Wyoming could be shorthanded for final nonconference game (WyoSports.net)

Tonight’s final nonconference game for the University of Wyoming men’s basketball team isn’t as much about the opponent, but who will be available to play for the Cowboys.

Coach Larry Shyatt said Monday that senior starting guards Riley Grabau (hamstring) and Charles Hankerson Jr. (foot), along with redshirt freshman backup forward Alan Herndon (acid reflux), are questionable for tonight’s game at Montana State, which tips off at 7 at Worthington Arena in Bozeman, Montana.

Migraines, back issues, and acid reflux? What is going on with Herndon? Are they just throwing out random issues to mask a centralized, serious problem? I'm concerned a bit....And any truth to the rumors Grabau is looking to red shirt due to a torn ACL?

MSU men, Wyoming set to clash once again

“This is just like a conference game, so it’s setting us up perfect for after break,” Robison said. “We scouted them well and we were right there [on the road], so hopefully we can get a little home court advantage and come out with a ‘W.’”

Cowboys end nonconference portion of schedule with win at Montana St.

Senior forward Larry Nance Jr. scored a season-high 31 points, and senior forward Derek Cooke Jr. added 13 points and 11 rebounds as the University of Wyoming men's basketball team beat Montana State 61-51 Tuesday night at Worthington Arena in Bozeman, Montana.

Ugly win outside of Nance, but a win is a win, and I'll take it.

Also, Nance living up to his preseason hype in the game with over 30 points.

One for the Road: UW’s Nance, Cooke, dominate Montana State (WyoSports.net)

“We chose to take only seven 3-pointers because Larry was feeling it, and if he was doubled, he dumped it off to Cooke for a couple of dunks,” UW coach Larry Shyatt said during his postgame interview on the Cowboy Sports Network.

“We played every bit as tenacious when the subs came,” Shyatt said. “They did everything they needed to and we needed them in some critical situations.”

Shyatt couldn’t be happier with play, presence of Nance Jr.

“Larry’s never exceed my expectations in anything because it starts with the family and his value system,” Shyatt said. “Then it flowers onto the court. Was he ahead of schedule from a physical aspect? Absolutely. In this day and age, with young athletes I’ve had a chance to watch, coach and coach against, what breath of fresh air to have a person that’s both fun to be around off the floor and who understands the game mentally.”

RunRebs: Rashad Vaughn — Dec. 29 (Run Rebs)

Rashad Vaughn met with the media before Monday’s practice, and topics of conversation ranged from Wednesday’s Mountain West opener at Wyoming to his general comfort level after 10 college games. The freshman guard also spoke about the state of the team at the moment, saying that the Rebels are playing better than they have all season.

New Year's Eve: Cowboys Host Rebels to Start MW Season
Game is Earliest Start to Wyoming's Conference Season Ever

About the Series
Wyoming trails in the all-time series with UNLV, 15-34, but owns a 12-9 mark in Laramie. The last six meetings have gone to the Rebels, including the last two by a combined six points. The Cowboys' last victory over UNLV was a 68-66 upset of the No. 11/13 Rebels on Feb. 4, 2012, in Laramie. In the last meeting between the two, UNLV earned a 71-67 win on March 13 in the quarterfinals on the MW tournament in Las Vegas. Josh Adams posted 24 points and UW was within one point of the Rebels with 23 seconds left, but UNLV made key free throws in the end.

Wyoming men's basketball: Wyoming enters conference play Wednesday with 11-2 record (WyoSports.net)

UNLV is second in the nation with 92 blocked shots. Wood and 6-10 freshman post Goodluck Okonoboh both average three blocked shots per game.

The Rebels also are second in the country in defensive rebounds per game (30.42). UW averages 24.2.

Along the perimeter, 6-6 true freshman guard Rashad Vaughn averages a league-best 18.1 points per game.

“UNLV presents some problems if you attack the rim,” Shyatt said. “Then you go to the perimeter, and they have one of the best, if not the best, in our league in Vaughn in terms of scoring ability. They create some inside-outside problems, will rotate eight or nine guys, and they have the full attention of that coaching staff.”
