Bolling and Morgan Suspended

Greg Bolling will miss the first two games of the season and Donate Morgan will miss the opener for violating "team standards".

This is very interesting considering these guys hold the top 2 spots at the X position on the depth chart. That means will be seeing a lot of more of Travis Burkhalter and Zach Bolger against Weber St. This might also "force" the coaching staff to play some of the true freshman WR's as well.

I think it is also interesting to note how few suspensions we had during the Glenn era. Maybe it was just that they recruited good kids who kept out of trouble...or maybe they just weren't being watched very closely.

Bolling was suspended from the University before, for academic reasons and had to take classes at LCCC to be reinstated.

both players are Glenn players.

I think we can play without them just fine. Bring in the true freshmen, im sure they are better than both of those guys

Being suspended for grades has to do with NCAA and University rules, not team rules. Although I don't know why Bolling and Morgan were suspended, I get the feeling it has absolutely nothing to do with grades. Christensen expects his players to act a certain way and if they don't, he is going to put them on the bench. Something tells me if this same incident occured with Glenn in charge, we would have never heard about it and no penalties would have been handed down.

I also have to totally disagree with you about us being just fine without them. Bolling is the best pure receiver on the team. His routes and releases from the line are the best of any of the WR's. He also may be the ONLY receiver on the team who knows how to adjust his routes to take advantage of the open spaces when facing zone coverage schemes. The freshman we brought in at WR are definitely not game changers and wouldn't even get a sniff of the field at most other MWC programs as true freshman. Chris McNeill has a chance to be good, but he is nowhere close to being ready to be a starting receiver at this time. Just my opinion from the tape I have watched on the guy. There is a reason that Bolling and Morgan were penciled in at the top of the depth chart following spring practice, even though they were both injured and hardly saw the field. The guys under them just aren't that good. Now, the same guys who weren't good enough to take their spots are going to be the guys on the field. Not a good thing for the Pokes if you ask me.

Tough start for a tough season to come. Discipline however, is essential to a healthy team environment. Apparently Coach means to have a well behaved squad, good for him. I thought Glenn should have shut the mouth on his player that was sounding off prior to the 50-0 ass kicking put on them by Utah, but he chose to back his mouthy player and flip off the Utah sideline instead.

I really think a lot of Joe, but this kind of stuff does not help build a program.

Best wishes for Coach Christensen, he is going to need all the luck he can find over the next few seasons.

Hey UW...

A couple of thoughts...

First, Donate is a lame duck. The kid drops everything that hits him in the hands. He is nothing special, but obviously thinks he is "above the law" by violating team rules. Hey Donate, do something before you claim to be a superstar.

As far as Bolling, the guy that was to be the next Bouknight. What a MAJOR disappointment he has been. I have waited for YEARS to see him do SOMETHING. Granted, we were in the Joe Glenn slow-down 4 corner offense this past year, but still...he has done nothing to impress me. When his career at UW is over, and a couple of years pass by, nobody will even remember his name.

Lastly, you are probably dead on about out depth though. Damn.

From Northern Wyoming Daily News:

Cowboy receiver duo suspended

LARAMIE (AP) — Wyoming coach Dave Christensen says senior wide receivers Greg Bolling and Donate Morgan have been suspended for specific games next season because of violations of team standards.

Bolling will be suspended for the first two games of the season against Weber State and Texas. Morgan will be suspended for the Weber State game.

Christensen declined to provide further details other than to say players need to understand that there are consequences for their actions.

Bolling led UW in receiving last season with 26 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Morgan had 11 catches for 95 yards and one score.

Anyone else think this a huge blow for the Pokes? I know the WR corps is already struggling, but losing your two outside WRs against Weber State can't help the cause.

No. This is not a huge blow. Again, Donate hasn't done anything to impress me (his nickname should be stonefingers)...and frankly, neither has Bolling. Maybe people will start to learn these names now: Travis Burkhalter, Brandon Stewart, and David Leonard...as they have just as much if not more skills as WR's than the affore mentioned 2 rule breakers. IMO...Brandon Stewart is the cream of the crop anyway.

I haven't met one Weber fan that wasn't a complete retard. Is it the water? :ugeek:

Donate Morgan isn't that big of a loss although it does hurt our depth when our depth is very weak to begin with at the WR position. He also possesses some legitimate speed which can force a safety to play over the top, leaving more room for other receivers to work underneath. Losing Greg Bolling is a huge loss though. I've said it a few times before, but Brandon Stewart is mainly a big play threat and not so much a polished every down receiver. Stewart certainly can do big things once the ball is in his hands. The problem is getting him open so the QB's can get him the ball. His footwork and understanding of how to play WR looked a bit better this spring, but he still has a long way to go. It is the small things like how a guy comes off the line, his handwork when a DB is playing press coverage, and his ability to find the weak spots in zone coverages that make the difference between a 3 catch per game WR and a 10 catch per game WR. Bolling might not be as athletic, quick, or shifty as Stewart, but he does those little things the best out of any WR we have on the roster. That's why I fully expect him to have a very good season and be the #1 target on the majority of passes this coming season. Obviously then, I think his loss is very detrimental to the team.

David Leonard and Brandon Stewart were already slated to start at the WR position so people would have become accustomed to hearing those names anyways. Now, some of the backups and younger guys are probably going to be forced into much more playing time than they originally would have saw in the first 2 games. Lets remember, these guys were backups for a reason. I hope we have an allstar WR in this freshman class, but I didn't see it when I watched film on them. Hopefully I'm proven wrong. Having 3 solid receivers is fine for running most offenses, but you need a lot more good receivers than that if you expect to run the pass first spread offense effectively. The Pokes will be using many 5 WR sets and WR's are usually constantly rotated in and out to keep their legs fresh. We really need to find a minimum of 7 solid WR's to make this offense work and its not uncommon to see a rotation of 10 or more WR's in an offense like this. That's what concerns me most about these suspensions. Even if these guys were terrible WR's, they could at least go in and give some of the betters ones a rest. Now, that isn't an option for the first 2 games.

Interesting statement from Bolling about "now that I see he's not playing around, I'm here 100 percent, no matter what." Guess we can lead to our own conclusions about the former staff from this comment.
