Wyoming defense controls first spring scrimmage

Steve Stanard wanted to see if his defense could take a punch.

In the first drive of Wyoming's scrimmage on Saturday, redshirt sophomore running back D.J. May took a hand off and broke away for a 46-yard run to carry the offense into the red zone. Having absorbed an early blow, the defense could either punch back, or lay down and allow the Cowboys' offense to trample them.

Wyoming's first-year defensive coordinator was not disappointed with the result.

Defense is loaded with experience, especially up front on the line. Our offense though, is going to be a work in progress for the next couple of years it looks like.

What's wrong with wick? He better step his game up and fast, doesn't look like the coaches care about what you did last year. He still had to prove himself

Sam Stratton finds himself in the same position he was in back in 2010 when he first arrived at the University of Wyoming.

Playing quarterback.

Stratton was a high school quarterback at Chatfield High in Littleton, Colo. He redshirted his first season and his plan was to compete for playing time — and to ultimately be the starter — when he signed with the Cowboys.

4 carries is an extremely small sample size. Don't read too much into that.

I'm trying to figure out what a 10 yard 'team punt' looks like...

Wish they let the media in. I wonder if he was running laterally or did the o-line just sucked. Or maybe a mixture of both.

Not to mention, remove each other runner's long run, and their averages will be pretty much the same as Wick's. Means they just got lucky and found a hole once, which I'm imagining is tough with the current state of our offensive line from the sounds of it.

Except for Nevermann, the team's Swede, I guess... looks like he must've hit at least another decent one to get to his average.

That's why I wish we had film. Maybe the only runs that were successful were the one's that went north and south. Looking at NDSU highlights the RBs rarely got lateral. I just home our RB's are able to break old habits
 
The problem with the RBs, is that under DC, they were most likely told to try and get the corner and THEN turn up field. Wick was able to find small gaps in the line and exploit them. Wick didn't go East-West as much as our other 2 RBs, and he went more North-South. But he still was probably taught to go East-West first.
 
Anyone a little worried about Kirkegaard possibly starting? Seems like wishful thinking to expect the offense to be good with him at the helm.

From the sounds of things, I'd say getting the o-line up to snuff is a bit more worrisome. So long as Capt. Kirk keeps the ball safe and hits the open guy, I'm fine with him possibly starting. Remember, the pro system is not as QB centric as the spread, by quite a bit.
 
I seriously doubt Wick is the East& West culprit. Thats not his game. I dont look much into the stats unless a back gets over 10+ carries. Since Wick probably had the first couple reps going against our starting Defense, I can imagine the defense was playing run all the way. May probably got a great block and had a nice run. The other backs went against the twos and threes, Big difference. Im not worried about Wick I'm worried about the O line.

Let me reiterate; Wick, who is probably our most "North-South" back was taught for 2 years to go East-West before going up the field. The other backs (our next most experienced being May who sat out last year) have also been ingrained with the East-West mentality. Wick did do a lot of North-South running last year, whereas the other backs who had been in the system longer were doing more East-West running. Meaning that the RBs are still getting the whole East-West running out of their system.

In other words, you're preaching to the choir.

Unfortunately we dont have film or highlights, so everything is speculation up to this point. Wick is a beast and an even bigger one this year. The Oline just has to learn to block a certain player as opposed to an area with our previous spread offense. Everything will be fine. It was an obvious controlled scrimmage and im glad our front four on defense is stepping up and the linebackers are making most of the tackles. Im also upbeat about Kirk. This kid has been blasted so many times on this board its refreshing to see him play better.
 
I agree, Kirk was wrong type of QB in last system. As a senior, who knows, maybe he can flourish
 
Wick does not run East-West. He pushes piles upfield.
Alvester ran East-West. Wick runs North. Not North-South. North.
