Notes and Quotes: Wyoming enjoys first conference bye

DEFENSIVE MINDSET

It's no secret where Shyatt's priorities lie.

Wyoming's leader is a defensive coach, and that mindset has been imprinted on his team. The Cowboys allow just 53.3 points per game, which ranks fourth nationally and second in the Mountain West.

Shyatt elaborated on what he expects from his players on the defensive end on Monday.

“I’m a little demented when it comes to [defense], and our guys know that. They make fun of it," Shyatt said. "I always want our players to be worried, have an edge, be concerned on D. Every guy, every possession, we need to be concerned about the first eight seconds and defensive rebounding.

"That is where you should be putting the pressure on -- how fast you sprint back to D, how much you care about team defense and how you finish defensive possessions.”

Riley Grabau free throw shooting (WyoSports)

Wyoming's Larry Nance Jr. grows beyond a disease's constraints

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Watch Larry Nance Jr. amble around the basketball court and it looks as if success was preordained.

The Wyoming senior not only possesses strong bloodlines but also shares the name of his father, Larry Nance Sr., the former 13-year-NBA veteran who dazzled fans with almost freakish athletic ability. The 6-foot-8 Nance Jr. displays that attribute as well as a striking number of his dad's on-court mannerisms.

But what few outside this high-elevation campus know is that the preseason Mountain West Conference player of the year can compete at the college level only because of a medical diagnosis during his sophomore year of high school that changed his life.

More minutes coming for Aka Gorski?

“It’s hard to get guys in during league play where every possession is so important,” Shyatt said. “Every time (Aka Gorski) is on the floor, (junior guard) Josh Adams or (senior guard) Charles Hankerson are off it, or Hankerson or (redshirt sophomore guard) Jason McManamen, and those guys have played pretty good basketball.

“It’s about managing that, and our guys have had pretty good attitudes about it.”

12 seed? Does that mean we are actually favored to win?

Pretty sure he only has us in because we are in first place right now.
Correct, but the fact that we're in as a 12-seed is somewhat encouraging.

How do you figure? The absolute worst we would be (with an auto bid) is #13 because 14-16 are "reserved" for auto bids for the low-level conferences. Him putting us at 12 is basically saying the only way we get in is by winning the tourney.

You are missing the subtle joke here... the 12 seed is notorious for beating the 5 seed. I think last year the 12 seed went 3-1 against the 5 seed in the first round of the tourney. It seems like every single season the upset stories start with the 12 seeds winning more than they lose.

Cowboys’ guards kept team focused Saturday (WyoSports.net)

There was a lot to reflect on following the University of Wyoming’s 70-65 triple-overtime win at Fresno State last Saturday.

But when asked about it Monday, coach Larry Shyatt didn’t point out shots made by senior forward Larry Nance Jr. and senior guard Charles Hankerson Jr. in that third overtime to secure the victory. Instead, he mentioned what he saw from a couple of his players in the huddle during timeouts and breaks in the action.

More national spotlight for Nance and the Pokes:

Nance leads Wyoming into national spotlight almost a year after torn right ACL (The Daily Orange)

After Syracuse forward Rakeem Christmas scored 35 points in a win over Wake Forest on Tuesday, Boeheim was asked why he doesn’t think his senior gets much national attention. The head coach asked the reporter, “Do you know who the best player on Wyoming is?”

The reporter responded “no” and Boeheim retorted, “Exactly, he averages 18 and 12,” to show that star players on teams out of the national spotlight don’t get the credit they deserve.

And while Boeheim slightly exaggerated Nance’s numbers, learning about the moment gave him chills.

“I actually had no idea that happened,” Nance said, laughing. “Jim Boeheim is obviously one of the greatest coaches to ever coach the game and the fact that he even knows my name is really cool. I mean if I could, I would thank him.”

Gagliardi, in his column, asked if the Poke bench should be used more (presumably asking the readers). My answer is yes -- but not necessarily the way Shyatt is mostly doing it. I think that when bench players go in, they should not replace starters in wholesale fashion, but individually, to work with four other starters.

I think Shyatt does what you suggest most of the time. The only time I see wholesale changes are when the Pokes have a comfortable lead. I would like to see Gorski more (and we will) to make a nice 9 man rotation with Herndon, McM, Gorski, and Lieberman coming in to spell the other guys or to provide a spark.

I think a nine man rotation is too much. Eight man is better for us with Herndon, McM and Gorski off the bench. My only concern would be do we have enough ball handling if/when Grabeu and Adams sit.

Hopefully you don't set both at once. That is where Lieberman comes in because he has good handles and a good assist to TO ratio.

Shyatt doesn't seem to have a set rotation except for Herndon and McM. It is nice to be able to rest the starters, because that hasn't been a luxury we've had the past few years.

Agreed. It would have to be a real extreme event (both in foul trouble or an injury) for neither to be on the floor when the game outcome is in doubt. Just looking back at the lineup data from KenPom for the last 5 games (roughly the MWC season to date) and the Pokes have played zero minutes without one of them on the floor.

It will be interesting to see how much Gorski plays. If he does start to see extended minutes they will likely be at the expense of McManamen.

Wyoming guard Adams grows stronger in second half

"His motor is nonstop from start to finish, and perhaps because he’s trained so well at elevation," Shyatt said. "He’s somewhat more effective when other players slow down."

“It's mostly just taking what opens up," Adams said. "It’s really hard for some teams to stay focused all the way through, so there’s going to be breakdowns. I just find a good way to exploit those breakdowns."

Who else thinks that Josh is about to break open BIG time real soon?
He showed it last season when he became the go-to guy when Nance went down.
He has shown it at times this year.
It's about to come through big time.
Nance is doing his part as the best player in the league to make us a winning team. Our #3 through #6 guys are doing their job to keep us winning some of those hard games. Now, our #2 guy is about to blow the doors wide open to carry this team in certain stretches and help Wyo get a MWC title, along with 1st team MWC.

Look at every championship/high level team in basketball. There isn't 1 star. There is 2.
MJ-Pippen
Wade-LeBron
Kobe-Shaq
Stockton-Malone
Kendall Williams-Alex Kirk
Jamaal Franklin-Khawi Leonard

Adams has got to play at nearly the same level as Nance from here on out. We know he is capable of it, and he does too, but now is the time for a real Batman and Robin situation, not a Batman OR Robin.

Agree, Beaver. Our offense should be Larry dominating down low, Josh driving the ball finishing and creating, and Hank and Grabeu launching deadly three pointers, in that order.
