i know it'll be set later on, but just need some heads up on what we can expect....thanx

Roster is here and up to date: http://www.gowyo.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/wyo-m-baskbl-mtt.html

As far as line-ups/playing time go, here is my guess now, which changes every few weeks:

Starters:

PG - Riley Grabau (Jr.) - The most interesting spot from my perspective as you could also put Adams or Washington in here. I really don't know what Shyatt will do.

SG - Jerron Granberry (Sr.) - Will be our primary perimeter threat.

SG/SF - Charles Hankerson, Jr. (Jr.) - Impact transfer

F - Derek Cooke, Jr. (Jr.) - DC's development will be a key indicator for this team. Obviously has the athleticism to make an impact at this level and displayed a nice rebounding rate both last year in limited minutes and at JC. Can he refine his offensive game? I don't expect him to be primary option on offense, but if he can improve his movement off the ball and positioning he could get himself into place for some nice finishes at the rim. Then comes the next step, can he hit FT's at a 50% clip? If not (he hit 33% last year, and 40% or so in JC) then expect the opposition to foul him hard if he gets any opportunities near the rim.

F - Larry Nance, Jr. (Jr.) - Can he make the transition from supporting cast to primary offensive option? Has the skill set to work from a variety of angles, quality FT shooter, and range to the 3 point line. His health is critical. Pokes really struggled when he was less than 100% last year.

Bench Contributors:

G - Nate Sobey (Sr.) - JC transfer was productive off the bench last year. A little bit of a wild card, which probably irked Shyatt, but also was able to add a spark that seemed to be lacking from others. A very good athlete and solid perimeter shooter (42% from the arc). A lot of JC guys really improve in their 2nd year at D1, if Sobey is able to, he could be a big part of the rotation.

G - Josh Adams (So.) - See my note at the top about the starting PG position. I thought Adams did a great job defensively as a Freshman, to the point that Shyatt basically handed him the toughest perimeter assignment in every game, even if that assignment was 5 inches taller (Franklin). With Shyatt's emphasis on defense it wouldn't surprise me if Adams started over either Grabau or Granberry. I started Granberry because I just don't see how our offense will work without that type of perimeter threat, but Adams will be a key piece of this team regardless.

G - Trey Washington (Fr.) - Could be an impact player for 4 years. His size is a limitation and always will be, but provides quickness, a strong perimeter shot, and handle. May be short, but still taller than Luster or Gilmore.

F/C - Your guess is as good as mine. Haldorson, Sellers, and Vernon. Who plays and how much? No idea.

Anything on Herndon?
He will redshirt. Needs some time in the weight room and development.
Do you know that for a fact or are you just saying that?

Have seen him in pickup games, needs work. Would be a waste to use him for this season.

Agreed. While I don't think any of us know for sure what Shyatt will do, I am very confident that Herndon will not see significant court time this year (barring a really bad run of injuries) and it would seem to be a waste of a year of eligibility to have him sit and watch.

OTOH, Shyatt hasn't really utilized voluntary redshirts much (not sure if that is driven by player requests or the coaching staff). Guys like Haldorson and Marshall could have benefited from a redshirt year IMO.

I believe you, but Haldorson could have used one too and he played on occasion last year. Wyoming is in a better position to redshirt players this year so it'll be interesting to see what Shyatt does.

Basketball players hardly ever get red-shirted. We have this talk every frickin season.
People say we need to redshirt players. Then during the season people complain about lack of depth.
Now that we finally have depth, you want to take it away and redshirt players?
Not every player on the team is going to be a star, some of them just need to get on the court and play and help the team.
If they don't have an elite ceiling (NBA, or 1st team MWC type skill) there is no point in red shirting them and hoping the next year they are the next Marcus Bailey.

Play the kids we have, because we have them.

1. Plenty of basketball players redshirt. We have 2 players on our current team that took a redshirt year (plus 2 others that took a transfer redshirt year, but those aren't voluntary of course).

2. We had plenty of bodies last year. The depth issue is not about number of players, it's about the number of players that can actually contribute at the MWC level. Last year we had 5 players at the 4/5 position (Nance, Washington, Cooke, Sellers, Haldorson). That is just as many as any other team in the MWC. The difference is that our 3-5 guys were not ready to be contributors at this level, so we struggled. Herndon is less ready than Cooke, Haldorson, or Sellers were last year so he will not contribute to depth one way or the other. That doesn't mean he will be redshirted, because maybe there is no real benefit in that for him, but he won't be a contributor.

Who has red-shirted besides the transfers?
No one....

Cooke(at Cloud) and Sellers (split his RS year between WWCC and UW).

Is that official or just a guess?
What about Hankerson? He might be the most talented player on the team.

Not "official". But not just a guess either (assuming no injuries or real breakthroughs in the next three weeks). Let's see who shows up Oct 31 and what the pace looks like.

From what I hear, Nance put on some muscle, which is a good thing as last year, even before he got sick, he was pretty undersized for a PF/C at just a bit over 200lbs.

I see him every Tuesday and Thursday between classes. He has definitely gotten bigger.
