Brett Smith Hit

All 3 hits were good, hard football hits by a very good linebacker. Personally, I think that's how football should be played. When you get the chance to lay the wood on a guy, then you should do it. Sometimes big hits result in injuries, but that's part of playing football.

Should Carder have been flagged? Debatable. In the end, my personal feeling is that all these new rules that result in a penalty in the vast majority of hard hits are pure bullshit. I hate the rule when UW gets flagged and I hate it just as much when our opponent gets flagged. Let the dudes play.

I wouldn't say much about the hits on Smith had Butler not been called for a personal foul when he tackled their receiver. It was pretty much the same thing as Cader. Also if there hadn't been pass interference on that play, which nobody said. Also if there hadn't been assorted holding incidents. And you know what, somebody had a guilty conscience. How many times have your ever heard an official announce to the crowd that a play was a clean play.

+1

Football has become so pussyfied. At some point we will be playing flag football. I don't think any of those flags should have been thrown.

I'd give anything to take another hit like Brett Smith took. That means I would still be playing football :)

I try to stay out of these types of discussions but honestly those hits were legal and clean.

Tank is a great football player and he hits hard. To many people on this board whining over nothing. Fact is the hits were legal and Smith got hit hard. It has happened before to other quarterbacks. Just because someone gets knocked out of a game doesn't make it illegal. To many sensitive people on here looking through brown and gold goggles.

I wish Smith wouldn't have gotten knocked out and I hate seeing kids get hurt but I am also realistic. The hit was clean. It is part of football.

2) Your QB Smith said at the end of the game that he got the wind knocked out of him. If the hit was helmet-to-helmet as you all proclaim, then how did he get the wind knocked out of him on the play? Since when does a headshot knock the air out of a guy?

My guess is that Smith had the wind knocked out of him when Carter threw a forearm into Smith's chest. I know he did that on the last hit, but I'm pretty sure Carter did it on the others as well. I don't care if that's legal or not, it's dirty, and Carter was gunning for Smith to put him out of the game.

Hard hits are part of the game, and I've got no problem with a LB taking the lane he's given and smacking our QB - that's on our OL. I do have a problem with him aiming for the QB's chin, leading with his helmet, taking extra steps, and throwing that forearm into the QB's chest. Wrap him up and put him on the ground. The rest is unnecessary and makes you look like an a-hole.

Have fun in the Big 12. Texas Christian (always that, never TCU) is gonna need it.

I'm confused...do you envision a D Lineman running up to the QB and then shaking his hand and politely asking him to allow him to escort him to the ground?! It's football! If you ask any LB or DLineman in the country (including Wyoming's) they will all tell you the same thing. Their job is to take the QB OUT! They don't want to seriously hurt or kill but if they can take him out of the game they would do it in a second. It's a contact sport, shame him for putting a forearm to the chest, really? As long as they are acting within the confines of the rules (forearm to the chest is legal), then play ball. If he doesn't wrap up then be a player and keep running. You're making our players out to be pussies that can't take some hard hits, I trust they can suck it up.

As long as the officiating crew calls the game consistently the same from start to end, and the same way to both sides, I have no problem. In this game, they didn't.

I'm not making anybody out to be a pussy, and I think Smith showed on Saturday that he can take some big hits and get back up. I distinctly saw him say something to the effect of "I want to be out there" while the coaches kept him sidelined (for good reason). That shows me he's Cowboy Tough.

And no, I don't expect a LB to let up when he has an open lane. I said so in my post. I just don't like to see a guy throw an extra forearm when he's obviously about to lay the wood to a relatively defenseless QB. Legal or not, it's dirty, unnecessary, and shows me that said LB is trying to hurt a guy. The goal should not be to hurt someone, and that's what I saw on Saturday.

That's exactly right. And it allowed Carter to continue making those hits. Our OL should have been able to stop that blitz but they weren't. That last hit obviously changed the game, and that shouldn't rest with the officiating crew.

Regardless of the outcome, it's time to move on and get ready for AF. Looking forward to a good game this weekend.

If Burns got called for helmet to helmet, then Tank's hit should have been called too. Needs to go both ways.

Now that im home and had a chance to watch replays, it wasn't late. Sorry tank, I don't wish you bodily harm. I still think the call on burns was bad, and there was pass interference on the smith knock out play. Officials might have made the wrong call giving us the gabe knapton fumble recovery at the 20. Oh well, its over time to focus on afa.

The second hit (in the video) was a direct crown of helmet to chin of smith and should be an ejectable offense. That was the most blatant hit trying to hurt another player as I've ever seen. I still think the one that put smith out was fairly clean.

That's the one I had an issue with as well. I hated seeing the last hit, but I won't call it dirty, as I'd love for our linebackers to put that kind of hurt on opposing quarterbacks.

the second hit you can actually see him "launch" his head towards brett's head. I couldn't believe it was called as it was the most blatant. I don't know if they thought they incorrectly called the first one and were making up for it, but the second one should never have been missed. It's the type of hit that the MW could look at and do something. When I see it now, I actually think he should have been ejected. It was late and he launched. The last one (the one that took him out) he hit smith as he was throwing and redirected the path of the ball. The other one was after brett had thrown.

I thought the first helmet to helmet that was called was the right call and unfortunate, but as unfortunate as it was, it is a part of the game sometimes. Brett got up, and threw a TD pass to Doctson.

The second one, Tank Carder's 1st hit, was a viscious helmet to helmet illegal hit that should have been flagged and wasn't. Ultimately I fault the officiating because if the first one was a flag the second one should have definitely been a flag. I think Brett knew he was going to take a shot but kept his eyes downfield on Chris and had a big completion on that play. Brett got up, and threw a TD pass to Ogbonna. He also threw one to Herron previously that should have been caught for a TD.

Carders last hit I thought was a clean hit, but I think the cummulative effect of all of them took its toll at that point.

My takeaway from all of it is what a tough mother we have back there playing QB for us. To have the wherewithal to stand in there and drive for TD's after having taken some unbelieveable punishment is most impressive to me and shows me all this kid wants to do is win. They call Blair Burns' hit a penalty...what a piss-poor joke of a call.

Losing Ghaali was a critical blow for us. We could not sustain anything on the ground and that really hurt us offensively. If we are going to be successful we have to get more stops on D and our O has to keep the their defense honest with a running game. It can't be just Brett scrambling around and gaining 10 yards on tuck and runs. He cannot be exposed that much because the secret is definitely out on this kid around the league and teams definitely will take their shots to minimize the threat he poses. Miller is hurt, Ghaali is hurt, and Alvester ain't enough. Time to bring in Kody Sutton?

It's time for AA to stop pussy-footing around the backfield and run north and south. Every time he stopped running and started dancing, he got clobbered for a loss.

He's just waiting to pounce on the lambs again.

He had 123 against AFA last year, we'll see what he does this year, since their D has been plagued by injuries, UNM was a big game for him and so was CSU.

From what some of their fans are saying, just about all of their injured defensive players are back.
