The more I look at this match up we can control it down low with Nance and Cooke. A lot of it will come down to if we can not turn the ball over. That will be a HUGE key in this game.

They have multiple good shooters. So have to defend the 3 like against CSU and Boise St. The more I look at this match up though the more I am starting to like it. We are more athletic than them for sure but they play very very disciplined basketball.
I agree that turnovers are a big key, and 3 point defense, but I'm not convinced we will control it down low, Seth Tuttle is a stud and will be fun to watch Nance vs him.

I agree Seth is a stud but Nance is more athletic. Nance is a better big man than Tuttle. Cooke is also a lot more athletic than anything they have down low. The thing they do well is defend and shoot the 3 and play disciplined.

San Diego St. was more of a threat down low overall then N. Iowa is. San DIego St. had the length to match up with Nance and Cooke where Northern Iowa doesn't. N. Iowa is a poor mans San Diego St. on defense with not as much athleticism but has better shooters than the Aztecs on offense.

Will be interesting to see what they do. Honestly looking at it these teams are almost mirror images of one another in the style of play they have.

It'll definitely be interesting. Adams could be really big again too.

Surprised to hear so many people saying they like the draw. Northern Iowa is an excellent basketball team. This will easily be the best basketball team we have played this year. Would have much rather of been matched up with Arkansas or West Virginia as far as 5 seeds go.

On a side note, Utah is going to be one hell of a dangerous 5 seed in my opinion.

I think we are saying, GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES, the matchup is fine. By NO means am I saying we are GOING to win... Similar to that of vs SDSU. I was fearful of a loss, but hoping for a win. This is what makes March so awesome.

I'm not going to lie - I was hoping CSU would beat SDSU in the tourney because I was worried we would lose to them a third time. I thought our chances were better going for win #3 against CSU. I also didn't like the idea of facing UNLV on their home court.

I hope this week - the coaches come up with a rock solid game plan. I hope the players want to go to the next level.

Hello from Cedar Falls! We will see you Friday - I'm interested in watching some highlights, especially of Nance. Got any youtube links?

Here's the UNI forum, if anyone's interested:

Unfortunately, there aren't really any highlight videos of just Nance. However, there are a lot of game highlights you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy9b8FWD1N2TsU2jkij_O3Q" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Yes! Congratulations to you, also.
This will be an interesting game. Here's a few data: http://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basketball/matchup/cowboys-panthers-2015-03-20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This will be a grinder. We are one of the few teams in the country who average fewer possessions per game than you.
I didn't expect to find Dunk Town videos and what looks like running offense. Do you expect Nance to have a bigger game making shots or defending Tuttle?

Highlight never seem to show defense - unless it's a dramatic blocked shot. 35 seconds of helping and rotating just doesn't make a "highlight." UNI defense means the opponent walks away feeling that they just didn't play a good game and can't quite see why they couldn't score.

I'm hoping for a win, of course, so I guess I'll predict UNI wins 60-54.

I think Nance will have a bigger game on the defensive end, and Josh Adams will be key to the offense. I don't know a whole lot about UNI other than that they are another slow paced, defensive team that likes to shoot the 3 so I'll say 55-50 UW

Yeah you guys play even a slower possession game then we do but I am wondering if some of that might be skewed somewhat because of the teams you play and the teams we play. I watched a few of your games and you guys seem to shoot the ball sooner most of the time than we do actually in your half court offense.

Wyoming actually takes the shot clock down to about 10 seconds before they shoot most of the time. The reason for the dunks and Dunktown video's is because we have a lot of athletic guys on our team that can dunk the ball. They dunk a lot on half court sets and then they do push the ball when they have an opening for transition but that is the only time. We usually back it out and set up a half court game. We don't have anyone offensive rebound on our team. We make everyone get back on defense so the other team can't get into transition.

We play a slow pace and solid defense. UNI has more consistent 3 point shooters than Wyoming does. As far as Nance and Tuttle go it will be a good match up. Larry can play offense and defense. He was the Co- Defensive player of the year in the MWC. He missed 4 games and was still sick in about 2 or 3 others with mono and not 100% but he is back healthy now. Also our 6th man Alan Herndon was out with mono for a few games as well and he is finally back to 100% now. We would have had a better record and won a few more games if mono didn't hit our team. Luckily we are back to 100% now and won our conference tournament. Them being out really skewed our stats and our record .

Honestly this game will be a low scoring game most likely as both teams play a slower pace and are both disciplined and play defense. Neither team likes to turn the ball over. This will be a grinder. I think who ever turns the ball over less and makes free throws and can manufacture points the best will win this game. N. Iowa has had a great year and deserves all the respect in the world. I think this will be a tough match up for Wyoming but hope we can pull it out.

You forget the "Silent Assassin", Riley Grabau. He's 1st in free throw percentage (in the country) at 94% I think.

That scrub missed 2 in the last 2 games! :tickedoff:

I know, maybe he should spend some time with DC and learn how it is done. ;)

This is the glaring difference between the two teams. Both are disciplined, slow paced teams that prevent transition and move the ball well in their half court sets. The difference is that UNI is an excellent perimeter shooting team and the Pokes have struggled from beyond the arc.

I think the real key is just how healthy Larry Nance is. He is really battling, but you can tell he isn't there physically yet (which makes it even more incredible that we won the tourney, but that's a separate topic). There were several times during the tourney that he caught the ball moving toward the rim and instead and taking it hard to the rim and dunking (his normal operation), he had to gather himself and try a couple of pump fakes. He also settled for more perimeter jumpers that he normally does (and hit them at a much higher rate than he did during the regular season).

I think Friday is great for us as it gives him one extra day of rest, fluids, etc. He may not be 100%, but if he can get from 80% to 90%, he can win the matchup on the interior.
