We needed another thread on the scrimmage...

I was able to attend this past Sunday, my thoughts below. Take if for what it is worth - and yes, I realize that this was only the "first" scrimmage, and 6th practice.

Defensively: We are slow, tired, out of shape, and lethargic looking. Hands on the hips after one series, and even the captain went down after overheating. Going to be a long year, unless the ball completely bounces our way - a lot. Burns went down with a stubbed vag (hamstring tightened probably) after practicing a punt return, prior to the scrimmage, and never made it onto the field. His replacement, Finley, was the bright spot on the D though. Downside to Finley is that he talks a lot of shit - hope he can back it up when the real deal begins. This defense sure isn't "cowboy tough". It pissed me off to watch.

Offense: Other than Brett's first few series (INT & Fumble, a couple of bad throws), he got it going. First team O line was the highlight of the scrimmage. But I wonder, because our D sucks so bad, if that made them look that good. Thompson going against the 1's was also a bright spot - he had a great day. Captain Kirk - god help us if he ever sees the field. WR's are deep, as we all knew. The kid from Colorado (Darden) made a couple of huge catches...one with just one hand jumping to reel it in. He was a spark on offense. Makes me wonder if Colorado just didn't utilize him, or what.

PAT's / FG's - impressed, to say the least. All three kickers (and some other dude wearing #92) made them all but one wide right. Kickoffs were short, but I have become used to that. At least there was hang time on those that were short. Finley, looked not only fast, but quick, and quick on the first step (punt returns). This is a late signing JC kid, and already looks the best in the defensive backfield - I guess we were really thin.

We have a ton of players wearing red jersey's. Not good - and not a good sign. That is it for now...

Kirkgaard will probably play peaches. Not extended or meaningful playing time but playing time still.

And the red-jerseys, a couple of them will be fine by next week.

And the defense will get into better shape.

You are probably right about Captain Kirk - we better be up by 42 with 3 minutes left, so we still can get the W by 7.

13 Players in red jerseys after 5 practices (one in full pads) - that would indicate to me that we have a conditioning type problem.

Having watched UW football for many, many years, I put this D (the one I saw Sunday) up as one of the softest I have seen. It was ice bag a palooza on the field. Hope I am proven wrong, and they turn the corner, we need it to happen bad!

I just wonder how a 20 year old kid can be that out of shape - where is the commitment, where is the desire to be the best, where is the duty to come out of summer in the best shape of your life. Somebody mentioned that we were hard hitting in another thread. I didn't see it that way.

I think that although they were getting burned and tired as hell, like carbonpoke wrote about the fast pace offense, the D had no chance to even get ready. I think DC wanted to wear them out, and that is why Smith and Thompson threw it so much on them.
I was looking at Yarbrough and a few other LBs and was impressed. The unit as a whole wasn't good, but the LBs were hitting hard, and the corners were decent (Finley pick6).
I think they will be in better shape for the Saturday scrimmage.

This thread reminds me of Fox news VS MSNBC. Two different views from two different worlds.

Lol yeah pretty much.
I just think that DC knew he wasn't giving his defense a chance. It was all about the offense. You could see that after every TD, either the same offense would stay on the field and they would snap the ball immediately, or the other offense would haul ass onto the field and they would snap it immediately.
I really think DC wasn't giving his D a chance. He wanted to wear them down and did.
I think the next two scrimmages will be a better indicator where the defense actually is.

Yeah so with that scrimmage yesterday, then 2-a-days, I think the defense is going to get into shape real quick.
Must suck for the defense especially right now. Getting gassed like they did yesterday, now getting worked 2 times a day for while. Ha, good luck with that.

More information from the WTE - on injuries:

Interesting to note:

"Christensen said the defense will continue to work on being more physical and on tackling drills and fundamentals."

In other words, they didn't hit very hard - or wrap up worth a shit.

“A lot of guys are sore. I would expect the entire team to have sore hamstrings and be tired, have a headache – that’s part of two-a-days and part of the grind of playing college football."

In other words, they are not in the best condition, but that will change - they need to toughen up.

The nice thing about having an offense that wear teams down is that our own defense gets to experience it more than anybody else, and thereby will be more ready for similar offenses. Hopefully.

Conditioning alone isn't going to be enough to be successful, though. I just hope they force enough turnovers that getting burned a few times per game won't matter.

Luckily Taylor Martinez is a turnover machine :)

Very true, on both points you made.

As far as the defense, how can we tell if they're improved? With smith on the field last year how many teams shut down our O? Maybe 3 Texas Boise n Fresno.. All though we moved the ball well against Texas and Boise. Our defense goes against a very good offense every day... That can only benefit them in the long run

+1

If there is one thing that dc knows it's that he needs his defense to step it up. He is aware if it more than anyone. And Tom B has made it clear that he expects a better defense. Poke fans we might be witnessing the final days if the CDC era if he doesn't get it turned around.

We might be seeing the final days of DC, or just the beginning of him starting to win high scoring game.

I really doubt the Pokes have a bad season and DC gets fired.
I think the Pokes are going to have a lot of wins in the next couple season, and then with Thompson, a lot more wins.
I doubt we are even half-way done with DC being @ Wyo.

I hope we haven't seen the end of DC because if he's around the next couple years it likely means we won more games than we lost.

I agree with both of you! I hope DC really delivers on his promise of competing for championships. It's just so frustrating that we went all those years with those amazing defenses with Glenn/breske and now we have a defense that's struggles. I'm really anxious for scrimmage #2. Hoping the D shows signs of life. How exciting is a play every :12 though! Ha I'd live to see a touchdown 1st or 2nd play of the game against the huskers. And a W!!!

Too bad Glenn isn't the D-coordinator for Christensen.
I miss watching those D's. Ward Dobbs will go down as one of my all time favorite LBs @ Wyo.
Those dudes on the defense for Glenn were Cowboy Tough as hell.
Imagine what would have been if Glenn could recruit a decent QB. Imagine what would have been if he had a Brett Smith.

Glenn wasn't the reason the defense was good. Far from the reason. It was Mike Breske and him alone. That dude is a terrific D coach. It was disappointing when Wyoming fired him when Glenn was let go. Then I got really excited when Montana signed him and he pooped all over the Big Sky with his defense.. now he coaches under Mike Leach at Wazzu. He'll turn that D around.

LOL Agreed on all......but I'm glad you included that last sentence.....cause WSU had one of the worst defenses in college football last year. Breske still has a huge rebuilding project ahead of him, and its all about talent with WSU. They are operating in the Pac-12 with mid-level MWC talent.

I disagree. I think you have to also give credit to Marty English (LB), and Lance Robinson (D Line). Many probably don't remember, but Breske was also the DB coach (which he excelled at).
