Western State @ Wyo

I want a 100-50 win.

I can't see Coach Shyatt pushing a lead to 50. I do expect the coaching staff will be a little disappointed if we give up 50.

I can see a 70-40 game, if we hit our shots. If we don't then I think we need to pay attention to scoring efficiency defense--pick your stat.

I heard on the radio last night that this game was moved when we learned that we got a bye on the first MWC date so that we would not have too much time off.

We have had New Year's Eve games in the past. Would love to have Tim Miles and UNL at this spot on the schedule.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Shyatt started only the bench players and only added starters near the end if it looked like Western was going to take it? That, to me, would be an watchable game.

Did you see the 2nd half of the UCCS game? That's pretty much what Shyatt did (only he never did bring the starters in). It was not what I would consider "watchable".

So this game is so late in the schedule because it is technically MWC play and Wyo had a bye.
Also, this game is at 2 not a late game!

Good way to bring in the new year!

And according to some Vorel tweets the Pokes haven't even looked at Western State, just focusing on themselves. Which is what they need to do in my opinion.
And they had been doing 2 a days.
And according to baby-shy, the practices were REAL good.

This will be a big blowout I think.

The UCCS game was a exhibition. It did not count in the record. Western State does, that is the difference. And by "watchable", I mean a game with some suspense in it - close, lead changes, outcome dependent on smart tactical moves and concentrated play -- not some mindless blowout. That's why the Poke B-squad would make it an interesting game.

Well, welcome to 2014! The Pokes will waste no time getting back on the court in the new year as they tip off against Western State later this afternoon. On paper, this game is a complete mis-match. However, it took the Cowboys until late in the 2nd half to put away the only other Division II opponent they faced this year in Black Hills State. That said, Black Hills State is a significantly better team than Western State and it showed when the two teams faced off earlier this season with Black Hills State winning easily.

Player to Watch: Jordan Adams (G, 6'3, 180 lbs, Sr.)
Not only is this an interesting match-up because of the fact that he is Josh Adams brother, but he is also Western State's best player. You can bet he will be amped to attempt to pull off the upset against his younger brother and the heavily favored Cowboys. I expect to see Jordan put up a lot of shots in this game, many of which will be forced. This should play right into the Poke's hands. The slight chance the Mountaineers have in this game rests solely upon Jordan Adams having a monster game. He is a good basketball player, but not good enough to single handedly will his vastly over-matched team to a win on the road.

There is absolutely nobody on Western State's team with half the skill set of Nance. Our first ten half court offensive possessions should be nothing more than getting the ball to Nance on the block. There should be a rule that nobody else can take a shot outside of an open layup until Nance has touched the ball on the low block. If Shyatt wants to get some work for his reserves in the 2nd half, the way to do that is to get Nance the ball early and often.

Uh, to those of you coming into town for the game, make sure the roads are open. Woke up to about an inch of snow and it started up again just a little bit ago and its coming down pretty good. So be careful.

The wife & I are both sick with the Christmas/New Years Crud, so we won't be coming to Laramie today. Thanks for the info anyway.

Team getting out played by 0-9 team during the first 10 mins of the game no time for 360 dunks, However it is Adams and him and cooke are the only people on the team that dunk and get the crowd involved.

Agreed. They look lazy, but Washington looks like he came out to play, which is good driving to the basket and trying to make plays

Yikes. A 17-point win over DII school does not paint a pretty picture going forward. Reno on Saturday will be a must-win.

Why does Shyatt expect us to care if the team (including the coaching staff) don't?

Any team that cares about competitive performance on the court would never put Jack Bentz on the floor with that much time. After he entered the game, Western State hit 5 threes (plus 3 points on a foul on a 3-pointer) to go with a dunk that they got off of an awful cross court pass from Bentz. The defense just completely fell apart with him on the court. He should only see the floor in the last minute like Aaron Tyser (who can at least hit a 3). It was just like the second half against UCCS.

No energy, no effort. It's too late in the season to treat a game like an exhibition. Need to prepare and execute like it's a real game.

The only reason this game was this late in the schedule is because Shyatt knows teams come out flat after X-Mas break. He didn't want our first game back to be a MWC game.

If you think this game and the performance of the team have any implications on how the team is going to perform you are wrong.

This was essentially a pre-season game. They treated it like that. The Pokes had backups in almost all game and Nance hardly even played.
The game was never in question and the team made a lot of mistakes and that is why we played this game now.

Conference play starting at Nevada is going to be fun.
Wyo should win in Reno.

Don't freak out because it was "only" a 17 point win. Wyo had it at 23 with just a few minutes left, who cares if Western State hits some 3's in garbage time?

I wouldn't worry about this game too much. Shyatt purposely played the bench guys a lot today. He was working on some things. He knew that Wyoming would win the game so it was more of a scrimmage for him to try some different looks.

They will be ready to play for conference. I wouldn't be concerned about todays game though. Wyoming has already shown they can play with top 20 teams on the road which are both better than any team in the MWC right now. Does that mean they will win the conference? Nope. I think they will finish in the top half though.

Also on a side note. CSU will upset SDSU tonight in Fort Collins :thumb:
