Time to clean house

Howdy, folks. New member here. I’ve been lurking off and on for quite awhile. I finally decided to join as a member.

I attended the Idaho and BYU games. I came away shocked that a UW football team could be so unprepared and uninspired.

I may not know what coaches or ADs could be better but those currently in place are not getting the job done. They have got to be replaced. I advocate for replacing Burman first and let the new AD hire the next head coach.
Solid first post - and reasonable. More posts needed!

Blaming Covid ha ha.

Go back and look at years of Wyoming football recruiting and it is obvious attrition happens all the time and has been exacerbated by the transfer portal.

Sawville, like his predecessor, is very reluctant to play the portal game which is the new norm. Unless you rid this staff of the mindset of being afraid of the portal starting with the director of recruiting, the inability to get better players will continue and any better HS players recruited who show promise will transfer as they already have.

The Bohl developmental system will not produce the results at Wyoming any longer at the same level with the portal. I just don’t think this staff is capable of thinking outside of the Bohl box and if target players don’t get signed they are ill prepared to go to option 2.

The recruiting mindset doesn’t come across as “what we can do” but instead it’s more like “what we can’t do”.

Now that the failure wall is built the word is out - if you know you are a quality skill player Wyoming is not the place to be if you want to enjoy the results of your hard work. I guarantee you skilled prospects who are basing their decisions on expected play time are seeing the reluctance of this staff to best use the skill players and it will immediately be a turnoff.

The second all those better players last year put in for the portal should have put a focus on getting the best players from the portal instead of loading up on players this staff will be reluctant to let play until they have been in the system for 2-3 years.

I feel Wicks used the portal to assemble a hoops team that will provide some exciting play based on the design of how he will run the team. Just don’t notice it the same way with football where there were and have been obvious needs left unaddressed. If it isn’t possible to change immediately using the portal, UNM would be winless right now instead of playing to be bowl eligible in their final game.

We can debate this all we want, but unless Sawville has an awakening and becomes the next Kirby Smart overnight the likelihood is we will endure a Koenning 2.0 for 2 to 3 more years.

Players aren’t naive and any player who knows their abilities may very well be contemplating entering the portal rather than taking a chance on the next year with this staff. Maybe I’m wrong and the existing roster is clamoring to stay attached to this staff. It’s simply a watch what happens for me.

Just throwing this out there: I know he wasn’t highly popular at Wyoming but Brent Vigen has MSU at 12-0. I think his overall record as head coach is 44-9.

I did not know that. Thank you filling me in.
There's a few schools of thought on this board. I personally think junior's promotion was a major criteria for the hiring process. Some think it might of been a consideration but relatively insignificant. Some think it was totally irrelevant and was not a factor at all.

I hope the new legislature forces an investigation.

I didn’t like the feeling in a similar situation involving the Shyatt son.

Regardless of how Burman states the Bohl and Shyatt hires worked out, this is a fact: The sons were retained and given promotions under assistants promoted to head coach.

I have no knowledge to question if there were any back office deals made or not, but I do know everything is subject to negotiation. It’s how the business works.

Even if everything is completely legit, it just has the look and feel something influenced the decision making process. When the L’s pile up, it makes ponying up for hires like this less palatable.

What's sad is the our AD, who is making $550,000 a year, had so little clue about the actual coaching capabilities of either Edwards or Sawvell that he just took the word of the previous head coach (Shyatt and Bohl) in making the decision. And both of the people he hired were working in the same facilities he was.

Burman + PBJ + Junior is the same as about 15-20 assistant/associate professors. Maybe nothing, but questions need to be asked on behalf of taxpayers.

Well, we are two days away from finding out if anyone at UW has the balls to do what is right and oust Sawvel and/or Burman.

I haven’t watched this team play since the Idaho game. I have checked the score line and sometimes watched highlights. I won’t even do that if Sawvel is still the coach next year.

Based on Burman's history with coaches, there is zero chance he does anything. In fact, there is very little chance he does anything next year either. Sad.

I understand what you are saying, but Sawvel is on a different level of bad. He has not done one single thing on an even average level since taking over the program.

I am encouraged by the fact Burman has basically been silent about Sawvel’s future. I think if he planned to keep him, he would have released some sort of statement of support by now. If for no other reason than to see how the statement goes over with the fan base and donors.

I think there is a good chance that Sawvel is gone come Monday. The sad thing is that we are even having a debate about it. It should be a foregone conclusion.

He hasn’t made a statement because the idea of firing a coach after his rookie season hasn’t even crossed his mind. Perhaps some assistants are gently nudged to go elsewhere but nothing big will happen. If it does, it’ll be more surprising than Wyoming coaches making QB changes when it’s obvious.

I was just listening to the Roaring repeater podcast. Cody Tucker does nothing but make excuses for Jay Sawvel. Injuries, Bohl leaving the cupboard bare due to NIL, and just plain old bad luck. Plus, the players love him!
With great attendance this year and a Wyoming press crew that has their lips firmly planted on Sawvel's behind, there is absolutely no pressure on the school to get rid of coach dumbfk. Nothing will be done until attendance plummets.
