Today's (Wednesday) Practice

Highlights per Gag's:

- Christensen was irate with the #1 defense during the goal-line session in 11 on 11. Sounds like the offense scored easily on a couple of short runs and Christensen let them hear it.

- Tashaun Gipson had two interceptions during practice. At least one of them was against ACS. Sounds like T. Gipson is having a monster fall camp. Great to hear. On the other hand, is it just me or does it seem like the QB's (including ACS) are throwing a lot more interceptions in camp this year? I know the coachers were planning on opening up the offense a bit more and trying more passes down field, so that may have some to do with it. Hopefully ACS, and the other QB's get it together soon. Scrimmages will provide a lot more information on whether interceptions are once again a problem for the offense.

- As mentioned in another post, both Herron and Aiken are seeing time with the #1 and #2 offenses. Sounds like they are trying to refine the route running of Aiken because the athleticism is definitely there. I've heard that Herron has been working on both kickoff and punt returns. I like the idea of seeing that speedster return kickoffs, but I'm always a little skeptical to see a true freshman return punts. You often have to make split second decisions when fielding punts and true freshman can struggle with that. Then again, Hoost Marsh didn't do too bad as a freshman punt returner so who knows.

- "Kongo" had a leg injury today. Doesn't sound too serious as he stayed on the field to work out in non-football related activities. Probably a bigger problem is that Stover sat out of practice and will see a specialist down in Denver soon. Injuries could end his career. Too bad it's at a position where we are the thinnest (DT).

Hate to be a debbie downer, but if the big guys on our line go down like that, we're completely screwed. Any team that has a semi-decent o-line (including CSU) will absolutely dominate us with their running game. It doesn't matter if our speedy guys can get into the backfield if they're forced to chase runningbacks down from behind after our DTs have been pancaked.

Even if Stover is out, I think we will be OK barring anymore injuries. Purcell is a good DT who has the size to not get manhandled in the trenches. Mertens is a little bit undersized, but I think he can be a serviceable DT. We really need Taufa'asau to step up his game and become a dominant DT. Beyond those three guys, we really don't have much. Sumter will more than likely be forced into the rotation, mostly in running situations.

We do have some guys that are good DT's, but we are severely lacking depth. Its imperative that those top 4 guys stay healthy and get themselves into good enough shape to be playing 4 quarters because we can't afford to have them come out for a rest. It will be interesting to see how these guys hold up in the scrimmage.

Almost makes me wish I had tried out even though I've never played.

5'11 275lbs. with backgrounds in wrestling, judo, and jiu-jitsu with few people ever actually being able to force me down. Only way they've done that is by attacking the knees and breaking my center of balance.

Only thing is, been working on my knees over the summer.

To balance out my debbie downer post. Hearing that Tashaun is playing at a new level and that we're doing man to man coverage now instead of letting opposing QBs have the easy 10 yard completion every time has me excited. This could be awesome!
