I mean, sure the play call could have been better, but tbh it wasn't as bad as some people are making it out to be. The pass itself was horrendous.
He had his man (a receiver with at least 6 inches on the guys in front of him) open, with plenty of space in the back of the end zone. If he doesn't horrifically short arm that ball, it's an easy TD.
Granted, at this point Johnson should know there's a 50/50 chance that Svoboda absolutely tanks a pass like that, so I digress.
On a broader note, we really need to just drop the Wildcat packages.
JJ seems to think that just because we have a former QB at TE means we have to find a way to utilize those sets. But it's not working.
Successful Wildcat packages are predicated on a dual threat, with athletes that are great runners but are also a decent threat to pass. Boise State's red zone packages with Grant Hedrick (Kellen Moore's backup) were a great example of this and were part of the reason they had so much success during their heyday.
Svoboda is clearly not a passing threat, which forces you into run-only options and everyone in the stadium...including defenses....knows it.
Svoboda is also not a good enough runner for us to rely on his legs alone. We've seen him get stuffed more often than not, or only pick up a yard or two when we needed 4 or 5.
Svoboda is also not a good decision maker; we've seen multiple instances where he hands off when he shouldn't...or, conversely, pulls when he shouldn't. He doesn't make good reads and that's half the reason he's no longer a QB in the first damned place.
I'm going to throw up if I see us trot out the Wildcat one more time.

This year CSU has been using the wildcat with Bullock producing very marginal results although I would prefer him over the slower not many moves Svoboda.
There was a huge reason why Svoboda was the 4th string QB at a very weak Snow JC. He wasn’t seriously recruited by the FCS despite media write ups. He really only had a senior HS season in Mesa limited by Covid. His main advantage was he had the size of a big man going against a bunch of high schoolers who weren’t exactly physical specimens. And to have Bohl advertise nationally for a QB and then sign him almost the next day shows just how serious the program has been about the pursuit of playmakers.

He was throwing it to JMG no matter what, but JMG had 3 guys on him, he might have been able to catch it with air under the ball, might
I love the guy's grit and willingness to stick around after losing the QB spot, but if we were recruiting him right now, based on what we have seen the past two years, there is no way he would ever be offered a slot. As cold and calculating as it sounds, he is sitting in a roster spot that someone much more productive could be filling.

In fairness to Bohl, Wyoming signed Andrew Peasley after the National advertisement. Svoboda was always a physical specimen project and Bohl clearly intended to sign an experienced QB. Peasley more than proved he was a good signing.
The next year, Bohl brought in former 4 star QB Carson May. May just wasn’t nearly as good as his stars coming out of HS suggested. Pretty funny but May ended up transferring to Abilene Christian where he continued to suck at QB and was moved to tight end also.
I believe it’s only fair to present all the facts when it is alleged Bohl wasn’t serious about bringing in QB talent.
I think every coach is doing what they can to bring in QB talent. Look around the MWC, MAC, CUSA... The bottom 2/3s of those conferences are pretty much some version of what we are seeing under center in Laramie. I would like to see us have a better system than focus on trying to get Josh Allen talent to Wyoming.....
In my mind, Bohl never gave such preferential treatment to any player like he did with Svoboda. And he was clearly the least deserving. Free school, room and board beats the hell out of sitting in the hot sun in Mesa,

Don’t forget Caden Becker and the walk on baseball player from Oklahoma awarded a scholarship about the same time. The Utah walk on transfer wasn’t very spectacular either.
A lot of wasted development time instead of getting someone more ready to play. If DC could find ACS and Smith, Bohl could have pursued a player who could run and throw but instead kept trying for the 6’5” 230 lb run first worry about 8 in the box defenses later.
It’s great he was able to snag Peasley because otherwise he didn’t have diddly doo as an alternative.
Allen and Peasley - 2 QB’s that were over 50% passing. I liked Chambers but despite his running abilities before being injured, he was still a 49% passer.
There was a reason why Bohl’s success was 75% against losing teams and only 25% against winning teams. The stronger teams slowed down the rushing attack and our ineptness at passing assisted their defense.
Not trying to be argumentative. Just expressing the frustration of the struggles to be a .500 or better program and am so hungry to expect to win games with an offensive attack that seems like it is routinely difficult to stop. Heck, I was irritated that for a rushing team we often struggled to get to 200 yards in a game at times. If we were going to be a rushing and no pass offense then do it AFA style and get 350+ yards rushing per game.

Allen turned out to be great for WYO, but remember that he wasn’t originally recruited to be a Cowboy. Anyone with two braincells could tell he was the best option until his collarbone injury at the time, maybe even just one brain cell.
