Murray's MW rankings: Wyoming goes from worst to first (Reno Gazette-Journal)

1. Wyoming
Comment:
In the first power rankings of the season, Wyoming was dead last. In the final power rankings of the season, the Cowboys finish first. Is Wyoming really the best team in the league? Probably not. But they beat Boise State and San Diego State and deserve this position, especially after trudging through a two-win campaign last year. All Wyoming has to do to play in its first MW championship game is beat New Mexico on Saturday or have Boise State lose to Air Force on Friday.

Thanksgiving can be tough for college football players and coaches because, more often than not, they’re season is still going on.

Wyoming is no different as it prepares to play its regular-season finale Saturday at New Mexico. Third-year coach Craig Bohl said there will be a “big team dinner” planned for Thanksgiving day.

I asked some guys on the team two questions leading into Thanksgiving: What they’re most thankful for and their favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal. Here are the responses:

Strength of Wins

I find this chart to be very interesting every year. How it’s devised is if you beat an FBS opponent you get credit for all their wins over their FBS opponents. Note this chart does not count wins over FCS teams even if they are 11-0.

Rothe’s confidence grows as warm-up habits change (WyoSports.net)

“At the start of the season, every time the offense had the ball, I was constantly kicking into the net and trying to stay warm the entire time,” Rothe said. “I was killing my leg. Now, I kick a couple of times into the net once we get into good field position and enjoy the flow of the game.”

“Cooper’s gotten better in terms of his technique in getting his hips through and keeping his head down; it’s very similar to a golf swing,” Bohl said. “We’ve been well pleased with his progress.”

Bowl talk: Davie prefers a ‘home’ game (Albuquerque Journal)

How do you beat the team that beat up the team that just beat you up?

Coach Bob Davie’s succinct answer: “Play better.”

The Wyoming Cowboys, the surprise team of the Mountain West Conference this season, comes to Albuquerque to play the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday night. A Wyoming victory would put the Cowboys in the MWC title game Dec. 3.

Wyoming senior receiver Jake Maulhardt shows San Diego State what it missed (trib.com)

LARAMIE — It’s safe to say Jake Maulhardt is happy with where he’s at.

The Wyoming senior receiver, a native of Camarillo, California, was recruited out of high school by San Diego State, which Wyoming hosted Saturday on the Cowboys’ Senior Day.

Before the game, Maulhardt spoke for 15 minutes with Atecs running backs coach Jeff Horton, who had recruited him. Growing up, Maulhardt played basketball with Kendrick Mathis, an Aztecs receiver.

PODCAST: Week 13 Mountain West football preview (MWCconnection.com)

We do get to the games after the lengthy start and it begins on Friday with Boise State at Air Force and this is a game that the Broncos must win if they want to have a chance to win the division.

Saturday the big game is Wyoming at New Mexico where if things go nuts the Lobos might have a way to win the Mountain Division (we were not entirely clear as the tiebreaking rules are odd), but what we do know is that if Wyoming wins they are in the conference title game and have a rematch with San Diego State.

Lobo Football: UNM, Wyoming To Compete in 'Over-Achiever Bowl' (the lobolair.com)

Judging by their respective news conferences this week, Davie was the coach who appeared to be more on edge.

Davie tried to end the news conference twice before reporters were done asking questions.

Cell phones went off during each’s news conference. While Davie stopped talking, waited for the noise to stop and stoically moved forward, Bohl made a joke when the cell phone interrupted his talk, praising the ringtone for being the Cowboys fight song.

College football: Seniors have fueled UNM’s turnaround (Albuquerque Journal)

Of Saturday night, he said, “It’s special, because I came in with all these guys that are leaving,” he said. “It shows you that time flies by. It was a blessing to come in with those guys because of what we came into.”

Wyoming senior Chase Appleby's storybook senior season comes to an end (trib.com)

"It’s still a movie, man," he said. "I told you at the beginning of the year I’d go as long as I could. If this is the end, it’s the end. If it’s not, I would love it not to be. I would love to get back and play a couple more downs, but you can’t ask for anything better after what we’ve been through."

Tied 28-all late in the fourth quarter against Boise State on Oct. 29, Appleby's strip sack of Broncos quarterback Brett Rypien sent the ball out of the back of the end zone, giving Wyoming a 30-28 win.

"That’ll be with me until the day I die," Appleby said. "Just the implications of everything. I know we won the boot at Colorado State, and I had the touchdown, but the way everyone played that day, no one picked us to win, that’ll be with me forever.

He has been an integral part of the defense this year, no doubt about that. It sucked that his season (and college career) came to such an end, and he will be missed.

Wyoming's Conner Cain, Youhanna Ghaifan to play bigger roles in Chase Appleby's absence (trib.com)

"There was a lady that came up to me Saturday and asked what they’re going to do next year about the person who pumps up the crowd," Appleby said. "I said, ‘Someone else is going to have to learn it.’"

Sophomore Conner Cain will be called upon in both capacities, and Wyoming's defense will also need help from freshman Youhanna Ghaifan at defensive tackle, where Cain was previously starting.

"You never want somebody to get hurt," Ghaifan said. "But it’s always next man up."

Wyoming coaches know Prosser is capable of more (WyoSports.net)

“It’s slowly getting there and his maturity is coming along, but we’d like to see more consistency,” Cooper said “Athletically, he’s as good as anyone in this league. When he flashes and really plays fast, he’ll spin around guys and run guys down.”

“I don’t pay attention to my stats,” Prosser said. “I just focus on my job and not letting my teammates down. But this year has been a lot more different than last year. I’m definitely more comfortable.”

Wyoming at New Mexico football Q&A with Rick Wright of the Albuquerque Journal (WyoSports.net)

New Mexico was in the mix for a Mountain Division title until it lost 49-31 at Colorado State. Even though the Lobos can still tie for the division title, they are out of playing in the conference championship game. Do you think the team will be motivated to play Wyoming or will the loss last week make it tough?

I don't think motivation will be a problem. It's senior night and, pending the location of the bowl game, could be the last game the seniors play on their home field. New Mexico was embarrassed somewhat at Colorado State, and the players will be motivated not to let that happen again.
