We have a log jam at PG? With Trey gone, next year we have a Junior PG that everyone seems to think is terrible and will have a freshman. That's pretty thin. Especially since they usually like to have 2 ball handlers on the court together and I don't know anyone else on the team I would trust to handle the ball next year.
I don't consider Dalton and Herndon the same type of player. Maybe they are but I think their game is different. I think they both have great futures with the cowboys. Herndon is on the verge of having adequate size. ANother off season and he should be fine size-wise. I think he can be pushing 220 by next year. No doubt Dalton needs to gain weight but there is no reason to think that he won't. I think his outside game is better than Herndon's as he shot 45%-ish from 3 in JUCO and has started to shoot better lately. He could be a sharpshooter by next year. Herndon is ok outside but he needs to attack the rim more. Bottom line I wouldn't want to be rid of either one of them.
I am not sure where they are gonna go with the scholarship. Another tall athletic wing is always a good thing. But another guard that can handle the ball wouldn't be bad either, if he could be tall and athletic that would be great.[/quote]
1. Yes we had a log jam at PG. We had four players that can only play the same position, two of them the same class . So we had 4 out of 13 schoolies tied up at one position with two of those the same class. Now we have the 3 with a year in-between, much better. We will get another, not this year but next.
2. That was my point about too many players that can only play one position, we need more wings that can handle the ball and be in the 6' 4' to 6'7' range.
3. Herdon and Dalton ARE the exact same player... too thin to bang inside and too slow to be effective on the perimeter one on one. Sure they can shoot an open jump shot, but neither can get to the rim or penetrate for a mid-range jumper on their own. Dalton is a little more aggressive, but that doesn't help his weight nor his athleticism. i.e. see SDSU.
4. To tell me you would not trade either one for Cameron Oliver (6'9" 225) just shows me how little you know about other players in this league. Oliver is just a freshman and is dominating every team and player he plays against. Herndon has been on the team for three years and this is Daltons second year post high school, Oliver makes these two look like Junior High players. Oliver is averaging 12 points/gm - 9 rebounds/gm and 2.5 blocks/gm as a freshman. Herndon is 7 - 4 and .8, Dalton is 4 - 3 and .5. I guess you decide.....
5. We don't need another point guard right now....unless he is 6'5" and can play both wing and point.
This team would be heads and tails above where they are if they could finally get some size to our PG and SG/SF. I played lower level college basketball and we had 6'4" -6'6" SG's, I don't think its much to ask a D1 school to have taller SG's/PG's. I truly believe our biggest problem is our PG's are too short to be effective wings, and our 6'9" players are too thin to be of any help down low. But whatever, everyone has their opinions....its what makes the world great.
