I was able to attend this past Sunday, my thoughts below. Take if for what it is worth - and yes, I realize that this was only the "first" scrimmage, and 6th practice.
Defensively: We are slow, tired, out of shape, and lethargic looking. Hands on the hips after one series, and even the captain went down after overheating. Going to be a long year, unless the ball completely bounces our way - a lot. Burns went down with a stubbed vag (hamstring tightened probably) after practicing a punt return, prior to the scrimmage, and never made it onto the field. His replacement, Finley, was the bright spot on the D though. Downside to Finley is that he talks a lot of shit - hope he can back it up when the real deal begins. This defense sure isn't "cowboy tough". It pissed me off to watch.
Offense: Other than Brett's first few series (INT & Fumble, a couple of bad throws), he got it going. First team O line was the highlight of the scrimmage. But I wonder, because our D sucks so bad, if that made them look that good. Thompson going against the 1's was also a bright spot - he had a great day. Captain Kirk - god help us if he ever sees the field. WR's are deep, as we all knew. The kid from Colorado (Darden) made a couple of huge catches...one with just one hand jumping to reel it in. He was a spark on offense. Makes me wonder if Colorado just didn't utilize him, or what.
PAT's / FG's - impressed, to say the least. All three kickers (and some other dude wearing #92) made them all but one wide right. Kickoffs were short, but I have become used to that. At least there was hang time on those that were short. Finley, looked not only fast, but quick, and quick on the first step (punt returns). This is a late signing JC kid, and already looks the best in the defensive backfield - I guess we were really thin.
We have a ton of players wearing red jersey's. Not good - and not a good sign. That is it for now...
