Just like that, we are into the final weekend of the season. A lot of unknowns at the beginning of the season and a lot of different starting line-ups. In 2021, Wyoming finished 1-10 in duals and had a different starting lineup for each dual; I am aware of how many different lineups they had this year but finished 7-1 in Big12 duals. Talk about growth from the team and coaching staff.

Another dual and another win! Wyoming is going to want that West Virginia dual back with the possibility of going 8-0 in Big 12s, but 7-1 is just as respectable. On Sunday we also honored six wrestlers for their final bout: Jared Hill, Gabe Willochell, David Saenz, Dylan Catlin, Brett McIntosh, and Jack Braman.
I am not sure who won the coin toss on Sunday but was interested to see the dual start at 157. Jared was an OU transfer to Wyoming; I am sure there was tension in the UniWyo for this match. Jared just wanted to extend his last home match by heading to SV and a famous body lock. Great win Cowboy.

Lights Out in Greely: Wyoming Wrestlers Tuck the Bears in for Hibernation
The Boys rode into Greeley last night and escaped with a 25-10 dual win. Wyoming was without regular starters 157 Jared Hill and HWT Christian Carroll; Carroll seemed a little banged up last weekend so probably worth the rest. Some of the Cowboys got back on the winning track while others let the Bears dictate the match.
Sefton got back into his winning ways with a 3-0 victory; he probably wanted some back swipes but never got the opportunity. Luke Willochell faced the lone ranked wrestler for the Bears, Serrano, and would come up short in a 15-3 loss. Luke didn’t back down and was in on shots, but Serrano was so quick to counter. Wyoming took this last week to re-adjust, and the results speak for themselves on the mat. NDSU was coming off a dual win against UVU while on a six dual winning streak; they were buzzing.
Wyoming sent out three 125s during introductions: Owens, Sefton, and Harrison. I thought Harrison was out of matches to preserve his RS, but it was Owens who made the start at 125. Wyoming guys are firing off on shots but just come up short in these matches I think one win here would go a long way at 125. Tucker would lose via TF. Last Saturday I was concerned the season grind was starting to affect the team. A weird effort at WVU and last week against Oregon State where guys were rolling on the mat after a whistle and were just flat! Coaches changed workouts for them, and did they ever respond last night. The team might have got so much into a pre-match routine during the week that when the travel delayed them getting home, it threw the team for a loop.
I spoke to Coach Branch and Coach Ford about it last night, and it was still fresh on their minds and weren’t sure how they would look. Being in the room, the team seemed loose, and the fans were filling in to make the UniWyo a loud place.

Wyoming vs Oregon State
I think a lot of us struggled to watch a flat effort, and I was up in the air writing a blog because it didn’t feel like there was much to write about. I watched a video of UNI Coach Schwab talking to his team about a rough weekend and his team going 0-2. Added to that was Coach Branch sending a picture to X riding a horse out in the prairie taking some reflection. My son Jameson continues to ask me when the Cowboys play again; he will ask me to pull up old videos and watch and cheer just like they are live in action. It was mentioned to me that it is better to have these “efforts” in Jan vice March when everything is on the line.

I knew this dual would be a tall task for Wyoming, and they would need everyone to be their best to escape Morgantown with a win. West Virginia had some gamesmanship with a gymnastic match going on right behind the Wyoming bench; talk about a distraction. The city of Laramie received a lot of love Saturday during the Divisional Round playoff matchup between Buffalo and Denver. Whether it was in relation to Laramie-native, Frank Crum, or Laramie super star, Josh Allen, the Gem City of the Plains was referenced multiple times.
The first Laramie name drop occurred when former University of Wyoming offensive lineman Frank Crum rumbled into the end zone in a gadget-play touchdown.
Another Laramie mention occurred when referencing former Wyoming quarterback Allen and one of his remarkable plays.

Roughly 116 years ago a young man named Clayton Danks rode Steamboat and the Wyoming logo was born. Wherever Mr. Danks was watching from, I hoped he enjoyed this Wyoming Wrestling win in front of a great home crowd. It was an inspiration for the graphic this week.

It was nothing short of herculean what Josh Allen did Sunday at Jacksonville during the Wild Card Round. With any number of injuries ailing him, the former University of Wyoming student-athlete helped Buffalo rally past the Jaguars, 27-24.
Allen was 28-for-35 for 273 yards and one touchdown. He added 33 yards on 11 carries via the ground with an additional two scores.
Allen, taking into account both the regular season and playoffs, is 347-for-495 for 3,941 yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. On the ground, he’s totted it 123 times totaling 612 yards and 16 scores.
The Bills advance to play the top-seeded Broncos in Denver. That Divisional Round game is slated for Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
