Kirkegaard likely start at quarterback, but not taking anything for granted

Craig Bohl said it two weeks ago in Las Vegas at Mountain West football media day, and he said it again Monday at the University of Wyoming’s football media day.

Barring any unforeseen events, redshirt senior Colby Kirkegaard will be the starting quarterback when UW hosts Montana in its season-opener Aug. 30.

“Colby Kirkegaard is doing a good job, but he’s not where we want him to be,” said Bohl, in his first season at UW. “We will evaluate over the course of fall camp. But make no mistake — he’s done better than everyone else.

UW fall camp notes — Day 2

The start of Wyoming’s second practice of fall camp was much like its first on Monday.

The team was in helmets and shorts. They started in its indoor practice facility, but spent the majority of the practice outside in War Memorial Stadium.

The Cowboys did some drill work early on, and worked specifically on some special teams areas such as blocking punts. Here is some video of that:

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming football's Tuesday practice

The Wyoming football team was back at it on Tuesday, working in shorts and helmets in an 8:30 a.m. practice.

The media and general public is only allowed to watch the first 30 minutes of each practice. However, there were still a few interesting takeaways from the brief session.

Most of the half hour was spent on special teams, as the team broke into groups and ran through a number of different kick block, protection and return drills.

Here are a few observations from the Cowboys' second practice of fall camp.

Including this:

Bohl said that Wyoming's freshman defensive backs -- Chavez Pownell, Robert Priester, C.J. Jennings and Ryon'e Winters -- have stood out in the first two days.

"We have a little bit more speed in the secondary. We're not in pads right now, but I'm particularly pleased with some of the young freshmen -- with their athleticism," Bohl said. "That's a spot where typically younger guys have an opportunity to play earlier, because it's a skill position.

"There's some guys in that group that can really run. In our conference, speed is going to be paramount. So it's good to have some depth there.

"Now, they don't know where they're running to. But they're running fast."

Interesting to see that the coaches are letting Stuart Williams and Brandon Tuerelli do their own thing for now. I've never heard of not including the kicker until the end of camp, but it does make sense.

Wyoming QB Kirkegaard assumes role of likely starter in fall camp

Kirkegaard's improved grasp of offensive coordinator Brent Vigen's west coast scheme has been apparent to his teammates.

“Colby is looking really good right now. He looks a lot more confident. He knows what he’s doing," junior running back Shaun Wick said. "Coming into spring, he was thinking, ‘What’s the play again? What’s the progression’

"But right now, he’s like a machine. He gets under center and he knows the cadence. He’s got it down. I’m really excited for him this season.”
