Why Wyoming Can Beat Nebraska [WyoNation Blog]

A generally well-informed piece - better than most of the stuff you see written by people that don't actually follow our team.

The only thing that really sticks out to me is you're defeating yourself in the discussion of our defense. If you attribute our defensive woes to Pelini preferring players with great knowledge of his system over players with better athleticism (which is valid), then you can't simultaneously not expect our defense to be better this season, as the new guys are all kinds of athletic but unversed in learning the defense. That's the consensus around the Nebraska camp - addition by subtraction with some new, really fast athletes filling the new roles that can make plays but are green.

That's pretty much what I expect - our defense will make some big plays and also make some youthful mistakes, and you'll score some points.

Does it worry the Husker faithful that the Nebraska defense gives up so many points in a conference where scoring a lot of points (sans Ohio State) is generally not the norm?

Martinez also has many flaws as a passer, a poor throwing motion that looks more like a shot put than a proper release, he throws off his back foot, he stares down his primary receiver and has a hard time reading defensive coverages (especially intermediately over the middle).

Did this guy watch Martinez at all last year? If this was 2012 and last year was 2011, the guy would be pretty spot on but Martinez made huge strides as a passer last year.

Theres a reason he was a All Big Ten QB last year.

Not to mention, that article completely forgets mention of a Nebraska running game that should run all over the place.

Well, if we're looking at the conference, we gave up a lot of points twice - OSU and Wisconsin II. The OSU game was a case of the dam breaking - we started the game off well, but when things went bad we folded. We also beat Wisconsin earlier in the year, and there are a lot of circumstances that may or may not have gone into the enigma of a game the rematch was. The biggest of which, I think, is when our starting safety was on record saying the coaches had them ready mentally for everything Wisconsin threw at them, but some of the players abandoned their responsibilities to the team defense and tried playing maverick-style.

So I mean, is it concerning? Of course it's concerning when you give up record-territory points and yards. But overall our defense was above average, and put in some really fine performances over the season - it's just that when it rained it poured.

Did you not read the blog? Where did I say Wyoming WOULD beat Nebraska? I only said they can beat Nebraska.

Taylor Martinez is a good football player but a bad quarterback. His throwing motion did improve from horrible to very bad I've seen everyone of his games, I would know.

Other than the guy at Ohio State? Honestly, you just never really hear about Big 10 QBs for the most part, except Russell Wilson who is now in the NFL. So, no surprise there really. Since the Big 10 is still learning about the Forward Pass, let alone the read option and spread offenses.

Yeah... I'll just let Martinez do his own talking this Saturday.

Well considering the article was discussing the factors that could lead to a Wyoming victory, talking about the running game that is very good and UW's run defense that isn't very good wouldn't really fit into the article. If he made an article saying why Wyoming probably won't win then he would include your running game amongst plenty of other reasons.

Russell Wilson was a one year transfer. However, if you look at the NFL there are some Big10 QBs.. Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Blaine Gabbert.

Martinez was 1st team all big 10 in 2012 for the coaches and second team all big 10 for the Media.

Just FYI

I meant the last few years.

And I'm not sure, but has Blaine Gabbert actually done anything in the NFL? I never hear his name mentioned.

Blaine Gabbert?

The one that played for Missouri, right?

......in the Big Ten?

He was a Big12 QB.

And no, he has not.

The Martinez piece was inaccurate. Wyoming fans need to realize there was a 2012 season, and both teams QBs have gotten considerably better since then. I could care less if he throws a football like a shot put or like a discus. if he can get it from point a to point b with 62% accuracy, I will live with whatever throwing motion he wants.
The recruiting piece is a bit off kilter. Bo is not the best recruiter. The team usually sits behind OSU and Michigan in Big Ten rankings. Husker fans will take that. Good luck with your two stars. Saying his defenses aren't as good as the 2009 team isn't a sound argument. Different conference, different styles of offense. Whether UW fans believe it or not, Pelini makes spread offenses look silly. He can't stop a good rushing attack all that well, but I have faith in his defense stopping aerial attacks.
Last thing I got a chuckle at.. Christiansen better have looked at tape from the Huskers 4 losses. Because I apparently can't dissect tape on his own. (Cal Poly)

Other than that, a well rounded article.

Umm.. shut up. :)

Also, as far as Big Ten quarterbacks:

http://www.draftnasty.com/football/articles/big-ten-produces-the-best-quarterbacks/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Which conference produces the best quarterbacks? Judging by players on current rosters only, the Big Ten edges the Southeastern and Atlantic Coast Conferences by a nose, according to a rating system I devised specifically to answer that question.

I examined the 85 quarterbacks currently on NFL rosters, and assigned them to the conference in which they played while in college. So the Big East, not the ACC, gets credit for Michael Vick’s performance at Virginia Tech; Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert counts for the Big 12 and not the SEC, and so on.

Does it worry the Husker faithful that the Nebraska defense gives up so many points in a conference where scoring a lot of points (sans Ohio State) is generally not the norm?

Sans Ohio State? You brought it up....

Nebraska surrendered 386 points last season. Let's not worry that this is still less points given up than those allowed by Wyoming, (401) in two less games.

You think Nebraska allowed a lot of points to THE CONFERENCE WHERE SCORING IS NOT THE NORM?

Sits you stated, "SANS OHIO STATE," lets removed them from the equation:

386-63 = 325

Let's remove UCLA, they're not in the conference "where scoring is not the norm":

325-36= 289

Welp, let's remove the Georgia game, since they're "not in the conference where scoring is not the norm either."

289-45 = 244

Nebraska allowed 22.6 points per game against conference teams and other programs not named Ohio State, UCLA, or Georgia last season. And keep in mind that includes 73 points allowed to Wisconsin.

Vs:

Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Minnesota, Penn State, Northwestern, and Wisconsin ( the first time these teams played)

Nebraska allowed: 18.8 ppg and 273 yards per game

So what were you saying about Nebraska allowing "lots of points" (sans Ohio State) "in a conference where scoring lots of points is not the norm"?

Give me a break people. I respect your desire to root for your team. I think Brett Smith is a terrific QB, and he will lead Wyoming to more than a couple of scoring drives.

But this will be the best offense you face all season long. This current Nebraska team, in year 3 of Tim Beck's scheme is going to averaged 500+ yards and 40+ ppg. They have 3 potential NFL draft picks starting on their offensive line. They have an NFL running back, and two future NFL receivers.... And despite you hatred for Taylor Martinez, he's the reigning 1st Team All Big Ten QB.
