Last season Oregon State lost to D2 Western Oregon in their exhibition.
Time to panic right?
The Beavers ended up 17-10, and had a win over #6 Arizona.

Beavs ended up 15-2 at home, and at one point were 16-7 on the season before the wheels fell off and finished 1-7.

The D2 exhibition doesn't matter, it doesn't count.
It's all about the coaches seeing what they have and messing with lineups and seeing how the players play with eachother.

With that said, I am a little taken back by the Pokes defense giving up points, and the offense not producing.

Sky is not falling, but the team is not going to be great. I still think this team has a great chance to make some noise this year.

Are you still hereby preaching and expecting NCAA or NIT at worst? I'm sure I could bust out the all original "I told you so", but I too, take this game lightly. This game was more for practice than play. Hence Adams not playing in the end. I think these guys will be competative but I see us coming up short. A lot...
I hold to my 14 to 17 wins. And even though you scoffed at me when I first said that, I find it funny that your example is a team that got... 17 wins.
Anyway. I hope you don't lose interest all together if the season doesn't reach your expectations.

Am I still expecting NCAA? Yes. That's what I expect out of a Larry Shyatt coached team. That should be the team goal and expectation.

Go cry somewhere else.

There was nothing tearful in my post. I just wanted to make sure you were alright still.

Expecting this year's team to go back to the Tournament is wishful thinking. Anything could happen of course, but this team is not an NCAA Tournament team in my opinion. Yes Shyatt is a good coach, yes he'll have them prepared most games, but they're exceptionally young, and 'expecting' another berth is setting yourself up for a big letdown. If they get a CBI I'll think that's a great accomplishment and a learning experience for this coming together squad.

I actually agree with Beaver. Every single year the expectation should be tournament or bust. We will never get anywhere if we shoot for the CBI at best. The goal is NCAA and nothing else should be the goal. Now, once the season shakes out and the chips fall where they are, NIT or CBI may be perfectly fine. But we should never be settling for the CBI before the first game.

Listen to Josh Adams talk after the game last night. You think he's already packed it in for the CBI? Hell no. That kid was pissed because he has high aspirations for this season. He is competitive to a fault and will not settle for anything less than winning.

Its not wishful thinking to expect success. It's funny, Wyonation members get bombed on for expecting the football team to fail then get bombed on for thinking the basketball team should succeed.

On the contrary, my feelings about both teams as currently constructed are identical. Young teams, high ceilings, but realistically not ready for prime time. Do I want to and hope for another Tournament berth? Absolutely. I just think that reality and objectivity tells me something else.

Go Pokes.

Go Pokes.

I think this sums it up nicely. Last year was Shyatt's 5th year team. It was full of seniors. He coached them well. He got them to a mountain west tourney championship. We'll fall off a bit this year. He has the exposure he needs to recruit even better talent than he was just 3 years ago. He has the opportunities to not fill his classes with freshman. He can balance out the roster. We will win some big games and championships - we won't do it every year. Everyone will hate us though.

I don't think this year will be our best by any means - we are coming off a big high from last year. But hell, I didn't believe Shyatt could take last years team to the tourney and win it either.

He develops players - he does a good job with it (we are champions because of it). Basketball is nice compared to football - you get to play alot more games - and get alot more opportunities to fix mistakes, correct behaviors, and develop talent.

Lets hope I'm wrong and we win the regular season and tourney this year! ( I don't think it is likely though).

I hope getting beat by fort turd state was a huge wakeup call. They beat us in every aspect of the game. The only thing that gives me comfort about the season is having Shyatt as our HC.

They beat the end of our bench by 4....The first 6 didn't play the entire second half...

Adams, Herndon, and McManamen were taken out for good with 14 to play in the 2nd half. The first half was somewhat troubling with the crazy amount of open looks we gave up, but I'm not too concerned heading into friday. I don't think anyone can say we suck after this game, but we can't say we'll be fine either. Not sure what's to blame for our own shooting woes... maybe the 30 second shot clock? lol

Well maybe this game is what we needed. A wake up call. Sounds like our squad is really gonna have to buckle down on the defensive end. That's the most disappointing thing to hear is that we got blistered on that side of the court. We're gonna take some lumps this year for sure, but the most critical thing is to get our D back to respectability by MWC play. I mean D and to a lesser extent boards come from effort. That's something you can always give. Shy and company can straighten out positioning/mental errors but these kids are gonna have to bring the hunger. I'm still really excited to follow what's gonna happen this year, but my season expectations have dropped drastically lower. We've already been beat in the dome of doom...................

I thought Dalton looked pretty smooth on the offensive end, he's just such a toothpick! A year or 2 in the program is gonna do him wonders physically, but til then he's gonna get shoved around. I chuckled pretty hard when him and Lieberman got kinda tangled up in the first half with a couple ft lewis players, and Lieberman essentially pivoted right into Dalton and Dalton just got taken for a ride. Lieberman is 7 inches shorter than Dalton but only 10 lbs lighter, amazing how skinny some of these kids are coming out of high school haha, I guess I forget how skinny I was back in the day.

Edit* I forgot Dalton even had a year of community college as well, sheesh they must not feed kids anymore.

Dalton's thickness has nothing to do with his closeouts and that was by far the biggest problem I was seeing with him. Everyone noticed the fouls on the threes, but when he wasn't fouling three point shots, he was getting blown by.

Chop your feet Hayden! C'mon, man!

He's a leader and he's not going to accept when he sees that his teammates aren't playing hard.

IDK... He looked more than just upset at players. You could tell he was clamming up and didn't even want to be there. That looked like he just got into a fight with someone kind of pissed.

I'll just move aside now and let the basketball junkies have their say...was that Ft Knox, or Ft. Lewis?

Shyatt happens!

And Bohl and the mighty football team showed great promise against the sheep today!! :willybs: At least they'll be competing for the coveted Charmin Toilet Paper Bowl in 4 years right?

I dunno what the big deal is with the exhibition game today. Sure I'm surprised they lost, but it's a completely meaningless game that Shyatt and co. treated like a scrimmage. I don't think hardly anyone is expecting a repeat of last year, or anything even close. This is a young, young team, thats gonna go through growing pains this year. I'm excited to see what these guys can do, and really really excited to watch Adams put up 40+ potentially a couple times this year while being the senior leader for this young group. I will be absolutely astonished however if the basketball team stoops anywhere near the historic lows that the football team craps out week in and week out, but anyone who wants to come in and beat their chest every time the basketball team loses, bring it on! :D
I'm with you on most everything you said, but Shyatt's teams rarely score 40, much less an individual player.

Not to mention, Nance scored 38 against Denver with an "experienced" team around him, and yet we still lost. Hopefully that is not the case this year, but I wouldn't be surprised to see games similar to that.

I think Josh Adams will average 25-30 points per game this year. The problem, as we all know, is who will step up consistently around him?

McManamen really needs to get his shot figured out. 1-7 on field goals and 0-6 on 3 pointers, many of which were wide-ass open, is obviously not going to get it done for us.

I was really impressed with Trey Washington's game. He's quick, and really filled up the box score. A lot of hustle and churn. The other team has to account for him on every possession because he is going to get those steals. Hopefully he is and stays healthy. Right now, I think he takes Lieberman's spot in the starting lineup. He has way more upside and is just going to make more plays, especially defensively. I think he can create his own shot as well.

Our swing men, Marshall and Gorski, both have potential, but who is it going to be on a game-in, game-out basis? Both looked lost on defense at times, and I think both showed some flashes of adequacy. I'm hoping that Justin James is the real deal.

The Bigs, Herndon/Barnes/Dalton/Naughton/Moemeka, have a ways to go. Hopefully they will be a little more refined and active by the time conference season rolls around.

Going to be tough going 8-10 deep judging by what I saw last night.

I agree with this COMPLETELY. I was very disappointed in what I saw from Herndon, especially defensively. Barnes looked better than last year but still not sure if he's going to be a viable option THIS season. Dalton has a ton of potential but needs to bulk up and quit fricking fouling perimeter shots. Naughton was a pleasant surprise. I think he could be a nice player this season. Moemeka didn't show me anything but he didn't play a lot. Our season is going to hinge on two things, Defense from the 4/5 position (to include rebounding), and consistently getting points from anyone not name Josh. Were not going to need anyone to set scoring records, just going to need guys to average 6-12 every night and we will win some games. Shy will get the team playing D. Guys like Trey and Marshall will clamp down on the perimeter and guys like Dalton and Mac will scrap it out against players bigger and better than them. I think we will play good D again this season.

I agree with everything your wrote, with the exception of Adams averaging 25 - 30 ppg. I am thinking more around the 18 - 20 ppg mark, which is still solid...but every team we face is going to tee-off on him.
