UW vs. UC - Colorado Springs

Well i will be optimistic and say it was the first game and an exhibition game so no need to freak out yet lol. I will save any rage I have for the real season and hopefully it goes a lot better than I am expecting.

I thought Nance looked very good. We will rely on him a lot this year.

Pretty much a struggle for everyone else. Herndon and Vernon are simply raw, true freshman who looked the part tonight. They are future pieces.

I think TW3 can be very good. We will have to live with some growing pains from him (really got lost on D tonight), but I think he can be an impact player for us down the road.

Adams is Adams. Works hard on D and can make some plays off the bounce that nobody else on the team can, but simply not a high percentage shooter.

The new rules are going to hurt Riley.

Looking forward to Sobey's year this year. Looked very solid going to the rim and I know he can stretch the defense.

Cooke is improving. I think he needs to be more confident on offense and look to be part of it. Other than catching lobs he doesn't really seem to want the ball. Just needs to be aggressive enough to make the opponent respect him. Hit his FT's tonight. Props to him for that.

If we have no depth and our bench isn't very good that is MORE reason to let the bench play an exhibition game.

They can't improve sitting on their ass on the bench.

Not one starter had more than 22 minutes (they coasted when they were in), and our supposed best player didn't participate. Definitely no reason to hit the panic button.

Shyatt is experimenting with different combinations in the lineup, he is finding out what works and doesn't work so well. This is what exhibition games are for.

I think saying there is no depth is a bit harsh. We played pretty good in the first half and our offense looked improved. I think that Washington, Granberry, Sellers (he looked pretty decent tonight looks like he can give us around 10 min per game), and Haldorson will all be decent off the bench. Not sure about why Hankerson didn't play but I still have the same opinions as before going to this game, we will be a bubble team for the tournament if we can finish with 2 losses or less
in non-conference.

Our non-conference is tougher than many think. I think there are 3 teams that will be solid NCAA tourney squads (CU, Ohio State, and Denver) and we play them all on the road. SMU will also be much improved, but we get them in Laramie.

In terms of depth, we got outscored 40-18 over the last 11+ minutes and only made 2 FG's in that time frame. This was against a bottom tier D2 squad. Would it have been different if Shyatt put the starters back in? Of course, but that's exactly the point. The drop off between our starters and bench is pretty dramatic and moreso than I expected.

I don't share your enthusiasm for Sellers game last night. I felt he looked lost out there. I thought he looked better last year when he got some run due to injuries. Part of it might not have been his fault though. We had him in the game but we never looked to get him the ball on the block. I don't see the value of having Sellers stand around the arc and perform dribble hand-offs. His primary skill is a soft touch around the basket. Especially against a team like UCCS.

I saw flashes from Haldorson (a couple of nice drives, and I know he can hit the perimeter shot, even if it didn't go down last night), but when he was in the game we got owned on the glass. Will be tough for him to play significant minutes in MWC action I think.

Granberry was surprisingly passive. He was out there with 3 true freshman and a walk-on for a significant portion of the 2nd half and I kept waiting for him to be more assertive and for the team to run some action to free him up for a perimeter look but neither really happened.

I still think we can win 18 and make some type of postseason, but I anticipate that we will play most of our games in the 55-50 range and limit possessions to protect our starters conditioning since we can't trust the bench. Pretty similar to the last couple of years.

To me, the key to our season is Derek Cooke, Jr. Nance is really expanding his game and will be a force all year and the bench is non-existent in the frontcourt (I expect to see a lot of very small lineups with 4 guards and a big as a result). That puts a lot on Cooke. He needs to be productive alongside Nance and also function as the sole big during periods when Nance is on the bench.

We were up by 26 with under 15 minutes to play. I think Shyatt was playing around at that point and maybe took the pedal off the metal. While UCCS was throwing up 3's late, we weren't. We were playing basically 3 guys straight out of high school along with a player who hasn't played in almost two years against a team that was playing their starters....and they returned all 5.

Waiting to see what Hankerson can add, but think this team has potential. Not going to try to define the season after one preseason game in which we lead by close to 30 points before pulling our starters and playing 3 true freshman the rest of the way.

Exactly way too early to tell, games like the Colorado one will tell us what to expect this season.

Did anyone have issues watching the game on gowyo.com? My feed kept making a popping noise and lagged quite a bit.

one thing I was kinda excited about was the students that sat behind me, they were truly into it giving the opposing teams players gruff and grief, if they keep it up it's gonna spread amongst more student fans and the AA is gonna be a loud place this year, let's just hope the team has the moxy to make it work!!!

I was pleasantly surprised how many students showed up for this game. I think that if we can get out to a decent start to the season we will have some good crowds this year.
