WYOMING v. NEVADA

Haha entertaining thread, some of the reactions make me chuckle. Tough loss no doubt, but for some reason it doesn't bother me very bad...... several things went against us tonight that were out of our control. I thought the effort was there for the most part, the shots just didn't drop in the 2nd half that did in the first half. One in particular I can think of was when Josh had a great spin drive and beautiful kick to trey for a wide open corner three with maybe 3 minutes left or something, can't remember for sure, I think we were down 1. That shot goes in it changes the whole complexion of the last couple minutes but it didn't. I also thought that skirmish that took like 10 minutes to sort out really killed our momentum and was a game changing shift. Anyways, battle throughout, big credits from me to Josh of course, also Lieberman, Dalton, Trey had some very nice moments as well. Herndon was maybe my only low spot for the game, but could'a been worse. All in all, the world isn't ending, 'nother game saturday as Josh's legendary senior season rolls on!!

If this program ever wants to have big crowds again it has to stop losing to inferior teams at home.
Be interesting to hear if Shyatt wants to talk about his "critics" tonight.

Not really sure what you guys expect? We have the 4th youngest team in the country. Going to be like this the rest of the year so everyone should get used to it. Actually everyone should already be used to it and expect this.

Next year will be better.

Nevada isn't an inferior team. They are just as good as Wyoming. Lots of parity in the conference this year.
The guys that played tonight are not that young. Josh is a senior Mac a junior Herndon redshirt sophomore. Jeremy and Gorski sophomores.

3 sophomores. Young. Unless you have more juniors and seniors you are a young team. Wyoming overall is a young team. No upperclassmen depth at all.

Why is it that we all concede the fact that we are a super young team, will be consistent, and to expect this all year....and then when it happens we all lose our shit? Haha, it's hilarious.

These losses don't bother me at all because I can see what we have over the next few years.

If Wyoming somehow gets to post season this year with this team then I consider it icing on the cake.

Just because we can agree this team is young and will have its ups and downs doesn't mean we have resigned ourselves to apathy. It pisses me off to lose. It pisses me off to watch this team fight and claw and scrap just to have it not pay off. It really pisses me off to be up 9 and have one of our players punched only to watch THEIR team get 4 free throws, the ball, and the a complete shift in momentum.

Admitting their young doesn't mean losing is acceptable or fun

It'd really has to do with a general lack of talent and size 6'1 6'2 and 6'4 won't change in a year or two by then they will have graduated.

What do we have though? Nevada's freshman big dominated our sophomores in the paint. That's only going to get worse over the next couple of years.

Shyatt and his staff flat out dropped the ball in recruiting. We have some quality talent, but nowhere near enough to develop into a contender. He has now painted himself into a corner as we lack the talent to compete for the next couple of years and we lack open scholarships to do anything about it.

I actually think we have plenty of talent at the guard and wing position. The main thing is the big's down low. I think Naughton will be good enough to compete in the MWC but we need to add another unless Barnes improves a lot. So I am not quite as pessimistic as everyone else yet. If we end up playing like this next year then I will start to worry. Until then I will wait and let it play out and see what happens. I already knew this years team wasn't going to do much.

I tend to agree. I am not as worried going forward as I am for the immediate games. Herndon, Barnes, Naughton, Moemeka, and Dalton will all contribute and be valuable in the next couple seasons. Shyatt has shown the ability to develop and this is the best group of bigs he has had yet in terms of pure, raw talent. He will get them all polished and ready to kick ass.

I agree that the main issue is down low, but that's kind a major issue, no? Only one player that can compete in the MWC is not a recipe for success. Keep in mind we have zero schollies open for 2016 and one for 2017.

I am hopeful that Moemeka can develop into a MWC player as he appears to have high level athelticism and I actually think if we give Dalton a redshirt year and 5000 calories/dy he could be a rotation guy on a decent MWC team. Still, that's a lot of hope, maybe, and what-if.

I agree with you. I think if he had a legit big man this year then this years team would be quite a bit better. I am concerned about it but I guess I am hoping in my mind that somehow Shyatt will pull some magic and develop Naughton, Barnes, Herdon and Moemeka this off season and they will be better than I expect. If not then we will probably start to see fire Shyatt threads by the end of next season.

This ultimately is why I am pretty much at rock bottom in terms of my hopes for UW athletics right now. If guys like Bohl, Legerski, and Shyatt can't convince MWC caliber athletes to choose UW than maybe it is impossible to win in Laramie with any kind of consistency.

Yeah I have had those same thoughts. I am hopeful that the basketball team and the football team are just both young and the next couple of years are going to be better than expected.

This loss bugged me a little bit, Shyatt knows what he is doing but I didn't like the rotation at the end of the game.

Was at the game. The refs were terrible all night in Nevada's favor and the result was a screw job like I've never seen. We were robbed.

If we are supposed to accept that this is a young team that is going to be up and down, it's also time to accept MWC officiating is always going to suck. Blaming the refs is pointless.

I don't see how Barnes will ever contribute. Dude is clueless out there. He's another's Sellers. Let's just hope he quits like Sellers did so it opens a scholarship for someone who can walk and chew gum at the same time.

That white haired piece of shit ref has been screwing us all year. David Hall aside, this guy is the worst ref in the league. Honestly the rest are bad, but they are bad both ways. Some guys just hate going to Wyoming and take it out on the team.

Also what is with having Lieberman in for 35 minutes? They guy was out of position on defense almost every possession and gave up half of Nevada's 3s. No James or Naughton all second half. He must be some kind of practice superstar.

This game is just plain Shyatt ball. While we stay in games and when things go well we have a chance to pick up a "W", we also keep teams in games providing them the same chance. When you have an inside presence like Nance and Cooke you can play that way and win games by overwhelming opponents. But, there have been too many Sellers, Haldersons, Barnes and 3rd year players like Herndon (the best of the rest of the "bigs") that weaken the inside game. Herndon plays 23 minutes and gets only 2 rebounds!!! Dalton averages as many rebounds and usually gets substantially less minutes per game than Herndon. Herndon was eaten up by true freshman Oliver. Who is in charge of the "big" man scouting and recruiting - Jeremy?

Even though we won at the Pit, I would not be shocked to see UNM come to the AA and walk out with a "W" if our shots are not falling and UNM gets hot. Fortunately the MWC is way down this year. Fortunately we caught UNLV in a tailspin. Nevada won 9 games all of last year and sweeps us this year. UW is 8-10 versus D1 opponents. It is just rough to lose and try to maintain a positive perspective.

We have to accept we are a young team this year. We will be young next year and losing Adams with no bona fide equal to replace him will put more pressure on the current group to really bring their game up a notch or it will be a similar outcome next year. Adams IS THE REASON why this team is even competitive this year.

What upsets this fan is that UW continues to play losing ball in MWC play. 42-45 under Shyatt the past 5 years. It will be tough to exceed .500 this year and next year looks questionable as well unless huge development strides occur. There is a reason why the fans no longer flock to the AA and we average under 5,000 per game.

Dalton, to my utter surprise, has been playing rather well. It would be excellent if he could redshirt and gain 30 lbs. He'd be a really good player with some more weight. He's got great instincts and a knack for rebounding.
