U-T SanDiego: Wyoming, not SDSU, ranked in Top 25

“(Coach) Larry Shyatt has done a great job,” SDSU coach Steve Fisher said. “He’s got a senior-driven team and they’re good. They’re led by Larry Nance Jr., arguably the No. 1 player in our league – maybe not arguably. They’re good anywhere, especially at home.

“(With Wyoming) having won at Colorado State, having beat Vegas, being 4-0, we’ll probably have some teams cheering for us for a change.”

INSEPARABLE
Wyoming's Cooke, Hankerson stick together in senior seasons

Derek Cooke Jr. and Charles Hankerson Jr. have been connected since the day they met, and possibly before.

Cooke insists that in a past life, he and Hankerson were blood brothers. Family. That's the only way to explain a bond that defies both logic and time.

Of course, the records show only that in 2012, two basketball players transferred to Wyoming, and in doing so agreed to share an apartment with someone they had never seen or spoken with in their entire lives.

More Story: Wyoming's Cooke, Hankerson stick together

Cooke has a million comparisons, and most of them work.

“Right foot, left foot. One-two punch. Kobe and Shaq. That’s us," he says. "Starsky-Hutch. Batman-Robin. That’s who we are.”

Under interrogation, though, the logic begins to crack. Which one is Batman, and which is Robin?

"He's more of a Batman," Cooke concedes, prodding Hankerson.

"What?!" Hankerson shouts. "No!"

Aztecs face slow Pokes
Wyoming spurns conventional wisdom and finds success slowing it down

“They make you guard side to side. They make it hard for you to keep the ball on one side. They’ll grind you up. We can’t shoot it in five seconds and have to play defense for 30 seconds every time.”

That might seem easier on the lungs, not having to race up and down the court at 7,222 feet. Aztecs senior Aqeel Quinn is not so sure.

“It’s just as hard,” Quinn said. “When somebody wants to run clock, nobody really wants to play defense for the whole 35-second shot clock. It kind of messes with your mind a little bit. You have to be mentally strong. When it gets under 15, you have to be focused in and play defense.”

Shyatt put it like this: “I gotta tell you, you’ve got to use a lot of energy – mental energy and physical energy – when you play our guys certain nights if they’re playing the right way.”

This game is like looking in the mirror,” he (Nance) said. “They’re a solid defensive team with an older, experienced coach. We have a tremendous amount of respect for them, as they should for us. It’s definitely going to be a battle that should be a close-fought one.”

“(The defensive) part of this team is even better than the first three we’ve played,” UW coach Larry Shyatt said. “The paperwork speaks for itself. You don’t need to look at the video. Teams that defend the first eight and last eight seconds (on each possession) put themselves in position to win. That’s what you see and feel when you watch San Diego State play basketball.”

FILM ROOM: Adams taking offensive game beyond the arc

“He did put a great deal of work in this summer, and it wasn’t just jump shooting. It was free throw shooting. It was also ball handling, because he knew he was going to take over the point guard responsibilities 50 percent of the time," Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt said. "It was time well spent. I like the improvements he made, and I actually see down the road a high level in terms of where he could go being that lead guard.”
