Notes and Quotes: Bohl emphasizes pressure defense, power offense

Bohl said again on Friday that he was impressed with his team's power running game in practice. It's still developing, of course, but he stressed the need to work on it every day and be committed to the run.

“It’s kind of like sausage. It doesn’t look real good when you’re making it, but it sure tastes good when you’re done," Bohl said. "That’s part of the running game, though. Everybody says they want to run the football, but you have to spend time and grind it out. We’re in the process of doing that.”

Bohl talks practice and upcoming scrimmage

Bohl said all four of UW’s quarterbacks will likely get equal reps in the scrimmage. Sophomore Tom Thornton didn’t play in last week’s scrimmage with a sore hand, but will be good to go Saturday.

Bohl said earlier in the week that redshirt senior Colby Kirkegaard and senior Sam Stratton distanced themselves among the quarterbacks after last week’s scrimmage. However, both he and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brent Vigen said nothing is set in stone and there is a long way to go at that spot before the first game Aug. 30 against Montana.

I think the "Shedding the block" exercise may be one of the most important. IMO, that was one of our biggest weaknesses the last few years. Better conditioning will probably help a great deal with getting off blocks though.

Very true. At times, the guys on the d-line might get into the backfield or off their block, but for the most part they could not do anything even against FCS opponents.

YOUNG STUD

After years spent playing older competition, Wyoming's Fort ready to turn tables

Cortland Fort wasn't difficult to spot.

The running back's 155 pounds spread thinly over a 6-foot frame, he ran. He darted around massive defensive tackles and muscular, gliding linebackers. The Etiwanda (Calif.) High School freshman scampered into the open field, the only place he felt momentarily safe.

"Ran" might not be the right word. There was too much panic, like a gang of cats stalking an overwhelmed mouse.

In 2011, Blair Burns earned national recognition for his play on the football field.

Now a senior, the University of Wyoming cornerback hopes to get back to that form of nearly three years ago.

Burns was named a First Team Freshman All-American by CBSSports.com and the Football Writers Association of America, and an honorable mention Freshman All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com. He also was an honorable mention All-Mountain West pick.
