We did what we should have, it doesn't mean much....

While Northern Illinois is not as good this year as they have been, that was still a good win for the first game of the year and having little to no scouting on the opponent. The Cowboys did exactly what they should have against a FBS school so I will call it a good win also. They got out to an early lead and never were challenged for the rest of the game.

Unlike other people, I don't think the Nebraska games was "we played them tough for 3 quarters. We almost didn't score in the first half and Nebraska turned it over on the goal line with an interception on a terrible throw. I would say we played Nebraska tough for the third quarter only. That fourth quarter was disaster. I don't take an moral victories away from that game at all.

Its always tough to win on the road. That being said, Eastern Michigan is always one of the worst FBS schools every year and Wyoming, if they want to be competitive in conference, should win that game. I'll take road W's however and whenever I can get them.
I agree with you on No Ill and EM, but not so much on Nebraska. I feel we exactly played them tough for three quarters, not out-played them or kept up with them, but played them tough. I don't get what you mean by "we almost didn't score in the first half". We did score, and it was a deserved TD after receiving the ball from a punt. Plus, we "almost" scored 3 times in the first half. Cooper hits those FGs and it's a four point game at half. Then we did out-play them in the 3rd quarter, literally handing them their only score, while we had two of our own. There's no moral victory in 35 point losses, but the Pokes showed they can play a high caliber team, tough. It was basically one player that had a serious string of unfortunate play, not the entire team. Hell, I talked a lot of shit to their trolling fans, but Nebraska looks like the real deal, they could win 11 or 12 games this year.

We scored with 7 seconds left in the half. That, is the definition of, "We almost didn't score in the first half."

Still on par for going to Division 2 by year 2020.

There you go trotting out one of my pet peeves. I'm assuming you didn't mean actually Division II which is a complete step down, but rather stepping down a partial step to FCS or formally DIVISION I-AA.

People, people, people when are you going to get this right? FCS IS DIVISION I. The only differences between FCS and FBS is that Division I schools elected to participate in Football Championship Subdivision, not Football Bowl Subdivision. Under FBS those schools are Division I in all sports except football where they've elected to be restricted to 65 scholarships rather than the FBS limit of 85 scholarships. Also, teams playing in FCS have a true intersectional playoff involving 20 teams representing ALL the conferences in FCS as opposed to FBS that have only a four-team playoff for P5 schools, essentially.

Division II, on the other hand is a whole step down. There are more restrictions on scholarships, recruiting and other rules not used at the Division I level.

Here's a link to the NCAA's explanation of the different divisions in college sports: http://www.ncaa.org/about/who-we-are/membership/divisional-differences-and-history-multidivision-classification

So, to your main thesis...YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND. Wyoming will NEVER drop to Division II. And Wyoming will probably not drop to FCS, unless the crazies in the Wyoming legislature who hate Wyoming football, get their way.

We are off to the right start on the season. We are a much improved team. The problem is - we sucked so damn bad last year - we have a big ass hole to dig out of.

Here are a few of my takeaways from the game:

Offense
* The 3-4 defense didn't screw us up like it did against North Dakota last year. We were able to move the ball pretty well.

* We ran the ball well.

* Our passing game needs improvement.

* We need to convert more third downs. This will cost us big time against tougher teams.

Defense
* We have done a pretty good job of shutting the run down this year. Its been a long long time since we have done that. Some of Glenn's early teams were the last I think.

* We give up some big plays too often.

* It is way too easy to pass on us. In a close game, and clock is a problem, teams will pass, and of course they run all over us.

Special Teams
* Kicking game is quite a bit better.

* Return teams do a pretty decent job of blocking. We have some good return men.

Other interesting points:

Wyoming Offense 472 Yards - UC Davis 255 yards. 181 of those 255 were passing.

UC Davis racked up 392 yards on Oregon. 303 of those 393 were passing.

UC Davis racked up 617 on Southern Oregon. 393 of those 617 were passing.

TOP is obviously really important for our defense. I think our two key points going forward is being able to convert 3rd downs and defend against the pass.

I agree, keep improving and you could see it against a less than superior team on Saturday, BUT....although it's a road game we cannot have a let down against a lesser superior Eastern Michigan team again, like last year, cuz after this game it ramps up into the Conference Season then we'll really see how much more we are improved. Time will tell, but I sure liked what I saw on Saturday!!!! GO POKES

the UC Davis game was just what the Pokes needed to gain some confidence again and just work on executing their offense. And they won it in good fashion. The EMU is a good road test, considering how poorly Wyoming played them last year. This should be a good indication of how far this team has advanced. EMU lost several games by 1 TD or less last year and their offense has been able to score in most their games last year and this year. So to me the big test is how well Wyoming's defense can stop them. I mostly just want to see Pokes improve week to week this season.
