Underwhelmed....

This was my initial assessment of this recruiting class........

Took a quick glance at the recruiting class and read some of the bio's. My initial thought was seeing a class that needed a LOT of development, and looking at who was also recruiting them told me others agree with that assessment. There were 19 signees, and earlier it was mentioned that the class would be anywhere from 19 to 21 most likely. It looks at this point that a couple of kids maybe changed their minds. From the season UW had I think it was lucky that we kept this many from going elsewhere, but in looking at who was also recruiting these kids then it was easy to understand why many of them chose UW.

The Hasselbeck kid was interesting, but when you see a 6' 190 LB you go that kid might have athleticism and he might have speed, but he isn't going to see the field until he spends a lot of time in the weight room.

I looked at the OL that Sawvel was touting in the presser the other day, and I was scratching my head about this class. He spoke about how he had several above 6'-6" or there abouts. I saw only one kid and he was also recruited by Air Force. A thin young man at this point but will be one of those guys that will need to spend a great deal of time in the weight room. Not one of this class do I see making an impact like some of the kids from the last class at places like the RB position.

If there is any help in this class for next season I didn't see it. I am thinking that the only help for next season will come from the Transfer Portal, and that won't be until January.

What I don't understand is spending 21 of your roster spots on high school players, when the team is in bad need of portal improvement across the board and with a total limit of 105 roster spots period.

I bet there are going to be enough players moving on that it won't matter if they signed 19 HS kids. Right now many of the higher programs are NOT signing HS kids like they used to, that is how we got Durr and others. Many schools on our level have become the feeder schools for higher programs. Kids come to a school like Wyoming with the idea that they will develop and use our weight training program and cafeteria and get some good education and then move on to bigger and better schools that will pay more in a couple of years. That is the reality of college football right now. I look at some of these young men and unfortunately what goes through my mind is will they stay one or two years? Almost like the old JC programs. There are a few that might and will stay, but it isn't like it used to be.

Pretty much how it is these days.

My daughter goes to high school with one of the players in this class. When I found out he had committed to Wyoming, I congratulated him and we chatted a bit. He said he was originally offered a scholarship at Texas Tech but they pulled the offer and told him they would “come get him” if he proved himself at another school first.

If Texas Tech was after him at all within the past year, then he must be a pretty good player. Their permian basin oil billionaires are throwing obscene money to NIL and they are landing pretty much any player they want now.

He’s a little undersized but an excellent athlete. Played QB, RB, and WR for a 6a Texas high school.

He told me Wyoming was planning to use him at WR. I asked him what he thought about being a WR in Wyoming’s offense. His response almost made me laugh out loud. He said the UW coaches had told him they had a ‘NFL level QB’ ready to see the field next year. I assume this must be in reference to Drube.

I did not ask directly, but I got the feeling that he got some level of NIL deal to come to Wyoming because he had an offer from North Texas, but said there was ‘more in it for him’ to go to UW instead.

Kinda surprised we didn't sign this kid from East in Cheyenne, has a good motor and a bit of nasty in him.

Also, remember the excitement today use to bring surrounding the program and future... It seems to have have fallen off a cliff the past few years. Although, its been gradually dwindling for the past 15 or so it seems.
