Yeah, this shouldn't be allowed to happen. How can they be a state college if they don't grant bachelor's degrees? If University of Denver, a private school could block Metro State from rebranding as Denver State University, UW should be able to block this. But, with the Freedumb Caucus dumbasses at the wheel, they'll probably do it to inflict harm. That's what they like to do, hurt people.
LCCC is trying to fool people into thinking they're something they're not with the name change. Just go with Cheyenne College. There, all your ginned up concerns about "confusion" solved. You're welcome.

It’s brand forever diluted.
University of Wyoming was always associated with the State of Wyoming. Wyoming State College dilutes that longstanding brand. It will absolutely add confusion for those out of state who aren’t as closely connected to the University as us. Over time, it will become like a North Dakota/North Dakota State or South Dakota/South Dakota State to the outside world.

They already offer bachelors degrees and plan to add significantly more 4 year programs. It’s direct competition no matter how they try to spin it.

Those aren't real bachelors, man, a BAS in applied management? I could've done that drunk in middle school. those are votech degrees, and they know it. Seriously, sociology, anthropology, and history degrees are more technical than those.

This should be stopped. First, Wyoming State needs to come from the state legislature not from a CC president. Second, if Wyoming ever needs a second 4 year state university it needs to be somewhere outside of the southeast corner of the state. We don't need Wyoming State 45 minutes away from the University of Wyoming. This goes through, I've had enough of Cheyenne. Time to form the great state of Absaroka.

If there ever was going to be a Wyoming State, Casper or Sheridan made a hell of a lot more sense.
I suspect that there is no stopping this outside the legislature getting involved. The LCCC President doesn’t announce this without knowing full well how its Board is going to vote.

Exactly. Sheridan would make for a great college town and is far more attractive to out of state students, and Casper makes much more sense as far as central location. Though I don't think we are at the point of needing another state funded 4 year university. I already wrote to my state senator and rep. I encourage everybody to do the same, and encourage your neighbors as well. Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I'm actually fully supportive of the name change and I hope it makes everyone look at the salaries and administrative bloat at UW. One of the reasons UW always gives is that it's expensive being the only 4 year university in the state. Not anymore. Pikes Peak College, UVU went through similar transitions.

Salaries at UW are below market rate. Seriously. Northern Colorado pays the same, and all 3 of Colorado's main universities are well above. I'm sure they're above Black Hills State, but if that's what you want to be a peer institution...

Guess I shouldn't focus on the salaries as much as this thinking that whenever UW shows up at the legislature and asks for money that somehow this is the only educational option in the state; it's sort of a UW / Wyoming Legislature complex; it's really not the only educational option and anything the helps move the needle away from it is a positive because there are other educational institutions in the state.
It's just a name. I'm not convinced this really changes much in terms of students enrollment trends at either school.
More and more students, and their parents, are starting to look at the value proposition of different universities/colleges. As such, it's not a surprise that we are seeing more students take the community college route for the first couple years of their education - it's a lot cheaper and often a lot closer to home allowing for reduced room and board costs.
UW is still a great value for in-state students. The only problem with that is that the number of graduating high school students in Wyoming has been stagnant for decades. That leaves UW looking to increase out-of-state student enrollment if they want to increase overall enrollment. Unfortunately, out-of-state tuition has ballooned at UW, especially over the last 5-6 years. It now sits at $22k/year for out-of-state students.
My daughter is a senior in high school this year. She is a fairly high achieving student - her GPA and SAT are both above the 95th percentile nationally. She has cast a very wide net in terms of universities she is applying to. It's still early in the application season, and we have only heard back from two schools - UW and Baylor. Based on initial financial aid packages offered, it is going to be cheaper for her to attend Baylor, a private university with a $68k/year price tag, because they are offering her way more in total scholarship money.
We are visiting UW in September. She is very interested in the school. She likes small town life and she has loved Wyoming in all of our prior visits. But I'll be damned if I'm going to pay more for her to attend UW when there are a lot more competitive universities she can get an education at for less.
