Well, welcome to 2014! The Pokes will waste no time getting back on the court in the new year as they tip off against Western State later this afternoon. On paper, this game is a complete mis-match. However, it took the Cowboys until late in the 2nd half to put away the only other Division II opponent they faced this year in Black Hills State. That said, Black Hills State is a significantly better team than Western State and it showed when the two teams faced off earlier this season with Black Hills State winning easily.
Player to Watch: Jordan Adams (G, 6'3, 180 lbs, Sr.)
Not only is this an interesting match-up because of the fact that he is Josh Adams brother, but he is also Western State's best player. You can bet he will be amped to attempt to pull off the upset against his younger brother and the heavily favored Cowboys. I expect to see Jordan put up a lot of shots in this game, many of which will be forced. This should play right into the Poke's hands. The slight chance the Mountaineers have in this game rests solely upon Jordan Adams having a monster game. He is a good basketball player, but not good enough to single handedly will his vastly over-matched team to a win on the road.
There is absolutely nobody on Western State's team with half the skill set of Nance. Our first ten half court offensive possessions should be nothing more than getting the ball to Nance on the block. There should be a rule that nobody else can take a shot outside of an open layup until Nance has touched the ball on the low block. If Shyatt wants to get some work for his reserves in the 2nd half, the way to do that is to get Nance the ball early and often.
