2026 is the designated breakout year

We will never be worth a shXt as long as Sawvel is here. His in game decisions are just bizarre. The clock management resembles a Chinese fire drill. On the sidelines, he looks like a toddler who's been put in a timeout, hardly the stuff of a great leader. After the game, he wastes all his energy on defending Svoboda and his decision to play him, instead of praising Anderson. . He has to be Burman's long lost brother. The sheep got rid of Addazio after 16 games. 12 is more than enough for Sawvel.

He recieved the 600k bonus in 2023 I think and Burman made a comment that it took years to build from private donations.

Look all I'm saying is that the AD budget is what 50 mill? Didn't they also claim 1.7 mill in profit that allegedly goes back to UW central funds?

It's inconvenient but manageable for a couple of years especially if there is a clause about gaining new employment, which I would guess there is.
So, without muddying the waters with clauses that may or may not be there....the starting point in considering the cost to move off of Sawvell after this year is 4.7m...that is probably paid out over the contract. This is dead money that is not being used for other things like coaches salary (assistant or head), or anything else...it's just a cost. If you compare it to what Bohl would have made by extending his salary (not including the one-time bonus he got for a decade of service), a case can be made that the cost is only 2m.

I would love to see them make the move....I think calling it "inconvenient" is understating it a bit but I get your point. If you view him as the end of competetive football at UW then you better pony up now and get rid of him. The problem is that all of the dollars at UW have a constituency. Somebody is going to complain no matter what you do. No matter how you structure it, the decision to hire Sawvell is going to cost UW in the long run. Either you rip the band-aid off and roll the dice on another hire which declares for all the mistake that was made. Or you take the chance that there is some growth and development that is happening in Sawvell and his staff.

If those are my choices...I hope they rip the band-aid off but I can see how reasonable people can disagree. I'm not sure either approach is obviously better...both seem to have low likelihoods of working out.

So you guys think it’s worth it to pay top dollar for assistants?
?
In my opinion, PBJ needs canned now and someone placed interim.
After that, ad profits and Bohl salary savings go to PBJ buyout.
Assuming we have around 1.2 mill, Burman (preferably someone else) needs to leverage future exit penalty money to get a little more in the kitty for the next hire who I think needs to be an established coach along the lines of a Bronco, Kill, etc. Before certain posters blow up, I'm not advocating those individuals specifically nor their programs/philosophy specifically just as an example of established coaches. Give the new hire time to recruit the roster.

If your goal is to win championships....Pay your coaches at the top of your conference, every year. Fire them for not winning. Anything less than that is some version of a college having an athletic program that is an outreach and marketing tool only. They are funding it to have it because everybody else does. I think that actually is what is happening at UW and a lot of universities.

This whole discussion ignores the real problem. Burman has to be the first to go before there is any real hope things will get better.
Let's hope they do that. We have to change the philosophy somehow. I dislike the "call everybody corrupt" approach to criticizing the administration.....it's not accurate and causes people to focus in the wrong places. Burman is the wrong guy for the job right now. That's it. If his job were to caretake a very successful program he could probably succeed but we need a guy (or gal) that has some plan to remake athletics at UW. It's broken and Burman is unable to do anything except what has been done before.

Everyone seems to have tthis idea that there is some possiblity that there will be a change in the athletic director. The BOT and President are paying him MORE than any other athletic director in the MWC. His salary is $551,000 per year. The message that sends is he's donig a great job. It's a bunch of good old boys that run UW -- look at the salaries of those people at UW they are happily getting paid well, they don't want any change either. Dave True, Brad Bonner, KErmit Brown they aren't going to do anything, they are just part of the good old boys club. THe comments on these message boards don't matter. THe only possiblity of any change is that the Freedom Caucus would just start cutting some of the budgets at UW including athletics. That wouldn't be popular with the fans on the message boards, but it might result in some lower salaries, staff reductions or elimination of programs.

I totally agree that another year of this will be absolutely killer for the program. I’m just being realistic on what will likely happen given our AD and fiscal constraints.

A Hail Mary would be Craig Bohl willing to coach next year at a greatly reduced salary while the program transitions. He could probably salvage a 6 win season with the players remaining. The only incentive for Bohl would be to save his son’s career because after this Aaron Bohl will be looking for defensive back assistant positions in FCS. I know most people would be against Craig Bohl returning like that but I would welcome it knowing that it could save the program and set us up to bring in a real staff (maybe even a Vigen or Polasek - - arguably the 2 best FCS coaches right now).
He would have to demote his son in order to be HC again. The neptism rules at Uwyo wouldn't allow it.
