Thoughts on Independence Bowl

Will be a MWC-ACC matchup next year. It is a well supported bowl.

I love it! It'll be nice to not have to play the WAC in a bowl game for once. While it might be harder to get to then some of our other games, it's a more intriguing location as a fan. I've been to ABQ, Fort Worth and Vegas enough, at least this is a new destination.

It might seem like a long trip for a bowl game, but it's doable. I made the trip to the Liberty Bowl to see CSU when I was in college. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my college career.

Read about it on the MWC board. Though, placing the MWC #3 against ACC #7, I'm not quite sure about that matchup.

No disrespet fromolwyoming, but yoiu're starting to sound like that whiney poster Yoda from Fresno. I say we (UW/MWC) play whoever they match us up with and kick their ass.

I kind of feel he has a point, though. IF our #3 loses to the ACC #7, it makes MWC look VERY bad, while a win proves absolutely nothing. a #3 vs a #4 or #3 vs a #5 is a wash... but #7?

The ACC's bowl teams this year are:

FedEx Orange Bowl, #9 Georgia Tech (11-2) vs. #10 Iowa (10-2)
Chick-fil-A Bowl, #12 Virginia Tech (9-3) vs. Tennessee (7-5)
Konica Minolta Gator Bowl, Florida State (6-6) vs. #18 West Virginia (9-3)
Champs Sports Bowl, #14 Miami (9-3) vs. #24 Wisconsin (9-3)
Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, Clemson (8-5) vs. Kentucky (7-5)
Meineke Car Care Bowl, North Carolina (8-4) vs. #17 Pittsburgh (9-3)
Emerald Bowl, Boston College (8-4) vs. Southern California (8-4)

Since FSU was their 7th place team, and only barely bowl eligible, it's possible we'll be playing non-ACC at-large opponents some years of this deal.

This year we would have put up AFA vs. FSU, since TCU went BCS'ing. That's a pretty good matchup. Also, i think AFA can opt in to the Armed Forces Bowl if they want, which could have put the WYOMING COWBOYS into the Independence Bowl vs Florida State. And we'd have won, too.

I think my conclusion is this is a good matchup for the conference any year we put a team in a BCS bowl.

New Orleans would probably be a pretty easy flight to do too.. then a quick drive to Shreveport
It's 350 miles from New Orleans to Shreveport.
If you didn't want to fly to Shreveport you'd be better flying to Dallas and then driving. It's 190 miles from Dallas.

Here is a piece I did on Shreveport back in October. Seems like a fun place to go for a weekend.

I really don't care what team the acc (another creampuff conference) sends. I dislike almost all acc teams, and fans of those schools. We (the mwc) should roll over whatever team the acc sends.

This is what I meant. #3 beats the ACC #7, didn't prove anything much unless our #3 was unranked and their's was in the top 25-30 somehow. And if the ACC #7 beats the MWC #3, then that will only go to discredit us. If it was more like #3 vs #4 or around those lines, I wouldn't have nearly as much chargrin with it. But the way ot os panning out, it is basically kicking sand in our faces saying that the top of the conference is only as good as the lower tier of the ACC.

And the entire country will continue to think that until we prove otherwise. You don't get respect by beating up on the WAC every year. After the conference dominates this game for a few years we will have earned a better opponent.

This year it would've been Florida State vs Utah - a scary matchup depending on which version of either team showed up. The FSU that clobbered and humiliated BYU in Provo would have been bad to face, the Utah that couldn't move the ball on Wyoming would've been bad to rely on as well.
I don't think we would have seen any kind of domination in this matchup.

I grew up just across the state line in Texas and my folks still live near there, so I get down that way at least once a year. While they have rebuilt part of Shreveport/Bossier such as the Boardwalk (which is really nothing more than an outlet mall), a lot of that town is a rundown shit hole.

But it could be a welcome reprieve in the middle of a cold Wyoming winter. However, Shreveport was in the 30s during the game this year. BRRRRR  I have some aggy friends who complained to me about that after their game. I just told them we were 25 below here in Montana at the time. Shut 'em up.

There was a weatherman (can't remember his name) from the KCWY13 TV station in Casper that transferred to Shreveport just a couple of weeks before Katrina hit. He said the weather was too boring in Wyoming. I'm not sure if he went to a TV station there or to a National Weather Service office.

Let me know if you remember his name. I work the the National Weather Service up here so I'd be curious to know if he went to our office down there.
