UNI is a paper tiger and we will defeat them.

Just look at their resume - their three top-50 wins are:

@ Stephen F. Austin 79-77
Iowa 56-44
Wichita State 70-54

UNI - 3-2 vs. RPI top 50.
Wyoming - 5-3 vs. RPI top 50.

Only one of UNI's wins was on the road. The other two were at home, and they were against teams that are good-but-not-great. I similarly think Wichita State's record is inflated. Both teams racked up big win totals against suspect competition. Don't get me wrong, UNI and WSU are good teams that took care of business against the teams on their schedule, but seriously who have they beaten? The only blemish on Wyoming's record that can't be explained by an outbreak of mono is the egg we laid in Logan, but UNI laid one themselves at Evansville. I won't sit here and say that Wyoming's hit list is filled with lots of quality wins but our win on a neutral court vs. SDSU is every bit as good as UNI's best win, at home against Iowa. And the Valley is a good league, comparable to the Mountain West most seasons, but it was seriously top heavy this year. Only WSU and UNI were ever remotely in contention for an at large bid this season, with the middle and bottom tiers of the league being populated by pretty weak teams. The top four teams in the MWC were all in the running for at large bids for much of the season, and the middle tier of the MWC I would say was stronger than the middle of the MVC pack.

Bottom line is that if we played UNI's schedule without the mono late season, we'd have 28-30 wins too. In fact, if we didn't have the mono outbreak we'd likely be sitting at at least 28 wins against our own schedule. The teams are incredibly similar statistically and stylistically. This is going to be a very even matchup and when we are healthy we have so much experience grinding out wins late in games where every possession is enormous. I really like our chances in this game and it won't shock me at all when we beat them.

I agree that we can beat them but saying they are a paper tiger I disagree with.

I agree the MVC overall this year wasn't great and really N. Iowa and Wichita was basically all they had. Evansville and Illinois St. were decent. The rest of the league was really bad.

N. Iowa and Wyoming play very similar. Northern Iowa played a better OOC schedule. The win over Iowa and then the loss in OT at VCU were both impressive. Stephen F. Austin is a very good team also.

Wyoming had the tougher conference schedule. That is when we were hit with mono though. Think it will be a good game. Neither team will be intimidated.

Remember N. Iowa's 2010 team? They went to the sweet sixteen as a 9 seed beating UNLV in the first game and upsetting the 1 seed Kansas.

This won't be any cakewalk I know that.

I couldn't disagree more with the original post.

I actually believe that UNI is underrrated as a 5 seed. They may not score a lot of points, but their offense is extremely efficient. This is a team that has both discipline and lots of talent. I watched several of their games throughout the season and came away very impressed each time. It will take a near perfect game to come away with a win in this game.

For what it's worth, should UNI get past the Cowboys, I plan on putting a large chunk of change on them to "upset" Louisville in the second round.

Really tough game for sure. We'll need to shoot the ball well. I expect our bigs to do their thing but we won't win if we shoot cold.

Both teams will keep it slow paced, so there shouldn't be a lot points on the scoreboard.

Really, coming in at 12 seed, there isn't going to be a day off, regardless. All things considered, I think on our best day, we have a shot in this game, which is exactly what the tourney is about.

That's what's making it hard for me to take Wyoming in my bracket pools.

My heart is telling me to go Pokes, but my head is saying that a wrong pick could severely wreck my bracket.

Definitely worried about their 3 point shooting. 3 guys over 40%, they're gonns stretch us, and our perimeter can be iffy at times.

Sounds a lot like Boise or USU with a better big man. Going to be tough, but a game the Pokes can win. Need to bring it like they did in the MWC tournament.

I find it kind of funny on their board they are getting kinda pissy that our board implied they're a poor mans SDSU. Haha. At best. Looking at their stats, their resume, and their highlights I like the matchup. They're not going to be better than SDSU or BSU on defense, they aren't going to blow our minds with 3s, and we are certainly not going to be intimidated by their record. Put any of the top 4 or 5 teams in the MWC in that schedule and they'd all have 30 if not more wins. Our conference schedules prepared us better for this game. I am not guaranteeing a win but think we match up well.

I am the one that said that about them being a poor mans SDSU on Defense not on offense. I am not sure what their board said as I have not read it but if they would read what I wrote and not take it out of context they would understand it is a compliment.

Defensive wise man for man individually and team defense the only teams in the country as good as San Diego St. are Kentucky and Virginia. That is it. When San Diego St. wants to clamp down they are as good as anyone in the country.

I say N. Iowa is a poor mans San Diego St. on defense because they are a notch below that which still puts them in good company. Not sure why you would get pissed about that?

If San Diego St. had any shooters or a go to guy this year they would be a legti final four contender and a top 5 to 7 team nationally. Their problem is they can't score. SDSU held Utah to 49 points and Arizona to 59. If SDSU could score this year they would have won both of those games by quite a bit.

N. Iowa on the other hand can score and is very efficient and does have shooters and a go to guy in Tuttle. So not sure why they would be getting so upset over that . They should be taking it as a compliment but I guess if they want to get upset then they can.

They are very good, as is about every team in the NCAA tournament. We weren't gonna get a gimme. But let me say this...

Back when we were playing the strength of teams that UNI has been playing for the majority of the season, we had a handful of players shooting over 40% from 3, including Hankerson who was over 50% and was one of the top 3-point shooters in the nation for a while. Not to say they can't stroke it, but we were a much better shooting team (than we appear to be now) against the likes of DU, CU, Southern, etc. as well. We were #1 in the country in FG percentage through the non-conference season.

We're more battle tested than UNI. The more I think about it, the more I like the matchup. I was originally hoping for an uptempo team that we could frustrate as opposed to a mirror image of ourselves. I'm kinda excited about seeing how this game will unfold now. They're #10 in the country right now, but it feels a lot like when we played Gonzaga in 2002. We were a mirror image of their style that year, and I thought that we were an equal or better version of them. I knew, without a doubt, that we would win that game or come damn close. I feel the same about this one right now.

It seems they know nothing of Josh Adams, who has frustrated more than 1 great guard, on both offense and defense.

And it seems they think we haven't seen any other bigs that can match up, on paper, with Nance. Or teams that can shoot the 3 well.

And if they want to play slow, fine by us. But we'll also pop out for a quick play as well, should the opportunity present itself.

Well duh... We seem to think we are the better team. They seem to think they are.
Hope we have a big crowd Friday!

:D

Love Wyo Nation, both the message board and fan base. One minute, everything is going to hell and Wyoming might as well drop to FCS and play in the Big Sky, but the moment a sport has success on a national level, confidence goes through the roof.

I don't know, maybe UNI is overrated. I'll stay cautiously optimistic and say we need great games from Adams/Nance to win.
