Wyoming AFA Game Thread

Air Force is a much better team this year than last year, I guarantee that!

My biggest worry going forward...Jones in coverage against Oregon :o

Oregon game is a worst-case scenario. Even on their bad day, they are lots better than us. Their D is going to dismantle us. They have speed everywhere. Praying they have a bit of a letdown game otherwise, we might have 500+ yards put on us and not even generate a 100 yards from our O.

I'm just hoping to escape both Oregon and MSU injury free.

Before everybody gets too excited, lets put things in perspective:

1) Last week 17 points offense. This week 17 points: NO OFFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT.
2) Last week 12 points allowed. This week 13 allowed: DEFENSE GOING BACKWARD.

We may get boat raced. Like.. Bohl might fight the urge to flip off the Oregon sideline.

I can't agree with this, The defense didn't go backwards the secondary has been a worry the entire time and the offense looked better against Air Force, Kirk didn't make any drastic mistakes and there were no turnovers. You can't just look at the score and numbers and make blanket statements that they are going backwards and not improving.

No doubt about it. How many times in the past would Air Force put up 250-300 rushing yards on us? I for one am very impressed with this new defense. Certainly there needs to be improvement in the defensive backfield, but the front 7 can be completely dominate. Hopefully the offense will eventually be able to consistently put longer drives together where the defense can sit on the sidelines and get some rest to stay fresh. On a side note, its almost impossible to get a running game going when there are 7-9 defensive players in the box.

I hope you knew that was a joke, right?

Our front 7 look a million times better than last year, and considering they were all here last year, that's saying something.

Our DBs though still have a lot to improve on. Like open field tackling.

Honestly we can't continue at this pace.
Why not?

Who not? please don't tell me you are being serious. This team isn't a play from behind team. Going down by 3 is one thing and the defense has really won these last two games against some of the weakest teams at the FBS level.

=================

Define "pace". Of course the goal isn't to fall behind. But everyone should get use to this style - the first halves will be close and slower starting. Leads may be small or non-existent at halftime because both teams are still fresh, and no one worn down. This will be the case even when Bohl improves the talent. Even though the running game never materialized (just don't have the talent on the O-line), AFA defense did fatigue enough, had some cramps, and their pass rush weakened. That is the style and the pace everyone will see going forward.

And repeated 3 and outs...

Let's face it there will be games where the defense will give up a lot of points. Can we score fast enough to get back in these games? Now Colby did have a nice drive, I'll give him that. Can we get away with waiting for him to feel comfortable? When a team stacks nine or ten in the box throwing the ball is going to be critical. We cannot wait until the Qb finds his confidence. These are man coverage situations with no safety help and no backers dropping in the flats. It's a simple read and throw that 98% of FBS Qbs can make. Cannot simply go 3 and out on these situations.

Not much option for Bohl at QB at this point. Thornton and Young would be a drop off from Colby. Fort and Smith are redshirting. Next year will be interesting with Cam, Fort, Smith in the mix competing with Thornton and Young.

We will have to be patient with Colby for this year but he is getting better every game. That last drive showed he has a lot of heart and he can make the throws. This season could get very interesting as the season goes on.

Of course it's not a play-from-behind team. But how many teams are? How many teams are better when playing from behind versus playing with the lead?

I don't care who it's been lined up on the other sidelines...we've won two games on 4Q GW drives. That is a huge confidence boost for this team going into the rest of the season and beyond.

Have these two wins been perfect? Of course not. But I don't think perfection should be expected right away.

I'm sure you'll be one of the first people here to call for Bohl's firing if we lose big to Oregon and/or Michigan State, and that's disappointing. This is a process that will take time. The rebuilding job isn't over yet, and to expect otherwise is ridiculous.

I think the culture change Bohl is instilling in the program is such a shock to some fans. They become accustomed to the flashy offense which lacks substance like has been seen in Wyoming over the years that they forget what it's like to build a team designed for clock management, field position management, and staying in the game.

Will every game be close? Of course not. But was every game close under the previous system? Of course not.

Of course Fort and Smith aren't just red shirting for kicks, if they were better than Colby they'd be starting I'm sure.

yes we still need to learn how to tackle in the open field, but thru 2 games I like what i see so far, now on to Autzen for the trek this weekend, cover 43 pts, yeah I think so

I'm not so sure - Coach Bohl might just value experience and maturity more than talent (up to a point).
