WORLAND — State Farm Insurance has teamed up with the University of Wyoming to give the No. 1 fan of UW athletics a huge prize package. The list of nominees has been taken down to five and Worland’s Tom Roberts Sr. is in the running.
Roberts, whose name was submitted by his wife Betty, has been a member of the Cowboy Joe Club since 1988, and avidly participates in the group’s annual Worland golf tournament. He makes the five-hour trip to Laramie to see as many games as possible throughout the year, according to Betty.
Tom painted a spare bedroom in his home in Wyoming brown and gold colors, and decorated it with banners, posters and stickers. His golf cart sports the Wyoming colors as well. Betty said Tom hasn’t missed a Wyoming Shootout Worland Golf Tournament in 25 years.
“When Tom was a little boy, he can remember setting in front of the television watching a snowy picture, just listening to the announcers because they couldn’t get the channel,” Betty said. “He never misses a game on the radio if he’s not around the TV. When he goes hunting, the earphones and the radio get packed before his gun. Win or lose, he puts on his Wyoming shirt and supports them. He just loves them.”
Betty said from a closet full of shirts to the Pokes on his license plate, Tom is a true fan.
The list of nominees, including Keith Downey and Beth Jones of Laramie, Marci Shulp of Douglas, Keith Smith of Logan, Utah and Roberts, can be found by clicking on the red State Farm icon on the bottom left hand side of the WyomingAthletics.com website.
Interested parties can vote once a day through Feb. 27. The winner will be announced at the University of Wyoming vs. Utah basketball game in Laramie, March 1. The grand prize includes a trip for two to anywhere that Frontier Airlines flies in the continental United States, season tickets for all UW athletics for the 2008-09 seasons, autographed memorabilia, and much more. All finalists will receive a UW prize pack that includes autographed memorabilia.
