Leveraging the defense: Cowboys feel new scheme will improve performance

It is one of the more common things first-year University of Wyoming football coach Craig Bohl has said since he was hired in December.

“Leverage our defense.”

That means Bohl wants his defense to be the strength of both this season’s team and future teams.

The good news is nine defensive starters return from last season. The bad news is the defense struggled mightily in 2013.

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming's Wednesday practice

Another day, another morning practice.

Wyoming practiced in shorts and shoulder pads on Wednesday, stretching in the Indoor Practice Facility before heading out to Jonah Field after the first 15 minutes of practice.

Here are a few quick observations from the media's 30-minute access window.

Is it normal for NFL scouts to be at practice #3 of a team like Wyoming? Who could they possibly be scouting? Olive? Yarborough? Maybe Rufran or Claiborne? Did CDC's teams have scouts interested this early in a season?

Shit on Stanton, even though he was going to redshirt you still never want to see a kid get injured like that. Was hoping Sewell was starting to pick up. Kid has so much talent.

Wyoming sophomore Oscar Nevermann embracing move to linebacker

Oscar Nevermann has done a lot of moving.

Geographically, Nevermann -- a 6-foot-1, 213-pound sophomore -- moved across an ocean from his home in Stockholm, Sweden, to attend Wyoming in 2013.

And positionally, he has moved from wide receiver, to running back, and now to linebacker -- all in about a year.

Claiborne has more to play for in his last season with Cowboys

Tragedy has changed the way Jalen Claiborne is approaching his final season with the University of Wyoming football team.

A senior receiver, Claiborne learned in late June that one of his friends and high school teammates, Cortlyn Ware, died in a car accident in their hometown of Carthage, Texas.

Claiborne switched his jersey number from No. 1 to the No. 9 that Ware wore in high school, and he has dedicated this season to his friend. They helped Carthage High win three straight Class 3A state titles from 2008-10.

UW football fall camp – Day 4

Thursday marked the camp debut of sophomore long snapper Brendan Turelli. He got some handshakes and good-natured teasing from teammates. Turelli and senior kicker have been in Laramie but not part of camp as coach Craig Bohl wants to look at some players at other positions early in camp. Williams will be in camp soon, but is working on his own. A few other news and notes:

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming's Thursday practice

The emphasis was on special teams.

At least, in the first half hour. Wyoming was back at practice on Thursday morning, training in shorts and shoulder pads for the second consecutive day.

Here are a few quick observations from the Cowboys' fourth practice of the fall.
