VOREL LEAVING

Closer to home AND he is going to cover Notre Dame football. Whether you love them or hate them, no one can argue that covering ND football is an ELITE sports journalistic opportunity.

NowherePoke beat everyone

He posted this like an hour ago in the WYO Hoops 2014-15 Articles/Notes/Quotes/Pics/Videos thread.

Weird, considering as soon as Vorel himself tweeted it I posted it on wyonation.....

really just can't keep good people or doesn't want to live in Laramie??? too bad, onto the next one
He was in Casper.

Not that it matters but he was in LAramie. The last several writers to cover UW sports have all lived in Laramie.

Well I said a year ago that he'll be leaving to greener pastures soon enough.... Does that mean I win?

+1

Sad to see him go. He did a fantastic job covering the teams. I guess covering the Cowboys is the minor leagues until you get called up to something bigger and better.

Nature of that business. Market size/circulation means that there will always be bigger jobs out there (much like coaching at UW). CST's general philosophy is to hire hungry, young talent in the beat reporter role with the knowledge that their tenure will be short. They have a great track record (with the exception of Frederickson, I really hate that guy) and it will be interesting to see who they hire next.

It has nothing to do with that. It's about moving on to a bigger and better thing. If Wyoming football was in the national spotlight year-in and year-out then I guarantee people would want to come cover Wyo football.

The bigger the audience for the writer the better. Not to mention, I am sure the pay is better.

If he eventually wants to cover an NFL team or move to TV like ESPN or CBS or Fox, etc. staying at Casper Star is not the way to do it.

Wow, this hurts. Never seen UW football stories like he does. I knew this day was coming. Too bad for us. Great for him. Best of luck to him. He put so much into UW, he deserves everything he gets.

Let's be honest. Most any school is an upgrade where we are currently. the fact he dumped his life into this for so long surprises me. He loved Laramie. But Notre Dame? HUGE for him! Good for him.

Compared to covering Notre Dame football? Well duh.

There's a reason people like Dino don't cover Wyo sports for their profession. Same with Tracy Ringolsby. He works for the MLB. These two are die-hard Poke fans but the reality is that covering Wyoming athletics is not how they got to where they are in their profession. Same with Vorel now.

There it is. I was wondering who would be the first to use this as a way to degrade Wyoming athletics.
