Fall Camp Watch

What interests you most in fall camp?

One of my big ones is the RB/OLine combo. With new(ish) tackles and RBs, the run game has a lot of questions. Hoping there's good development and news there.

I think either Nico Hamilton or Samuel Harris emerge at the RB spot.

Had the chance to see both of them play in high school. They are both extremely talented. Harris probably has the higher ceiling but was a bit undersized coming out of high school. Hopefully he was able to put on some lean mass over the summer.

We still have Sam Scott, who is pretty solid

That’s true and he should see the field a lot this year.

Sawvel’s decision to not use Scott more last year was a terrible call beat out only by his weird blind allegiance to Svboda.
"...weird blind allegiance to Svoboda AND the old bald-head coach..." he has 'em both by the cobblers

Will sending Mike Grant packing finally elevate the WR room?
I'm really curious to see what the WRs under Bouknight look like. It's been a gap for so long, that even a slight improvement will be a breath of fresh air. Durr and Sargent had a lot of flashes last year, would love to see them take the next step forward.
These are really good ones. Can the passing game improve and will Bouknight begin moving up from a position coach? Lots to cheer for in that group.

Passing - excellent question.

IMO the QB position was the #1 problem in 2024 and passing has been a challenge area for Bohl for the majority of his tenure. I knew he was grooming svoboda and Peasley just happened to be a good QB option to allow the learning year. When Caden Becker found out he had no chance to beat out Svoboda it just showed how developmental Bohl was willing to be at the QB position. I’m not sure Bohl recruited Anderson with the intention he would be anything more than a backup with a bad knee.

The program desperately needs Anderson to stay healthy. Don’t know what happens if he can’t play with the new QB’s.

Did anyone catch the presser?

PBJ (paraphrasing) "we didn't have strong corner play in 2023 either but had a couple good safeties who could help mask that".

I thought that was interesting. Statistically, 2023 pass d was ranked a little higher with opposing teams throwing 58% completion in 2023 vs 62 in 2024 and yards 213/game in 2023 vs 219 in 2024. I thought the biggest was number of interceptions dropped from 11 to 6. Reading between the lines, he thought poorer safety play contributed quite a bit.

He thought we were getting back to stronger corners that wouldn't rely so much on safety play.

I'm not sure on that. To me, one of the biggest declines on D was 1st half scoring by opponent. In 23, WYO ranked around 27 in the nation allowing about 11 points in 1st half. That dropped to 121st national ranking and about 19 points per game in 1st half for 2024. I get the personnel thing but I think this stat also points to game preparation problems.
