Wyoming gets Northern Iowa in Seattle

Nance and the UNI forward have very similar numbers...but Nance did play tentative to begin the season (coming back from a massive injury early) and missed two games and played while still feeling fatigued from mono in at least two games. And their numbers are almost identical. I think some people are underestimating Nance because of the numbers.

You can't really play the "what if" game in college sports...but. If Nance hadn't gotten sick or started the season with more confidence in his knee, his numbers would have potentially been much better.

+1

My favorite thing about defensive minded basketball is that the opposing team always always always says " X had an off game "

They will never admit that the off game was the defense that shut them down.

1-10 Derrick Marks finished with 16 points
3-13 Derrick Marks, the Mountain West player of the year, led the Broncos with 17

It's not just by chance the top guy didn't have 30 points and people will never admit to it. Boise fans in Vegas said " Marks & Duncan just weren't on " How about Marks and Duncan got shut down.

By the time we play UNI, they will have had 2 weeks off.
That seems like a LONG time in college basketball.
And they are traveling 2 time zones, then playing a morning game for their game after such a long wait. That seems like good news to me.

God I am stoked for this game! Can't wait to head up to Seattle!

I watched some footage of Tuttle, and he looks pretty similar to Nance. He might have a strength advantage, but Nance will have a definite athleticism advantage.

The key will be how all the complementary players perform. UNI seems to spread out their scoring across more guys, as the next highest scorer behind Tuttle averaged just 7.7 points per game (Adams, Grabau and Cooke all averaged more). Depth also can be diminished come tournament time because of all the extra TV timeouts. Players have more time to rest on the bench, which, if used correctly, can benefit the teams that have a shorter bench.

It might come down to which Josh Adams shows up. We saw in the first half against Boise how he can take over. But there are also stretches where he disappears.

Good point on the extra timeouts. I do not think Wyo will have any depth issues at this point. They went those 3 games in 3 nights. They have been practicing and resting up. Between timeouts, extra TV timeouts, our slow pace, and just adrenaline, the Pokes won't get worn down by anyone they play. The team has made it this far, and peaking right now, they might get beat, but not because of depth.

Depth is pretty much irrelevant in tournament play, especially when you play as slowly as these two teams and especially when you foul as infrequently. So UNI goes ten deep? That just means they have a bunch of indistinguishable, interchangeable parts. We still have the two best players in this game who are basically never in foul trouble. We have a solid eight man rotation of players who know their roles and are altitude trained unlike any other squad in the tournament. We start four seniors and a junior. Depth schmepth.

Hello Wyonation,

Just wanted to stop by and say good luck before the madness begins. This has been a looong week for both fan bases obviously, but I'm looking forward to a good competitive game on Friday. I believe Wyoming is much better than their seed indicates and provides UNI with a unique matchup. I also think this was the intention of the committee, in order to eliminate two teams capable of doing a lot of damage to some blue-bloods and power 5 teams at struggle with well-coached, defensive minded teams.

Conspiracy theories aside, I'm excited to see Nance Jr. and Adams play to see how they stack up with Tuttle and some of Wichita States All-Americans, Ron Baker and Fred Van Vleet. They have been really exciting players to watch here past few years and from all accounts I've studied, your boys will provide us with some entertainment as well.

If you have any questions about the Panthers that sivert hasn't already answered, please feel free to ask. I'll probably stick around this post since it seems to have avoided some of the name-calling and silliness.

I totally agree with you on this point and it really pisses me off cause this happens every tourney. They always stack 2 teams that are more in the have not category to take each other out. I mean the last time we made the tourney it was like that when we were facing more of an upstart Gonzaga at the time. Happens over and over though. It sucks when UNI and WYO have some of their best teams in years only to have to knock one of the "lessers" out early.

I like this guy and has everyone been taking notice of all these classy fans stopping by with valid points? I can't wish you guys too much luck unfortunately but I'm sure we're gonna be in for an intense game. Can't wait to see UNI play for the first time this year and how we match up!

Thank you, no one talks about this! Same for Dayton and Boise St, both teams are very capable of making noise and they essentially gave Boise a road game. I'm fairly ignorant of a portion of teams in the tourney outside of the "big" names and such, but I would bet you could pick out several more instances, especially within the 5-12, 6-11 and 7-10 games. Those seem to be the "let's underseed a 'mid-major' and overseed a mediocre P5 team" or throw in the hot playing conference champion with a tough match up and try to bounce them early (Buffalo-West Virginia; NDSU-St Louis last year)

I just listened to their coach Jacobson talk on Seattle radio. They have sports radio out here talk to coaches of smaller schools in the NCAA tournament and teams that will be playing in Seattle each year and they had Jacobson on just about 15 minutes ago. He is a class act.

If they beat us I will definitely root for them. I have watched some of Seth Tuttle interviews as well and he is down to earth and a lot like Larry Nance Jr. a great ambassador for their program . He isn't one of these cocky kids you see from some of these big schools.

I would say N. Iowa and Wyoming are more alike then they are different. Obviously the fans get worked up and like talking smack to each other but the smaller schools should stick together more so then talk down to each other with the way the big schools try to take over everything now.

Overall I think N. Iowa and their coach and players are a class act and do it how it should be done. It is too bad Wyoming has to play them the first week , it would be much better if we could both play someone else and both make it to the sweet sixteen.

I am sure we will meet some of their fans in Seattle and I am sure Iowa people are a lot more like Wyoming then they are like Seattle or California people. Probably be good if we stop the name calling on each other and personal attacks. We both love our schools so if we win or lose lets try and do it with some class. I need to make sure I practice what I preach as well  Just my two cents :twocents:

The good thing is that even though there are flaws in this set up like this all schools still get their crack the national championship. I don't like football much anyway but the setup were all the big money, big exposure programs control everything and undefeated/strong non major teams get shafted on the regular sucks. UNI and Wyoming will it least have their fates in their hands to go after this whole thing...granted we could easily get screwed by refs. They tend to call the tourney pretty tight, with a certain style, but teams don't get hosed as bad as some home games with certain schools from what I've seen.

Iowans are to Minnesotans as Greenies are to Wyomingites

Yep, the college football playoff is just another opportunity for the NCAA to make it seem like they want to level the playing field when in reality they just want to line their pockets. They'll expand to 8 teams in order to "prevent" more situations like TCU/Baylor this year when in reality it means more media attention, more advertising revenue and more $$$. Can't completely blame them except that it's a non-profit organization that is anything but.

Not that I am advocating for a 32 or 64 team football playoff. Just that the NCAA not be a bunch of money-grubbing sleaze-balls.

Except it's not like they keep all that money. You do realize that a LOT of that money gets redistributed back to various schools to reimburse for travel, competition, etc.

Yeah but only "the haves" get to even have a chance at the national title. It's pretty gross really, not to mention all the other dirty business that those programs have going on just to be in that position anyway most the time. I really am not into money driven things period. I'm from Wyoming/Montana and I'm more of a natural man I suppose...I hate the way most the "big" things in this world get built up into because it just seems very corrupt most of the time.

Of course not, but they take home a large chunk of the profit and it's set up so that it's redistributed to the same schools. Wyoming could go undefeated next year and I guarantee they won't get a whiff of it. I think that's the bigger issue I was referencing. It's going to be a P5 playoff system for as long as they can keep it that way. And that money is certainly not always used simply on operating costs...depending on your opinion of where "recruiting" expenses fall into that equation and what exactly "recruitment" entails.

Actually, it's redistributed to every team in Division 1, 2, and 3 that makes the post season. The NCAA pays for all travel, room and board for all postseason tournaments. So you have 36 NCAA-sanctioned sports, and most of those play at all 3 levels. You've typically got 30-60 teams traveling for each sport at each level. Throw in the fact that some of these sports travel 50-70 people, that's a lot of coin getting dished out. While some schools in D-1 do get a lot of money, there are plenty of small schools in D-2 and D-3 that are getting money too.

Strong game by your men. Especially, you made a good run in the middle of the second half.

Nance showed what he can do in the second half. And her certainly made things tough for Tuttle. I saw multiple times that Adams pushed Morgan and Waspun to the limit of their defensive ability. When our defender got beat, we were fortunate have to help in that direction. I get why you're high on him.

Not much to say; I'm trying to not gloat. Good game.
