Tom Burman is such a joke

They couldn’t get a few to come back and play instruments. You’re right. That’s wayyyyyyyyy too much to ask from anyone
Pep band is a volunteer gig. It's not a class like marching band is. The kids do it on their own time. When I was in the band we came back for the sheep game that happened during winter break, but there were 3 other games that we weren't called back for.

The bar is set pretty high for who can be in the pep band. There aren't many seats, so there are tryouts to find the best musicians to put together the best band. Not all of those musicians are local, which makes it pretty damn hard to get them all back to Laramie during break.

Really? I thought the pep band members received scholarship dollars in exchange for playing at games. They don’t get anything?

That said - I am not criticizing the band for not being here while on break. I can’t blame them if they can spend time with their family or make some extra money.

Maybe, the AD could provide a little $$ for a few band members who live close to Laramie to go to the game. The point is Burman is one lazy dude who does the bare minimum and cannot think outside the box to improve anything or solve any problem

Western Thunder was in the Rose Bowl Parade. Very good exposure for Wyoming.

In other news, i saw there was a hard hitting interview with Burman and Ryan Thorburn. I have a sense is it very similar to Vladamir Putin giving an interview.

The band was at the rose bowl for one or two of the home games, but not this last one.

Does anyone think Burman would have let there be no band for a football game? It’s like a 7 person band for bball btw. Should not be that monumental of a task to get a gosh damn band during winter break

I listened to it. Of course, Burman has complete faith in Sawvel to turn it around. The schedule was much harder than it first appeared. And expectations were just too high for a first year coaching staff and first year qb. I guess we fans demand way too much and need to be patient in hopes of 6-6 and 7-5 seasons in the future.

I'll give it a listen when I have a chance, but did Burman have any explanation for why his expectations of Sawvel changed? When Sawvel was hired, Burman was pretty clear that the expectations were to "take the next step" that Bohl was never able to make happen.

I guess Burman never clarified whether that step was forwards or backwards, so I suppose Sawvel was successful in taking a step backwards.

I can't speak to Burman's style, but Lee Moon was the AD when I was in the band. He couldn't give two shits about the band. I got the feeling he was annoyed that he had to figure out how to transport us to the NCAA tournament in 2002.

This is definitely a different environment, though, and I don't think that it's out of the realm of possibility for NIL money to go towards band members to get them to be at games when school is on break.

Pep band is closer to 30-40 members, but I get your point. As far as not having the band at football games, that's a non-starter. Marching band is a credited class. The syllabus is provided when you sign up, and you have to agree to be to school 2 weeks early and be ready to march over for every game 2 hours prior to kickoff. This includes bowl games and championship games. If you miss a game you fail the class.

WOW That's strict but I understand why. Outta curiosity, what if you're sick and you can't be there?

As with any other class there are exceptions that would allow for opportunities to make up the time and get the credit, but because of the nature of the sets in marching band it's a pretty narrow window.

I should say so. Thanks for the info.

There are not 30-40 band members at a basketball game. There’s less than ten
From the university of Wyoming department of music website:

Basketball Pep Band

Volunteer pep bands perform at Men's and Women's home basketball games. An audition is held during the fall to select two 20-member full time bands (Brown and Gold Band); however, more performers are welcome to play at the games. The full time members are paid $20 per game. The basketball pep bands are open to any UW student.

Each year a 29-member pep band is selected to perform at the Mountain West Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. If a UW team is selected for the NCAA tournament, the pep band would travel with the team to support the Cowboys and/or Cowgirls. The tournament bands are determined by attendance points at regular season basketball games.
