

What do we have going into 2025?

Anderson - his physical health (knee) is the biggest concern. Otherwise he is a gamer.

Batiste - will he be allowed to fully participate in spring drills and compete for the starting position if he proves viable? If he is worthy of playing will he get his chances or be brushed aside. He has to be a viable contender for playing time.

Drube - assuming he signs is he ready to play effectively? Playing Wyoming 4A football is a whole different animal than the FBS. Doubt we see him within the next 2-3 years unless he is the most amazing QB talent. I have never seen him play so I have no idea of his abilities other than his recruiting profile.

Svoboda - not holding any hope he suddenly becomes a John Elway prototype (tired of the not close Allen comparisons).

Maybe I am wrong, but if Anderson goes down and Batiste is a version of Svoboda passing I don’t see team success brewing.

Sawville already admitted there are holes to fill and depth issues. He can do a lot to improve those areas but if we don’t have solid QB play with an ability to stretch the field passing I can’t see the W-L reversing itself. Sub .500 is unacceptable for any coaching staff and especially for this staff who was supposedly handpicked to sustain the ability to win 6+ games per season.

I am skeptical this staff will be willing to go all in on implementing a stout offense.

Huh? What did you think we were running under Christensen?

If Wyoming wants to be successful- Wyoming has to run something different than the majority of teams because we aren’t going to attract the best players for an offense everyone else runs and practices against.

If anything, we should be looking at pure smash mouth or option/wishbone/flexbone/etc.

Changing out coordinators is not a way to decrease portal entries. Quite the opposite typically. But a 2-10 team hardly should be worried about who leaves and should be focused on rebuilding a destroyed program.

I don’t think Drube will start as a freshman, but I would bet heavily on him being our most skilled QB by his 2nd year here. He is easily the best high school QB Wyoming has had in the last 25 years.

What is always difficult to predict is how a QB can deal with the mental side of the game. You have to be willing to put hours into the mental side of the game to be successful at this level as a QB. If Drube is willing to do that, I truly believe he can do big things at Wyoming.

You misunderstand my comment. I am not referring to designated runs. I am referring to the ability to scramble and if the opportunity is there run for first down.
This is the Mahomes model . He runs but only when the opportunity is present. Today he ran for 58 yards to set up the game winning FG.

Anderson is never going to be that athletic. But he has great pocket presence. He gets rid of the ball quickly. These are things Svoboda will never have. If he has to scramble, ok. But designed runs for a guy who has a bad knee and only weighs 190 lbs. seems stupid to me. Anderson had 3 runs in the first half. That's just asking for disaster. Plus, they know we have nothing behind him. Maybe less than nothing.
