Wyoming caps off brutal stretch with road test at California

“I don’t know if there’s 10 teams in the country that have played nine games in this short a time," Shyatt said. "I think, in terms of injuries, illness, significant minutes for reserves, except for those six minutes we’d love to have back where we got a little shiner in Dallas, I thought it’s been a pretty good three weeks."

Fortunately for Cal, which is opening a seven-game homestand that extends through the opening weekend of the Pac-12 schedule, junior point guard Tyrone Wallace has picked up the scoring slack.

Wallace, who on Monday was named Pac-12 Player of the Week for the second time this season, is averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds over the past three games.

“We just have to finish,” said senior forward Larry Nance Jr., UW’s leading scorer, who was held to four points on 1-of-4 shooting at SMU.

“That game was on our side for the first 30 minutes and then kind of slipped away from us. If we can stay with teams and finish toward the end, whether it is a four-point run here or there, that’s what we need to do.”

Anyone see the Denver news this morning when Tad Boyle was talking about their game against CSU tonight? He said CSU will be the best team they have faced so far. I guess he has moved on from the drubbing his team took in Laramie.

Mathews Could Take Center Stage vs. Wyoming

Martin Scouts Wyoming: “They’re very well-coached, one of the most disciplined teams you’ll see on both ends of the floor. Really make you work on both ends of the floor. On offense, you have to be able to make shots. If you don’t make shots, it becomes extremely tough, because of the way they defend. They don’t allow you to get in the lane. They force you to make tough shots on the perimeter. Offensively, they execute their offense as well as anybody in the country. They ball screen, with motion and spacing, they have perimeter guys that can make shots, they have post guys that can make plays. Larry Nance, Jr., is one of the best bigs in the country, regardless of what level. He posts up strong, he’s a great athlete, so they have all the parts to be successful. They’ve been together for a while, so they understand each other. When you have a team like that, with that kind of chemistry, and the way they bond, it’s always tough.”

What struck me about the Denver Post article was the roster listing for CSU. Almost all of the starters and reserves are transfers from other schools.

From the Cal Bears Blog:

** UPDATE: Saw PG (and Pac-12 Player of the Week) Tyrone Wallace in a sweatshirt, not participating in Cal’s practice at that moment and was told he’s under the weather. **

The post about Tyrone Wallace being under the weather was from yesterday. He's probably feeling well enough today to play, but if he isn't, I wouldn't personally try to get him out on the court...if you know what I mean.

That shouldn't be a surprise. That's all Eustachy does. He doesn't recruit high schoolers, he uses his connections and calls kids from other programs that he knows are leaving those schools.

That's why they are a solid program now. He has learned the MWC competition, and just reloads one JR or SR with another one.
