[WyoNation Blog] Quarterback Position Preview

It was pretty good. You said how Kirkgaard will only see time if Thompson and Smith are both injured and I am not sure about that.
If Smiths helmet comes off and he has to sit out a play, they are sending in Kirkgaard. No point in wasting an entire season for Thompson for 1 snap. Same thing with blowouts, if the Pokes are up big they will put in Kirkgaard.
But, if there is situation, where Smith comes out for good, and the game isn't in the hands of Wyo yet, and is still up for grabs, Thompson will come in.
Technically yes Thompson is the 2nd string QB, and is a lot better than Kirkgaard, but they also plan on red shirting him. They will only play Thompson if needed, Kirkgaard gets the bulk of the snaps that will not affect the outcome of a game.

Accuracy is not the only issue that Thompson needs to fix. He needs to learn to control his throws, particularly the short throws, as during his game against Air Force, on quick slants he would throw the ball like he was trying to make a Hail Mary Pass, with as much power he put behind it.

It is going to be kinda unfair on Thompson when Wyo fans talk about him. He was only a true freshman last year, and he did decent. But then Wyo fans think of Brett Smith, and all he accomplished as a true freshman, same with ACS.
It isn't easy for a true freshman to come in and perform well. ACS and Brett Smith are just a special breed.

Thompson will learn a LOT working with Gesser this season, and hopefully he gets to red-shirt.
I see Gesser working with Thompson a lot more than he will be working with Smith, not saying that Smith doesn't need any coaching, but Smith will probably be working with DC a lot more 1-on-1.

Thompson red shirting this season, then getting playing time behind Smith next season will be great for Thompson, and Wyo.
Hopefully Thompson is over a year away from seeing playing time again, that way the Pokes can get the best out of him.
Not only that but he will develop good chemistry with the future WRs that will be starting like Nico Brown, Trent Sewell, Tanner Simpson.

That's a fair point with the helmet issue BeaverPoke but the bottomline is Kirkegaard shouldn't see any meaningful playing time.

Just pointing out something that Thompson needs to work on. Because having a powerful arm with limited accuracy and little control is going to hold ANY QB back, regardless of the school. That said, I do like what I see from Thompson. He's an aggressive runner like Brett, but with a thicker body (220lbs last I heard) and plays with the same intensity as well. But most QBs usually have an easier time with the short pass than the deep pass, which makes improving Thompson an interesting endeavor. But he still needs to work on accuracy an control regardless.

I agree 100%. I think we see Kirkgaard in games like (hopefully) Idaho, Northern Colorado, and Texas St. when the Pokes are up by 25 in the 4th quarter. No point in wasting a season for Thompson to come in, in a game like that.
Even if the Pokes are down by 40 against someone and Brett gets hurt I don't think Thompson needs to come in.

But if it is half time and the Pokes are tied and Smith has to leave the game then Thompson is coming in I believe.

I agree in the fact that Kirkgaard shouldn't see any MEANINGFUL playing time. He might have SIGNIFICANT playing time if the Pokes are blowing teams out like we all want. But yeah if there is a game that is up for grabs, Thompson is the man to go to.
