USA Today's Article on Bohl's Approach to Coaching

"It was during those first weeks here, on the heels of three Football Championship Subdivision championships in a row at North Dakota State, that Bohl began reaching out to several former Wyoming coaches with a series of questions: Why did some guys misfire here? What’s the right culture? What kind of recruit did you attract?"

Just trying to picture in my head how this conversation went with Christensen ...

Interesting article and it's good stuff to build on, if the players execute that's another thing, time will tell, but it's good to say the least

Been reading this forum for years as just a visitor, but this article got me fired up and felt it deserved a response, so I signed up.

Bohl might be the single greatest hire we've had for Football and the University in 30+ years. He gets what is needed to succeed at a place like Wyoming. His comment about knocking the sh*t outta people is exactly the type of football that I think every Wyoming fan wants and needs. How awesome would it be to watch Iowa and Oregon fold in the 4th quarter this year? September can't get here soon enough!

Craig Bohl is an excellent fit for a "cultural program" like Wyoming. I personally think Coach Bohl is one of the best, if not THE best, head coaches in the nation considering the challenges he's accepted throughout his career and the obstacles he's overcome. He oversaw NDSU's transition from DII and holds their school record for most wins as a head coach, not to mention the back-to-back national championships. The thing that impresses me the most was his ability to take an FCS team into P5 territory and beat them on their own turf. That rarely happens amongst G5 programs nonetheless FCS, and was a culmination of all the right decisions being made for a growing program.

I hope Bohl can become the same thing for Wyoming over a sustained period of time, but I won't have my hopes up. K State just hired NDSU's old athletic director, Bill Snyder may very well be done with coaching after this year, and their culture fits the type of place I think Coach Bohl could succeed at. I guess only time will tell what's in store for Wyoming and Coach Bohl.

PS - It would be absolutely amazing if we could get to witness a conference championship win, and a prestigious bowl game. If that's the last thing we get from the Bohl era before he jumps ship I will be disappointed though.

I don't think we need to worry about Kansas. If I remember correctly, Bohl has a daughter in Lincoln Nebraska. That is really the only place I think he would jump too.

More than anything, if Bohl continues, it will be very hard to retain his assistants.

It'll be interesting to see how Vigen plays out. He seems like the obvious successor to Bohl, but will he stick around long enough for that to happen assuming Bohl continues his success.

If Vigen can stop calling trick plays at horrible times (when we have momentum building without them), he very well could be the successor.

Yeah that's kind of the "go-to" idea because of his roots and history in Lincoln. No one knows when that job will open up though. The one at K State will be up for grabs very soon, and who's to say they don't put some serious consideration into hiring Bohl if we have another successful season? A lot of the football business is about connections and we know he has one there in their AD.

If where his daughter lives is a consideration he is as close at K State as Laramie.

I am sure he is enjoying his time in Wyoming, but there is no chance that he stays if he gets offered a power conference job that meets his coaching profile (recruiting, time to develop, blue collar temperament, & $$$). I think Vigen is heir apparent especially with the associate head coach title being added this year. I wonder if k states plan is to make Dimel the head coach though?

Most of the speculation is that Sean Snyder, Bill's son, will take over the HC position some time this fall. A ton of people in and outside the organization don't want that to happen. They view it as an abuse of power. Gene Taylor is also under the assumption that he will have a say in the hiring process, and it doesn't seem like he's completely bought into the idea that Sean will be the successor.

It's a long shot but if Wyoming makes an NY6 bid like many have suggested is the goal of this staff, you can't help but wonder if Bohl would be a serious contender for the opening position. It's all speculation at this point but I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm not sure Bohl would leave for K-State if offered say next year or whenever Synder retires. I think he wants to accomplish big things in Laramie like he did in Fargo. He's gotten us to the MWC championship game and had one successful season as head coach at Wyoming. In my opinion and from everything I've read that's not enough for him to consider leaving, he hasn't done everything he set out to do when he accepted the job. We are still a work in progress and are building the program. I think he'd be more likely to leave if we were having Boise type success year after year and there wasn't much left to prove in Laramie. Now if Nebraska comes calling, I think we can all agree that he'd be gone. Everyone has that dream job that they couldn't say "no" to.

Was going to say that one Snyder leaves, Manhattan KS is going to be one hell of a shit show with regards to who takes over. Whoever takes the job is going to be hated by half of the fanbase whether it ends up being Snyder's son or some outsider. I think HCCB is a pretty smart cookie that wouldn't fall into that trap. Now, if for some reason Riley flops at Nebraska...that would be an entirely different story....

After listening to Bohl interviews and reading articles I'm not so sure he would leave. He wants to coach a very specific program. Bohl could be our Chris Petersen.

He may not want to leave and I'm good with that.

If he became even remotely as successful as Petersen, I'd be beside myself. I would love to get to a place as a fanbase where we're disappointed because we didn't go undefeated rather than being disappointed because we didn't have a winning record.

After years of Petersen-to-Oregon rumors, he ended up leaving for Washington, his supposed dream school's worst enemy. So many sources and "friends" claimed to know of Petersen's love of UO, but it all turned out to be crap. Point being: If Bohl ever does leave down the line, I bet it's to somewhere we're not even giving a second thought to. That seems to be the one these things go.

Good post. And your numbers (30 years) are about spot on. Paul Roach, 1987. 2 back-to-back undefeated conference seasons and championships, 3 bowl games in 4 years (when a bowl game meant a helluva lot more), etc.
