Brett Smith is simply a better QB than ACS in just about every way. I think Brett Smith as a true freshman gave us a better chance at winning games than ACS as a Junior. I doubt that DC would have given the starting job to Brett Smith over ACS and who knows maybe Brett Smith would have transferred.
I am not a fan of DC, but I do believe that he will play the players that give him the best chance to win. That would have been eventually led to Brett Smith starting over ACS. If ACS had stayed, maybe Brett could have taken a redshirt year and developed even more, or maybe ACS would have been relegated to a back-up either way.
Regardless, the Pokes went 4-8 last year due in no small part to lack of depth at the QB position (well, that and atrocious defense of course). High roster turnover and the resulting lack of depth/talent has been a consistent trend in DC's program and I don't think it can be spun as a positive. If that was ACS taking snaps instead of Kirkegaard against Cal Poly, than I believe we would have avoided one of the most humiliating losses in school history and the resulting downturn in the program (I think the team lost confidence after that and Brett changed how he reacted/dealt with certain situations-see Nevada game).
