Well that is disappointing...

I still didn't like our rebounding effort especially at the end of the game. It would be really nice if our team would play tough in a first half then we wouldn't be trying to come back from double digits every second half

Right. The rebounding really is horrible. Even the TV announcer says so. Flatfooted and almost no blocking out. So what assistant coach is supposed to take care of that?

No rebounding, some really weak defense and Afam going inside when they need a three at the end killed them. They played down just enough below the crappy play of TCU to lose this one. And wow was Artur cold tonight

I agree. Sure is easier to win games when you dont spot the other team a dozen points to begin with.

well... maybe next year
Maybe Saturday. This team is starting to play better, but are still showing lapses of old. Just keep on getting better and anything can happen.

It isn't the regular season winner that goes to the NCAA tourney, it is the MWC tourney winner.

I agree it was disappointing, but I must say that I can see some improvement in the team. Still lacking in a lot of areas, but I'm not as upset about this one as I was after CSU. I can only really pick on a few things right now:

1) rebounding as you all have already said. I'm tired of seeing four of our guys get beaten by one guy wearing the other teams jersey. I can distinctly remember one play where at least two guys (Waddell and Jackson maybe?) stood there and watched the TCU player grab the ball. This is unacceptable.

2) Free throws. We make our free throws down the stretch, and we probably win last night.

3) Shot selection. Especially at the end of the last game, our shot selection was horrbile. If Waddell continues to hit that ten-foot turnaround, they need to feed the ball in the low post much more often. Threes are nice and get the crowd into it, but I'd much rather have the higher percentage shot.

Fix those things, or even two out of three, and we probably are 3-0 in conference right now. If we continue to not do these things, it's going to be a long season. All in all, I think this team still has a long way to go, but I do see some improvement.

GO POKES!

Afam had almost half our points last night. I think we had 5 points over 8 minutes into the game. One thing struck me last night watching an almost unwatchable first half: other than Afam, we don't have 1 player who would play significant minutes on any other team in this league (with the possible exception of Air Force). The talent on this team is so thin, it's hard to believe we beat SDS. The only time we are competitve is when we get into some early offense off a turnover or missed shot. Our half court offense is laughable.

Perhaps the players are better than I think. But who would start on any other team in this league other than Muojeke? Not Waddell or Thiam and not Luster. A.J. Davis has been a big disappointment so far. In fact, he hardly played last night. I think Heath is looking for someone to step up and contribute and he's trying everyone. Someone posted that we are'nt that far from being 3-0. Well, we are lot closer to being 0-3. It's going to take a big effort this Saturday to beat NM. I hope someone steps up to help Muojeke or it's going to be a long night.

Jeeez. You don't think Waddell could start for a few teams in this league? Luster? Even though you aren't a fan of this team, don't let it cloud your judgement. I also think M'Baye and Jackson could start for a few teams. But, they are Cowboys and I am pulling for them to succeed.

This board reminds me of when we lost to CSU in Vic's first year. I was amazed and sickened as I watched so-called Wyoming fans throw drinks on our players. Way to support your teams poke fans.

What has Jackson done this year to make you think he would play, let alone start, on any team in this league? Last night, he gets the in bounds pass after checking in and he's still trying to pull his shorts up while he's dribbling! He made a couple of stupid turnovers and he's out.

If we wanted to play a two man game with Afam, who would it be with? Can we pick and roll with anyone on this team? No.

By the way, writing a post questioning the team's talent is not the same as physically assaulting them. I love sunshine pumpers like you. Okay, how's this? We have the best talent in the league. There. Happy now?

I don't think it's reasonable to compare the two scenarios at all. Some criticism of a team with very poor results on a message board is hardly analogous to the classless display exhibited by students during that game in 1999 (it was actually in Dimel's last year, not Vic's first. I wonder if the Vic era was a karmic retribution for that display? I was a student and I was embarrassed and pissed off by the behavior of some students during that game).

I don't think our talent is quite as weak as you describe it. The Pokes have more talent (IMO) than TCU, CSU, or AFA. Those teams have superior coaching, but not superior talent overall. Maybe if everyone was healthy and eligible for CSU they would be close, but the group they put on the floor right now is not as gifted as our group. The difference is that their coaching staff prepares them for what they will see and the execute with solid fundamentals (well, sometimes, more so than the Pokes anyway).

"Sunshine Pumpers", oh man that is great! lol.
I have to agree with you though. right now I dont think any of our guys would start on any other teams except AFA, maybe csu. When you look at everyone else's forwards and centers, no - i dont think Waddel would start ahead of them. He gives a lot of effort, but he doesnt have the skills the others do. We see flashes of great things from some of our guys, but thats it. I think jackson could get to that level as he develops, we'll see. AJ has great skills, but his turnovers and fouls offset that. On a whole, I think our team looks lazy out there a lot of times. If you watch, when a shot is taken, NO ONE boxes out for a rebound. NO ONE. They all stand their ground and wait for the ball while the other team gets position and goes after the ball. You have to do that, EVERYTIME, and the Pokes just arent doing it now. I'm not giving up on this team, i'll be there every home game. I like these players, and I think they can be good. They just have to get out there and prove it.

A lot of posters on this board have called this team "athletic". Is that a fancy way of saying they don't have any basketball skills? We may have superior talent to TCU and Air Force. But since we lose at TCU every year anymore, I'm going to say it's close. CSU at full strength is a different matter. I was disappointed in the way TCU could back pick our player and get layups. No one rotated on defense to cover the player going to the basket. That's junior high fundamentals. That's not communicating and laziness.

If Jackson doesn't want to pull his shorts up until he gets on the court, then I would sit him until he learns to dress. If I was Schroyer, I would have called time out and pulled him before he dribbled the ball to half court. That kind of crap is inexcusable and has no place in any Wyo. program.
